Cash is meant as a way for the couple to pay for the wedding, the honeymoon, or as a nestegg to start their lives together (towards a house, for example).

You guys have to rent your own tux? I would never expect someone to put out money for my wedding.

Yeah, some grooms pay for all the tuxedos. But, most can only afford one. If the guy's a good friend, you can get him back, if you haven't already. If he's not, you can decline the honor.

They don't have a registry. They're also young and broke.

I'm not sure what else they'd want because they are already living in a fully furnished place.

if you're in the wedding, you're close enough to discreetly ask if they would prefer cash instead of something else......so ask, discreetly.

Or ask their parents.......and anyway, it's a pretty rare couple that's "young and broke" who have everything they need

young and broke + living with at your brother's house = no need for normal household gifts like toasters/bowls/silverware etc

figures, but they wont ALWAYS be living at the brothers house and wedding gifts often are intended to help the couple when they do set up their own place.........still, it's ok to ask if they would prefer cash since that might really be the thing they need most

What's wrong with a cash gift? I think it's more thoughtful to give a young couple some startup money instead of something they'll have to return. Besides, it saves me from having to shop.

Not trying to be an ass, but if you can't afford to pay an extra $300 to rent tux for your own wedding, either don't get married or don't have any groomsmen. Just like the OP said, they are already putting out alot of money for hotels and alcohol for someones wedding and they are expected to pay more by renting ther own tux and EXPECTED to have a gift, I just don't get it.
