A friend mentioned this problem to me this morning...I when i tried to locate the icon would just spin and not find me...tried with 3g off/wireless off etc. All i did was power off my iPhone and power it back on...everything worked good as new after that and found my location right away.

I suggest just powering off and back on and hopefully you will be fixed too

Used to get a lock inside on 2nd floor, near windows, but now taking much longer to get a lock, in car or in house. Also, when a lock is possible, hitting the GPS locate me button takes much longer. I'm resorting to putting as many wifi MAC addresses into Skyhook as I can :D

Another quick note. When I got off the plane in Puerto Rico last night it took it about five min. to find me so give it some time it your still having problems.

Works Now

Hey All,

After posting yesterday, I stepped outside and my 3G picked up my location. It seems odd that inside my building w/ full 3G bars, it couldn't find me, but on EDGE inside the building it did. Once I stepped outside, both found me.

Does anybody know why this would happen? It can't be that the building is blocking the signal since I get all my bars for both and EDGE finds me no problem.

I was having problems with mine in London and have found that it will only work if Wifi is turned on. I'd been turning it off when I left the house so it didn't ask me if I wanted to join a network. With it back on, the location thing seems to work pretty well.

I must be lucky because my GPS has actually been faster...

But who knows, it is 3AM in the morning.

mine is not working again!! It seems to be very temperamental. I am also in London so it could just be a geographical location problem...however i am connected to a wifi network and it still does not work

Yeah, that's most likely because the GPS software would keep in its memory a vague idea of the last time you used it. Dedicated GPS units like TomToms and Garmins use this to give a location faster, so if you've moved quite a considerable distance since last you used it, then it's bound to take a wee while to get its bearings, almost as if you had turned it on for the first time.

For everyone else who's having problems, try pressing 'locate me' when you're outside. GPS units have a hard time getting a signal indoors so you're not doing it any favours trying to get a location inside.

Hope this helps! :)

GPS works outdoors but when indoors and in 3G mode, it doesn't. Just searches and BURNS battery.

I guess its ok for now, but want a fix.

Other than that, for me, it is actually perfect, especially after the 2.0.1 update.

Just that little quirk.

Mine stopped working too. Even outside with a clear view, I will not get the blue dot. The circle will only show a approx. a 3 mile radius. Trying to restore right now and see if that will help.

Same

I have the same problem since updating to 2.0.1. I tried restoring, but now it spends about 15 minutes getting the location, which naturally murders the battery.

I too am having this problem.

I guess it's something to do with the baseband update?

Has anyone found anything to fix this yet? I've tried restoring the phone and network setting but nothing is working!

my experience with the GPS so far is it seems to work much faster when i have good 3G reception in Edge only areas it doesn't pinpoint to the street very quickly, while at a 3G area, it takes less than 5s for it to find my exact location

The GPS works fine for me when outside because it get a view of the satellite. It's indoors that I have problems. When I'm on 3G indoors it will not find my location using the cell towers and wifi. If I turn off 3G and go to EDGE it works fine indoors. I never had this problem on 2.0 just since 2.0.1.

I met with a "genius" yesterday and he could not give me a clear answer. He said it works and sometimes indoors you can have problems without a clear view of the sky. He did a restore in the store and tried to blame it on my .ipsw file on my computer. It worked about 3 times of the 15 times I tried it in the store. I went over to the 2.0 display phones and they all worked within seconds. That didn't prove anything to him either. I tried to explain to him how it is suppose to work using the cell towers and wifi but he kept going back to his previous explanation.

I hope Apple recognizes this. We will just have to wait for an update.

Took about three minutes to zero in with the blue dot, indoors, near windows, full 3G. Then, after zeroing in and having a massive halo, it zoomed me out again and put up the cross-hairs...

I just talked to Apple support. They have not heard of this issue, but think the phone needs to be swapped. If you have the same problem, they said to call them at 1-800-694-7466 and use case number 103-636-499 . They should be able to help you get a new phone.

I have attempted to use the Location service on both a 16GB and 8GB iPhone 3G with the 2.0.1 software and both do not work. It was working fine on the 8GB model before the 2.0.1 update so I think it must be software related?

Okay, so a bunch of you are reporting that GPS stops working after installing 2.0.1 . Who is going to be the first person to report back on this thread after going to their local Apple store, looking to see if the demo phones have 2.0.1 and if the GPS still works, and talking to the Apple employees about your newly discovered problem???

Not working on 2.0.1 here either, located in London.

Actually, that's a lie. I got GPS working fine with 3G and WiFi disabled, but as soon as I turn 3G on it just spins forever. Tried to turn Location Services on and off, but nothing.

Really quite annoyed at how buggy this thing is now - GPS not working, keyboard still lagging...

solution

I have the solution... ssh into the phone, replace the "CoreLocation.framework" folder in your pwned 2.0.1 with the one from 2.0, use bossprefs to fix permissions ... works like a charm.... back to the excellent accuracy from 2.0
N.B. I am in the states... on a 2g phone YMMV do this at your own risk

EDIT: seems to work only temporarily... I reverted back to the original files.
rebuilt permissions...

Works for me this morning after 2.01 update - though at present I am in a non-3G area, so no 3G signal to potentially interfere.
