Frank Zappa- The whole album Shut up 'N Play Yer Guitar
Van Halen- Eruption
Phish- You Enjoy Myself

More people should appreciate FZ. He did so much for music. I just think he would be appauled at what people call music these days. (pop, rap in 2007,8&9).

I really like Ghosts I-IV from NIN.

Keeps me awake when I want to write papers. Sometimes, I put "Treefingers" by Radiohead on repeat. I just love the ambient noise there!

Funeral for a Friend--Elton John
Telegraph Road (the first 7 minutes are instrumental)--Dire Straits
Travels--Pat Metheny
I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry--Dexter Gordon
Stardust--John Coltrane
City Country City--War
Ataraxia, Part 1--Passport
and, of course, Great Gig in the Sky--Pink Floyd

Hibernation(live)-Ted Nugent

Seeing this made me think of another Ted instrumental I heard years ago on an "import" (bootleg) CD. It was called Scottish Ted, and I haven't heard it in years. I did a search for it, and found out Amazon has it on MP3. Great song! Man, sometimes I love the internet. :)

Oh yeah, one more: Joe Satriani - Always with me, Always with you
One of my favorite Satriani songs.

I just pulled out an old Tom Waits' CD, Heart Attack and Vine, and rediscovered a great instrumental:

In Shades.

Slinky cut, like if you've ever been out and about around 4AM kind of slinky. Cool!

Allman Brothers band - in memory of elizabeth reed

Pink Floyd - one of these days, any colour you like, careful with that axe eugene

Yes - mood for a day

Santana - soul sacrifice, samba pa ti

Airlane - Gary Numan
Axel F - Harold Faltermeyer
Embrujo - Triumph
Peter Gunn - The Art of Noise
Sirius - The Alan Parsons Project
The Imperial March - John Williams
Top Gun Anthem - Harold Faltermeyer & Steve Stevens
1984 - Van Halen
The James Bond Theme - Monty Norman
Alpha - Vangelis
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Main Title - Jerry Goldsmith
Enterprise Clears Moorings (Star Trek II) - James Horner
Popcorn - Gershon Kingsley
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
Misirlou - Dick Dale & His Del Tones
The Pink Panther Theme - Henry Mancini

That should be enough for a while...

The version of hibernation I used to have was from the original double live LP...I wore out many a needle on that turn table the records survived till I had to split town one day :(

a few other good ones:
Woodpeckers From Mars--Faith No More
Supertzar--Black Sabbath
The Star Spangled Banner--Jimi Hendrix
Orion--Metallica

I wish I could think of more of them when I was a teenager I had about 4 hours of nothing but heavy metal instrumentals on cassette.

I know what you mean. Oddly, I never had a turntable, but I had tons of cassettes. I had the huge carrying case for them, and my friends and I would load up and go to each other's house and listen. I know what you mean about the mixtape of instrumentals. Sadly, I also know about losing a great collection. When I was 17, I totaled my car, and left my big case full of tapes in the car for a day or two. When I went to the shop to re-claim my stereo equipment and tapes, they had all been stolen out of the car. I was incredibly ticked off, but of course, they had the "not responsible for items left in vehicles" sign. I think that sucker had 150 or so tapes in it.

Oh yeah, the Nuge song was actually called Scottish Tea. Typo there.

Some more ideas:

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover

And, from way out in left field - Trans Siberian Orchestra, Wizards in Winter. Man, I love that song. Yeah, not the usual rock band, but I really like that song.

Oh yeah, forgot one I was going to mention: Led Zeppelin - White Summer/Black Mountain Side. Jimmy Page is unbelievable on this one. Wow. And Moby Dick is cool, as well.

Everything composed by Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Sibelius :D

Agreed; and also agree with Dejo about Misirlou, Vangelis' "Alpha", great piece, and Tubular Bells, a completely original and stunning piece when it came out. Santana is fantastic and I agree with the posters who mentioned some of the incredible stuff by Pink Floyd. The Fandango by Antonio Soler is a mind-blowing piece from the early 18th century, and some of the music by the Brazilian jazz trio Azymuth is brilliant. Then there is Yann Tiersen, (Amalie, Goodbye Lenin).

Cheers and good luck

R.E.M. has a great one called "tricycle". It's a b-side and really good. It's not the best ever but I've had it in my head for about 6 months.

Kind of Blue (album) - Miles Davis [especially the song So What]

Time Out (album) - The Dave Brubeck Quartet

Flying - The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

and the instrumental version of All My Loving from the film of the same name.
