LOL Sorry I picture the guy running off and you just standing there wondering whats going on? Did you even run after him? I would have beat the !@#$ out of him. I still to this day don't understand why people meet strangers off the internet. If he wasn't going to paypal you and ship then don't do the deal. If you had to meet bring friends or like said above meet in public place.

no i'm not going to chase him. maybe he has a knife or gun. not worth it since i have insurance.

I'm glad you didn't run after him. No phone is worth your life.

Ebay final value fee: 9%, Paypal fee: 3%, shipping with insurance: $20, scammers, it can get lost in the mail...there are lots of reasons NOT to sell on eBay. I'd rather sell in person and save myself the fees and hassle.

That said, I always try meet people from CL in my bank's lobby. Safe, public, and lots of security cameras. I've had dozens of CL transactions and all of them went smoothly. Well, except for a few of those "causal encounters" :D

I've sold a lot of things on eBay and never had an issue. Fees are added to the sale price.

i got a replacement iphone from apple, and i had it unlocked but never activated. i was trying to sell it on craigslist. because i am way too trusting and believing in the goodness of people, i tried to meet up with a person to sell it. he said he wanted to take a look at the screen to see if it was new and just grabbed it from my hand and ran off. i felt like an idiot, but now i was wondering if there's anythign i can do to get the phone blocked. i called att, and they said they can't block it because it was never activated on the network. they then transferred me to apple, who said they couldn't do much either. am i SOL in getting it blocked?

feel real dumb, though financially it might work out better since i have insurance and will get a check cut out to me for the full $700 then i guess.

Which type of insurance covers theft? I could use that.

Yikes. Sorry to hear that, OP.

Luckily I've only had the heebie jeebies once in my entire 7 or 8 years selling on Craigslist. I was selling an iMac G3 that I found in the dumpster. I had totally not realized that the address the dude gave me to meet him was in the parking lot adjacent to the projects. While I was spooked, the dude was legit. It could have gone much, much worse.

The bank idea is brilliant! Meet during bank hours and that way, you can deposit the cash immediately and save yourself from walking around with a thick wad of cash.

I typically sell on Kijiji and have them meet at my home but I'm rethinking that with big ticket items going forward. Mind you, although we're not immune to this kinda garbage in Canada, it's somewhat less likely.

Why do people use craigslist. If you want to sell something, use eBay and mail it!

Craigslist gives you the option of final, cash sales. eBay allows buyers to return the item trashed or claim it was never received at all and take both the seller's money and item. I would never buy or sell an iPhone on eBay.

That's a LOT more rare than someone robbing you on craigslist. I have sold MANY things. And the worst that I ever got was a return.

Really? Robbing someone during a Craigslist transaction is much more common than a false SNAD (significantly not as described, in eBay lingo) claim for a desirable electronic item? I don't know what you're selling on eBay, but it's obviously not new iPhones.

I usually meet inside my bank. The last time was in the bank parking lot where I sat inside the car, I let the guy hold the phone, but my brother got out the car and stood behind the guy. lol the guy said he felt nervous.

One year old iPhones, mainly. All my buyers are happy, because I sell what I dl say I'm selling. Sure if you scam someone expect to get caught. I keep all the original packaging, list with all original photos. And only sell to people with enough feedback. Being paranoid doesn't always benefit you in business.

looking over my property policy, it looks like i should be covered. it said it would only not cover theft if it were an unlocked car.

Fantastic - really sorry to hear about your ordeal, but it looks like you should get most of your money back, and you've done a great deal of good warning all of us about the problem as well.

Sorry to hear about that. :(
Definitely report the theif's phone number to the police.

This is why I am meeting in a Verizon or ATT store when I sell my iPhone 5 thru craigslist. I never thought about the police station! that is after at idea though. I have sold a fair amount of items on craigslist and never had any issues. Always meet in a public place.

You absolutely did the right thing, but if it had been me, I still would have chased him.

It's just the principle of it. I can't stand that people think that they can just take what they want from people who worked hard to earn it. My mother recently had her purse stolen from her. She was so upset... I wish I had been there to chase down the guy who did it, although I'm probably the one who would have ended up behind bars for what I would have done if I got my hands on him.

I can see an early death for you if you keep wanting to chasing criminals.

I think people that say this have never been a victim of robbery.

I make people meet me at the police station, no one is ever going to try something stupid there !

Good choice (but I did have a guy pull a sawed-off shotgun on me in the lobby of my dept). A bank is also an excellent suggestion.

Would be nice if what you are saying is true. As a big-time eBay seller, you undoubtedly know that eBay doesn't let you restrict selling by feedback beyond -1 and that smart scammers have established feedback and PayPal accounts that defeat any of the seller precautions.

Also, just because you are honest doesn't mean buyers are.

That's kind of the point.

You might be right, but just because someone is willing to snatch and run with a phone because they know that you'll probably be too afraid to do anything about it doesn't mean that they are a gun-wielding murderer.

You are right that I have never been a victim personally, but as I mentioned, someone I love recently was, and it's that feeling of being a helpless victim that bothers me more than the material loss.
