Is a dual 1.25 G4 faster than a 1.6 G5? IMO, yes.

Both use PC2700 memory, but the G5 only has 512k of L2 Cache, while the Dual 1.25 has 2MB L2 Cache per CPU.

I used a 1.6 G5 and wasn't impressed with it. The only bonuses it has is that it has an SATA HD, and can take up to 4 gigs of RAM while the Dual 1.25 MDD is maxed at 2GB.

The 1.6 G5 I was using had a Geekbench score of 985 while the Dual 1.25 MDD with 2GB of RAM does an 1100.

Imagine, I have a dual 1.42GHz. You can basically swap in a dual 1.42GHz daughter card in there.

Many of the 1.25 MDD actually use 1.42 chips that are downclocked. He may be able to get 1.42 free other than a bit of solder and without technically overclocking.

Any way to tell if it's the underclocked 1.42s? I wouldn't mind giving mine an extra speed bump.

Yeah, I almost mentioned that when I suggested some fresh thermal compound. Take a close look at those chips when you get around to doing it. There are a lot of 1.42s disguised as 1.25s.

Ah darn... Mine says -

XC7455A- RX1250PE

So it looks like a no go. Oh well.

Yup, best to leave that one alone. The A's are not very good candidates for overclocking even a little bit.

Is this the computer you're typing from? 19 minutes to shut down, remove heatsink, clean cpu, read cpu, apply fresh thermal compound, install heatsink, start computer, launch browser, and post comment. Not too bad. :)

Sticker on my daughter card says 7455B and 1.25

It's not the sticker that's of interest. It's what's printed on the actual chips. You cannot check that now unless you already have some thermal compound to reapply after removing the heatsink (or you're willing to keep it shut down until you get some).

Pretty quick, eh?

Nah, I'm joking. I was using my laptop (Latitude D630) when I posted that. I'm on the MDD now, though. I'm real meticulous about cleaning and reapplying the thermal compound. I love my laptop for the speed, but I can't resist my MDD.

After more tweaking... got 1 more point lol! Should be better when I get a faster drive.

Disabling unneededed things like Spotlight and Dashbord etc.

Disabling dashboard would free up a very small amount of RAM but it only really uses the CPU at all when you use it. Spotlight only slows things when it's scanning. I honestly wouldn't expect more than a 1-2 point difference if any. Looks like you got 1. :)

The HD upgrade will be a much more real world performance thing. A lot of the HD benchmarks tend to only test that. Xbench is your best bet to get an idea of the performance a new drive ads system wide. The real benchmark though will be seeing with your own eyes that your system boots and launches apps faster.

Word. You won't need benchmarks to appreciate the difference that a HD upgrade will make.

Thanks guys. If a deal i got in the marketplace goes through, ill have a radeon 9600 Pro and a 300GB and 500GB 7200RPM PATA drive. All for an amazing price :D

I moved all my PPC macs to the garage :( I was gonna replace the G4s with a G5, but I got a dud.

Having fun with the G4? I don't have enough space on my room that is why i gave my G4 away to my daughter. I miss it now.

I bought a Ultra Kaze fan for both of my MDDs and a cheap PCI bracket fan speed controller to plug them into.

13$ Shipped for both parts per MDD.

Help the noise by a large margin on the earlier MDD.

My FW800 one is not as loud stock but I still want to swap. I would like to replace the fans on the PSUs but those little guys are expensive for their size and speed.

I am not even sure if I am keeping the FW400 one. Was going to use it as a server but might just use a QS 733 for it.
