alk

I actually use the alk copilot app, which has just had a new release. There ARE some routing issues in new areas - they don't update their maps database as fast as navtec, but it works fine for the usa.

they offer a free trial version for the USA only of their previous product, but the new one is really Much much better. This is a local database product so it doesn't need constant data connections to work as planned.

Cant fault Navigon I've used it since first day it launched on iPhone and think its great. Someone else said though:
Dont buy full price it comes up for sale so often just bide your time.

some of the nice features:
Clear maps and POI's
TTS is good
reality view is very handy
Lane assist is good
Traffic add on can be a little confusing to start with but once you set it up to your prefs it actually works quite well

There are add ons for it some are good some not so (traffic: good 3D maps pretty pointless other than making it look a bit cooler). They were bought out by Garmin so not so sure how that will pan out. You cant get other voices for it (yet?)

My wife has a tomtom in her car and I find the navigon maps and POIs much clearer to read when driving.

In my experience its useful to have th emaps on board as I often drive in dodgy data areas. But I can see why folks would not want to load all the maps to a phone.

a.) Google Navigation works for walking and public transportation too...not just driving.
The built in maps app gives walking and public transportation directions as well. I have been using the built in map app for years to help with directions. I think it works fine for my use while driving. I could see the other apps being useful if you depend on it more. I tried the MapQuest app a while back and it kept taking me the most out of the way routes to get places.
