My card was pretty new, but I took it out and checked it - no dust at all.

I re-installed Tiger, and the issues went away. Just to test, I then did another erase and install of Leopard and the issues came back, so I think it must be to do with Leopard.

I have gone back to Tiger for the moment, until a fix is found.

Don't know if people are still following this. My problem resurfaced (lines appearing on screen).

I downloaded SMCFanControl

and up'd my PCI fan to minimum 1000RPM (from 500RPM default). It seems to have done the trick. no more artifacts.

I'm having a similar issue (mainly with the thin lines appearing) that you all have described. Haven't had a chance to crack the Mac Pro open to look for dust, but I'm downloaded the fan controller and hope that helps. Time will tell.
