I got my black one today and it's definitely not a quality product, or not what I was hoping for, it bows in on the sides and deforms depending how you hold it and has play like you mentioned, and doesn't work with the dock either, pretty unhappy, returning it.

How hard are you holding it? Mine does not deform at all.

Another thing I don't like about the bumper is that my headphones plug doesn't fit into the audio jack while the bumper is on. I have to take the bumper off whenever I want to listen to music. Very annoying.

After looking at it some more, I think a major reason for the play is the inexplicable rubber section that surrounds the audio jack hole. I don't know why they made that part all rubber and stopped the hard plastic center section here.

That little bit of rubber allows the whole case to flex. Apple should have let the harder plastic center section run continuously around the perimeter. I suppose that rubber bit acts as a flex section similar to the flex section on automobile exhausts, but I'm fairly confident the bumper would still go on and off without it.

Poor job by Apple..

I got my bumper last night. This is exactly the conclusion I came to as well.

I generally like the design but the looseness around the top - due to the rubber section around the headphone jack - is annoying. Even worse is that the button on the top seems to be spontaneously triggered when applying any pressure to the top of the bumper.

Why not use a light adhesive if you're concerned about the looseness?

I bet some double stick tape would do the trick. I don't expect to be taking mine off regularly - like some others need to do for various docks/reasons -so this would work for me. Prob not an option for others.

Im getting tired of these kind of posts by people. Questioning every decision Apple made.
I looked through James92se posts and nearly all of them are complaints about something. Give it a rest, the phone has problems like EVERY OTHER PHONE.
Apple couldn't have made the bumpers to fit every dock and headset thats out there. They support their own products and that is all that is needed. You weren't forced to buy the iPhone 4 or the accessories Apple made for it so go find something else if its that bad!

Here, this will make it easier:

You'll notice the majority of my posts aren't complaints

I'm actually VERY happy with my iPhone 4. I have no reception issues whatsoever, I have blazing fast 3G speeds, I have no yellow spots, I have no loose buttons, etc.

I believe the bumpers are loose and overpriced, but so what? That doesn't mean I'm complaining about my phone.

And I'm beginning getting tired of some people never allowing anyone to complain about anything Apple does...

I bought the black bumper and I like it. It fits well, but I also have a front and back zagg protector. I was afraid that it would lift the sides up, but it doesn't. The top section is a little squishy when I press on it though. And isn't the rubber part where the headphone port is located necessary to allow the case to stretch and fit around the phone when putting it on? I'm afraid of it eventually getting loose though.

They probably put the rubber there because of the headphone going in and out of the jack. It would get all scratched if it were the shiny plastic.
