Been listening to LOST and The Fountain's OSTs lately, both have equally intense and beautiful tunes, highly recommended stuff.

Respect the Wind ~ Eddie and Alex Van Halen (it's the last track on the Twister soundtrack)

One of the best guitar songs ever.

I know what you mean. Oddly, I never had a turntable, but I had tons of cassettes. I had the huge carrying case for them, and my friends and I would load up and go to each other's house and listen. I know what you mean about the mixtape of instrumentals. Sadly, I also know about losing a great collection. When I was 17, I totaled my car, and left my big case full of tapes in the car for a day or two. When I went to the shop to re-claim my stereo equipment and tapes, they had all been stolen out of the car. I was incredibly ticked off, but of course, they had the "not responsible for items left in vehicles" sign. I think that sucker had 150 or so tapes in it.

Oh yeah, the Nuge song was actually called Scottish Tea. Typo there.

Some more ideas:

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover

And, from way out in left field - Trans Siberian Orchestra, Wizards in Winter. Man, I love that song. Yeah, not the usual rock band, but I really like that song.

Oh yeah, forgot one I was going to mention: Led Zeppelin - White Summer/Black Mountain Side. Jimmy Page is unbelievable on this one. Wow. And Moby Dick is cool, as well.

actually I remember another instrumental by ted that had a very Scottish rythm to it in some parts off of intensities in ten cities called TNT overture wait my bad i was confusing it with hybernation but tnt overtur was good too

Others I have liked are Green Onions (Booker T Washington & the MG's);
Classical Gas (Mason Williams)
Lambada (sunshine feel-good music) among many more.

Cheers and good luck

Forgot to say Thunderbird from Thelma & Louise is a fantastic instrumental guitar piece. Track #4

YYZ was a good one I am not too into Rush though I though Geddy Lees voice was too nasally for my tastes--me and my bro in law would get into heated debates about power trios often, considering I was a Motorhead fan he always bitched that Lemmy sounded too gravelly

Mike Auldridge "Indian Summer" or "Southern Rain" for some seriously good pickin' 'n' fiddlin'.

Flatt & Scruggs "Earl's Breakdown" for more good pickin' 'n' fiddlin'.

Burning Sunflower Blues Band, "Uranus"

Joe Bonamassa, "Palm Trees, Helicopters and Gasoline."

Allman Brothers, "Little Martha."

Eric Clapton, "Son & Sylvia" (from the Reptile album)

Soundtracks by Alexandre Desplat, e.g., "Driving in Geneva" and other tracks from the film "Syriana" and a bunch of tracks from "The Queen."

The six Bartók string quartets.

What JFreak said except I might pass on the Sibelius and tack in Berg Violin Concerto.

Many great instrumentals mentioned in this thread...

I would like to offer up a few...
Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of Little Wing
Death's Voice of the Soul
Van Halen's Eruption
Metallica's To Live is to Die
Randy Rhode's Dee
Testament's Musical Death (A Dirge)
Cynic's Textures
Joe Satriani's Midnight
Forbidden's Spiral Depression
Pink Floyd's Is There Anybody Out There (sans intro)
Music from Crossroads (the Ralph Machio movie, not Brittney's)

Just the one's that come to mind (as a guitarist), perhaps I will add more later...

Don't forget the Shadows; they were one of the first bands in the modern age (by which I mean 60s) to specialise in instrumental music. Some of their music still sounds superb, especially Apache, The Savage, Guitar Tango, and Wonderful Land.

Cheers

Pink Floyd - Echoes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond I-V, Pigs, Any Colour You Like, Time (holy ****ing drum intro), Us and Them (holy ****ing sax orgasm), Comfortably Numb (greatest guitar solo of all time), High Hopes (second greatest guitar solo of all time)

and pretty much everything by

Clint Mansell,
Mono,
Mogwai,
Explosions In The Sky,
God Is An Astronaut,
godspeed you! black emperor,
65daysofstatic,
and Sigur Rós
