I'm quite happy you resurrected this thread. It's the most fun thing i've seen this week in MR.

Keep up the good work. Let's see the 'production version' with ports!

Maybe it will run Mac OS CE :p

I don't really think that Apple would ever make a portable OS and name it that... Maybe Mac OS Xm (m is for mobile), then they can have the pMac (p is for portable!)

well.. if the name is pMac ,the os should be OSXp and is kind of weird don't u think?:p

awesome modeling job and all that. i wish i could do that as well.

but my only problem is that in an apple product the ports are more prone to all be together/on the same side (?). just a suggestion.

Yes. It could be either OSXm or OSXp. Probably OSXm because OSXp could stand for windows xp. doh! But the pMac sounds like it fits.

the pMac runnning a mobile G4 running at 733 Mhz and has a 10 gig hd running OSXm.

Haha, we can all dream; cant we?

I think they could get in trouble for using Xm since there is that stereo hardware that is XM.... I seriously doubt that they would care where the caps went. How about OS XLE (Lite Edition) or OS Xpe (portable edition)?? Either could work, and not run over something in use already.

Just a thought, or three... :D

Damn, OSXm had so much potential too. ;)

OSXpe could also be a fesible one too. Or maybe, we wouldnt even need a lite edition. How bout OSX without OS9 classic drivers? It wouldnt take up as much space as normal, desktop OSX, but would still be the full version. Give me ur input on that.

Don't bother with OS 9 drivers on it... Have it mount as another device if/when you need to sync with it. OR, incorporate an airport card into it, and have it allow you to sync in the backgroud with any computer on your airport network. You could browse to the machine from the iWalk instead of having the computer do it. It really wouldn't matter if the computer has the airport card, since you can make a LAN with the base station. :D It would also mean that you could do it from ~150' away (better then the ~30' of blueball, I mean bluetooth :D).

Make the entire case one large airport antenae, which could boost the signal even better.

So, i mean, with the syncing the backround thing, that you could really leave your computer, go to the crapper 100 feet away, and still use ur computer via the iwalk. Cool idea.

Yeah, and if the interface is done right, you might even be able to continue your UT game while on the sh*tter... :D

Ahh, nothing like a good game of UT while taking a crap. God, screw a monitor, just get me an iwalk and a T1 line!

the final thing

this is the final model of the device. I hope youll enjoy it as much as i enjoyed modeling it

i wish to thx everybody for support this 3D experiment. i want to thank specially to KingCobra for the port suggestion, Gelfin for the size discusion,Alpha for the advice on the screws and last but not the least to Eye for not Kick my ass as soon as he saw this thread!!:D

Very Cool

Awesome job on the renders.

One suggestion though...patent that bad boy before Micro$lut steals it for one of their next products.

"close-up"

by the way, this is a "close-up" of the ports

(damn.. i really need some serious big rumors..):D

Mystery port = FireWire 2... :D

The first device to be made forward compatible right out of the box. :D

BTW, I always enjoy a little screwing around...   :D

this is not supposed to be exactly a PDA, its more like Multimedia Station u can Play Movies, Listening MP3's but also can imput sound from an external microphone and mix it or movies from an FireWire camera, edit it and Burn them ( yes its circular form it is cause it is the size of the minimun Combo drive unit, so u opened like a Walkman and put a blank CD into it) also no keyboard just a Pen an Inwell on a sensitive screen. i really dont like the "iWalk" name but all my imagination went into modeling the thing

hope youll like it :D

the model was done in Form•Z and rendered in Cinema 4D and final retouches in Photoshop

Nice work on the mock up, but what I don't understand is how is this any different in what it will do compared to the 12" iBook? The iBook is a real computer that will fit in your backpack or briefcase, if Apple was to market a device like this it would be a flop because the iBook offers a lot more for not much more or less.

Being such a compact device, it would probably have longer battery life. It would also be the 'truely mobile' machine. Responding to your iBook or Powermac via airport. Besides, a tablet is better than a full laptop (weight, battery life, etc).

Maybe, if Apple did release something like this it would be the 'true' digital hub. By that I mean it could remote control your stereo, turn on your DVD player, adjust the temperature, open the blinds, etc.. Just like all that Panjea junk (which never works, and screws up) my uncle has but better. Kinda like that HP project called Cooltown? or something like that? (??town???)

Nice 3d, modeling. Maybe you should do a shot from the top of the device (from the hinge), showing the ir port in the hinge, and the screen tilted again.

And I forgot, being such a small device, I don't forsee a 1ghz G4 or G3 inside. So by the time soemthign like this ever comes out, we will see G4 iBooks or 1ghz G3 ibooks. Leaving this device around 600mhz.

Another reason why it wouldn't compete with an iBook, is it wouldn't be really usefull, outside of home. Remember this thing works via airport, so no modem, ethernet... And just how many people just by an iBook to take it to the crapper? I think the consumer who buys an iBook takes it outside of the house, or dormatory...

For the Mystery port: it could be that Digital optical output port, we see on the back of Sony stereo's, Minidisc's, Playstation 2's and Sony DVD players. (Next time you use one of them turn it on, and look at the back of the device, you should see a red laser shinning... this is what i'm talking about).

i dont think so. It would be much different, infact. How many iBooks use inkwell and a pen for input? That would be none.

I think Apple would sell many to the buisness sector or education. Using the remote desktop idea Alpha and I tinkered with earlier in the thread, office managers and employees could manage their desktops from wherever in the office they are via a carefully contructed and maintained Airport network.

And come on, home many things that are even remotely close to a PDA have optical drives, let alone a combo drive. Even the new OQO thing which sports a fancy Transmeta 1GHZ processor and is the size of a PDA with a built in screen, doesnt have any ability to use an optical drive. In my opinion, taht makes this product VASTLY superior to anything taht is on the markey today.

i want.....i want !

vitruvius can I be the first one to buy one ????

I think if Apple had this available this July it would blow a few bank accounts :D

looks fantastic to me...Apple couldn't do it much better !

hey thx for all the comments, it makes me believe that the device already exists

maybe if u send me enough money i can build a real one(*)...

... or maybe i just take the money and get a great vacations at the Bahamas :D

(*) a real cardboard one!!
