What doesn't look right to me is the gap around the edge. It makes the wood look like a cheap decal. I think it would look classier if the wood was edge-to-edge across the entire aluminum cover.
Since to be edge-to-edge, it would have to be formed to match the curve of the edges, I'm not sure I have a problem with that. But I'd prefer that the edges were tapered at least, to blend better into that curve; OTOH, they'd still have to have a minimum thinness, so as not to chip too easily.
Still, it would probably serve to prevent scratches and dings, if nothing else; and if it removes easily enough and doesn't cost too much compared to other alternatives of similar function, it's not horrible.
