I really wouldn't recommend blowing into the camera body because your breath will be full of condensation. If you are going to do it yourself, definitely get one of those pump/blower things, hold the camera upside down, aim the nozzle into the camera body but don't start poking it around in there, and squeeze the squeegy bit. If you are lucky the movement of air around the body will dislodge the particle without you having to muck around with mirrors or do anything more intrusive.

I think I've fixed it!

I tried to look for the mirror lock up mode in the setup menu - it isn't there. I read however that setting the camera to "A" does the same thing when you hold down the shoot button. I think the movement has managed to dislodge whatever was there:

Before:

After

Is this possible?

Looks like you have a bit more here though:

Sorry, but I believe you're coming across at slightly arrogant. I've never owned an SLR before, and the camera (to me) was expensive, and I don't want to risk scratching the lens or something similar.

No, he's right. This is such a simple procedure, it may not even be worth the effort of making an exchange.

It wasn't arrogant. It was true. Glad you got this sorted out on your own. ;)
