How much longer are we expected to wait for 4K HDR on MacBooks and iMacs?
I shouldn't need to be confined to my TV if I want to watch Netflix in 4K and HDR in 2017.

Come on Apple, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision should be standard across all your devices by now.

Netflix is 720p in web browsers I believe, unless you're on Microsoft Edge, which supports 1080p. Even the official Windows 10 Netflix app limited to 1080p SDR. HDR is a mess on desktops at the moment, so I wouldn't expect Netflix to support it for a good while.

4K on my desktop with a GTX 1080 and the latest drivers when viewed on Edge.
Even Kabylake and Coffelake iGPU's support 4K on Windows when viewed through Edge.

I agree HDR still has teething issues on Windows, but it's gotten a lot better since the Fall update and with the latest Nvidia drivers (not sure about AMD but I imagine they are in a similar situation).

But with Apple's top to bottom control of hardware and software there shouldn't really be any issues incorporating 4K HDR into new laptops and desktops - would be a pretty huge selling point from my perspective. - Clearly they can do it seeing as the iPhone X includes it.

Please play these movies and let us know if they are really 4K, I have read in a home theater forum that this indicator is false, they actually play in HD.

Also, I have the same DC of Star Trek, (I do not have the 4K ATV, just the 4th gen. ATV), and it is still SD, so, please play the movie and let us know.

From the way Apple worded it, HD movies purchased through iTunes will get the free UHD upgrade. That might include HD digital copies redeemed through iTunes, but, not titles linked from Movies Anywhere. (Also, Movies Anywhere does not currently support UHD at all, if a title was purchased UHD, you can only play UHD from that source, not MA app., it will only transfer over in HD.)

That's not entirely correct. I purchased Wonder Woman on iTunes in 4k and it transferred to vudu in 4k also. However, I've found that not all of the movies do that for some reason. A few show up as only being purchased in HDX despite having bought them after the were made available in 4k on iTunes. I have however found that movies bought in HDX on vudu transfer to 4k on itunes via the movies anywhere connection. I was able to buy Baby Driver for $9.99 on vudu instead of paying $19.99 on iTunes. I've also been able to do that with some that were as inexpensive as $7.99 too.

As others have said the 4k/hdr indicators in itunes store and TV app and ATV are misleading. If you play any of these ported movies and swipe down it will show you resolution and HDR/DV status. It will likely tell you it is playing in HD. This isn't necessarily true however if you purchase a UHD copy somewhere else and port to iTunes. For example if you purchase a UHD version on Vudu it seems to port over as true 4K on itunes if available as those rights seem to carry over but if it is an HD purchase you will not get an upgrade in itunes.
I started checking mine after reading this... it seems to depend on the movie because I have some that did only port over as hd and some that ported over as uhd. Ugh. It seems all the ones i bought cheaply were all uhd that did port over. It seems silly that they're not a true upgrade from hdx considering had they been bought on iTunes they would have automatically been upgraded. I wonder if they'll allow that to happen in the future? Doubtful, I guess. :/

I'm wondering if we'll finally get Disney movies in 4K when Last Jedi comes out in March. That's too big a title for Apple not to have in 4K. Somebody's hand will be forced. I really hope that this is figured out before Thor comes out next month. It would be nice to rent that in 4K.

I’m a new Apple 4k tv owner and was very disappointed that The Black Panther was not in 4k HDR. Come on!

I found a way to get them on your Apple TV. It's $5 more, but worth it. Use the VUDU app for your movies. Sync both it and iTunes with Movies Anywhere. Bam. All your iTunes Movies will show up in VUDU and any others that you purchase from iTunes, since they have better deals. If you want 4k and it's not in iTunes, just buy it from VUDU. I just got Thor Ragnorok on VUDU and watched it through my Apple TV in 4k. You just have to go to setting in the VUDU app to select it to play 4K by default.
