Cash is meant as a way for the couple to pay for the wedding, the honeymoon, or as a nestegg to start their lives together (towards a house, for example).

A compromise could be a $50 stuck inside a toaster oven. Just remember to put a note on it so they don't just plug it in.![]()
You guys have to rent your own tux? I would never expect someone to put out money for my wedding.![]()
They don't have a registry. They're also young and broke.
I'm not sure what else they'd want because they are already living in a fully furnished place.
if you're in the wedding, you're close enough to discreetly ask if they would prefer cash instead of something else......so ask, discreetly.
Or ask their parents.......and anyway, it's a pretty rare couple that's "young and broke" who have everything they need
young and broke + living with at your brother's house = no need for normal household gifts like toasters/bowls/silverware etc
..still, it's ok to ask if they would prefer cash since that might really be the thing they need most

Yeah, some grooms pay for all the tuxedos. But, most can only afford one. If the guy's a good friend, you can get him back, if you haven't already. If he's not, you can decline the honor.
Figure out where they are registered at and at the least get them a gift card to there. Don't give them cash, that's lazy and unthoughtful.
