It worked for me, restored from a backup of 4.0 on my iPhone 4.

Btw, that is just force quitting the app, not respringing

Worked for me! I lost it on my 3GS when updated to 4.0
Didn't have it on my iPhone 4 for 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2.
Updated to 4.1GM and its back! Thanks OP!

Ok thats cool....but I don't want it showing the db all the time. How do I get it back to normal?

By the way. Checked out some of the numbers that I'm getting on the field test app. For the numbers I have seen for 3 and 4 bars, looks pretty consistent with what Anandtech found in terms of the bars and signal strength. So no fiddling with the numbers in the update.

I did it and it worked...but now I can't get rid of it. I even restarted the phone. Anyone have suggestions. And just tapping it isn't useful because sometimes it flashes and it gets annoying.

You just hit the home button and it will exit the program or reset all network setting and that works too.

Fixed. Just go Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings.

Damn, will never try any trick without a known solution again.

You tapped the bar/number area? It'll alternate for me.

Yep. I can switch between them no problem, but it doesn't just stay on the signal bars.

For example, on the home screen I can have the signal bars showing. If I launch an app it goes back to the db reading. If I close the app it then goes back to the signal bars for a bit.

Now, on the home screen I can have the signal bars showing when in the app, if I change to signal bars it will stay on the signal bars, if I close the app it will flash to the db reading and then back to the signal bars.

It will eventually revert back to db regardless of what I do and there is no way of keeping it on the signal bars.

As others seem to have luck with restores, guess that's what I'm going to do

I can confirm this works! Awesome tip :)

...I'm jailbroken on iOS 4.0.1 at the moment, but I grabbed the FieldTest App from the 3GS' 4.1 Application folder and ssh'd it over to my iPhone 4. The field test app doesn't display anything, but it does change the signal bars to DB numbers and lets this trick work!

Pretty cool, worked for me on 4.1.

What are the DB signals in relation to the bars? All I know is that the lower the number the better. (or technically the higher the number)

Worked on my 3GS with 4.1. Thanks for this.

Is there a site or page that lets us know of the best and worst signals?

I am going to assume this is AT&T only, anyone know of a rogers based version of this feild test app?

Well I have found a way to easily switch your signal bars on your status bar from regular bars to db's and back whenever you want. Well I'm on the latest beta of 4.1 (8b5097d) on iphone 4 and it does have feild test (maby it's just because I restored from my 3GS but idk). So go to your phone app and then to the keypad. Then type *3001#12345#*and press call, this will put u in field test app. At the top I can tap the bars and it will switch to db's and if tapped again it will go back. So once u tap to change to db's hold the sleep button till slide to power pops up then let go of the sleep button and hold the home button (this is a respiring). Once u do that u can just easily tap the bars or db's and switch where ever you are in your phone. Good luck hope it works on all your phones. And ps you don't need to be jailbroken!

Nice find Dr.K..lol...This is cooliio
