With a fan discount on unlimited data w/AT&T, there is no option at all that is cheaper than what I currently pay, period.
So, until they force it, i'll keep unlimited.

Hi all,
First time posting. I've greatly enjoyed perusing the threads on this forum so far. Some very passionate participants with strongly held opinions!
To my question (and I know this has been brought up in other threads, but I haven't seen a thread specific to this one concern):
Why do people hold onto their unlimited data plans so vehemently?
If your monthly usage is 6GB+ I can see the advantage, but look at the disadvantages:
- No tethering unless jailbroken
- No taking advantage of iOS 6 Facetime over cellular (at least with AT&T)
- No taking advantage of the shared data plans (I know they are not attractive to most, but for families with 3+ smartphones/devices they have merit I think)
I've seen some posts where people are even prepared to pay for a no contract iPhone in order to keep their unlimited data - that's denying yourself a $20 a month subsidy on the phone right there.
Or is it just a case of wanting to hold the wireless carriers to their word, even if they don't want to support unlimited data plans any more?
I switched from unlimited to the AT&T 5GB plan with hotspot, and now my family is on the AT&T Share Plan with 6GB between 3 smartphones. We have 3 wi-fi only iPads in the family and being able to use any phone as a hotspot is very convenient. I have not missed the unlimited data once, nor have I exceeded my data allowance once.
What is your situation?
Yesterday I phoned Verizon to see if I could use an upgrade on a non-contract phone number and get the new iPhone on my main number, which wouldn't be eligible until next May.
The answer was "yes", but the rep said the non-contract line would go onto a 2-year contract - not that my main line would go into a new 2-year contract, as has happened in the past. Also, this Verizon rep said I would NOT lose my unlimited data plan with a new iPhone on 4G unless I chose to!!! She also said there was no way they could force me to change plans!
I grilled her on all this over and over, and she stayed with these comments. Certainly NOT what's been published nearly everywhere.![]()
But will you actually USE it to it's extent, or are you one of those unlimited owners who only use 1-2gb cause there's a bunch of those people who just want unlimited for the title.

The shared plans are a rip off. If I go to it my bill will go from $200 a month to $250 a month, how is that an advantage? The day AT&T forces me to leave my unlimited plan, I will go to Smart Talk.
No Facetime? I'll used Skype and all smartphones can have that, so I'm not limited.

Well depends on what you use.. Do you really need unlimited or is 4 gigs enough?
I see where it benefits those who have more phones on a plan. For me leaving Sprint 4 smart phones all unlimited on a poor network I am actually going over at the same price to ATT or have gone over.
We only went 3.5 gigs once as a family So I went to 10 gig plan and works out just fine. Plus we dont pay a tehter option so it's a savings there as well if you use it.

From what I used to pay for ATT a yr ago to what I am paying today is a 5 dollar difference, only option that is different is I can now tehter without the extr cost or jail breaking.
AT&T will allow grandfathered users with the $30 smartphone plan upgrade and retain the plan when upgrading to the iPhone 5. My dad has had the old smartphone plan since the iPhone 3G and just upgraded to a Galaxy S III LTE on AT&T. He was able to keep the plan. I believe the plan switched to Data Unlimited for LTE Smartphones or something like that.
Not quite sure why people are assuming they'll get rid of it when the next iPhone hits?
I can use 1 gig a month on my unlimited plan, the issue is it's cheaper for me to stay on the unlimited plan. I have 2 iPhones and 3 dumb phones, I will stay what is cheaper.
See that works for you, if you had all phones smart phones the situation would be different.
I've read that Verizon is forcing people to change plans, not AT&T.
Actually no it wouldn't. Use the 6 GB plan, $90+($35x5 smart phones)=$265 now if I had old unlimited data plans thats $30(unlimited data)x5(smart phones)+$60(700 mins with rollover) + $30 for unlimited text=$260.
Yes it's only $5 I am saving but I have unlimited data, I don't have to sit here and tell someone they are hogging more data than others are. I have never used more than 400 mins with 5 phones due to free mobile to mobile. rather have unlimited data and unlimited minutes.
Right now my wife is grandfathered but only uses around 1GB and kids (2GB plans) don't go over 2gb except occasionally when Pandora runs all night and they forget to put it on WiFi![]()
We have lots of WiFi use, but as you can see small amounts of non-WiFi.
Getting an iPhone 5 for myself - moving from Blackberry - so I am just wondering what data amount to get for myself or to reprice the shared plans although my wife wants to keep unlimited on her new 5 as well (in July 2013).
My real question is this:
I see references to LTE meaning you will use more data. Can someone explain why that would be the case?
But you don't tether so in your case you save 5 bucks, if you needed it it would cost you a little more, but ideally your other 3 would not be unlimited as you cannot add unlimited on anything that isn't currently unlimited so technically you would pay about 10 over if you added data to the other 3 phones..
2 unlimited and 3 on tiered data. Again every situation is different for everyone.
But I can jailbreak it and tether if I wanted. I know the other 3 wouldn't be unlimited if I added them now, but I was saying how it would cost me more money and I am getting less in the long run. ooooooo I get unlimited minutes.. big deal..![]()
I know.. I got tired of JBing... finally realized it was a form of stealing, and don't want my kids to follow in my foot steps haha. Need to be a better example ...True story![]()
But it's not a form of stealing at all??? Unless you live in some kind of alternate reality universe?

Unless you're using it to pirate apps that you should otherwise pay for. But correct, JBing alone is not stealing and is legal and protected by the DMCA.
