Ok I’m taking out my gtx 680 and installing a gtx 1080. The 680 used two power cables one each from the two 6 pin ports on the motherboard. The 1080 use a single 8pin cable do I need a dual 6 pin to 8 pin cable or will a 6 pin to 8 pin cable that I use with the 680 work? I bought this last fall and have forgotten much about the install.

So do I need a dual 6 pin to a 8 pin cable or will the single 6pin to 8 pin cable work?

The GTX 1080 Founders Edition works perfectly fine in authentic MacPro5,1 with the cable linked above. There are no power concerns with this card. If you are using a GTX 1080 Ti or an overclocked variant of the GTX 1080, that MAY not be the case.

It also gets up to 75 watts from the PCIe slot - so that's 225 watts available

To answer the Q: I would go with Dual 6-pin to 8-pin.

And the maximum effect on all 4 slots should not overexceed 300W, that leaves only 75W to the other 3 slots.

300W for all 4 slots. If slot 1 draw 75W for the 1080, then still has 225W for the remaining 3 slots.

The 2 mini 6pin is NOT included in that 300W limit.
