linksys replied to a support email - not a driver issue they say. so... one last thought i could come up with was a quick check of the zero configuration service to see if it is running. right click on 'my computer'>manage>services and applications in left pane>double-click services in right pane>scroll down to 'windows zero configuration'>right click and choose properties.

every xp pro box i have around here is set to startup type 'automatic' and status 'started'. this is a mix of wifi and non-wifi boxes, so looks like default. if yours is different, you might try removing the linksys, then start the service and set to automatic, ok to close and apply, reboot the machine, plug the linksys in and see if the zero config thingy pops up. good luck.

edesignuk,
I tried the procedures listed here, and they worked... for a few minutes. I was able to access the PC from the Mac, but not vice versa. Now, whenever I try to reconnect, I get a "network down" error message. I should mention that I am using ethernet cables via an Actiontec 1524 DSL modem for connectivity, if that has anything to do with this.
Any insights?
Thanks,
tom

Slow file transfer from OS X to win 2000

Hi all,

I am experiencing a problem with 3 G4 Mac's running Mac OS X 10.4.4

The problem is that when we try to copy files from any mac to the file server the transfer is agonisingly long (20 minutes for a 2mb file). I have done some testing and found the following
  • When doing a copy to and from windows XP and the Mac computers there is no problem
  • one server that is not connected to the SAN can copy files without a problem as well
So the problem only seems to be when trying to copy data to the SAN or to a server connected to the SAN via a gigabit ethernet port.

The thing that really makes this problem interesting is that this was all working, and suddenly stopped for no apparent reason. I have been going all over the internet trying to find a solution but so far nothing. I have done the following:
  • set the network card to use 100baseTX and full duplex
  • setup Dave and got authentication working fine on the server
  • made sure that the workgroup and subnet are both right

I am really struggling to find a solution so if someone has any ideas I would really appreciate the help.

Cheers

TKZ 4JNA...

After a hard battle with this wireless card, and testing a bunch of software and drivers I finally found one (in the ftp u gave me) that solved my problem... Aparently it was a problem of Software/drivers... I now have a an aplication that lets me manage the wireless connections of the card...

Thanks a lot man, u really helped me...
For real:rolleyes:

Just another thing... How do I encrypt the wireless network, so that only I can connect throw this network?
I've tried throw this aplication from the linsys, but when I try to connect to this network on the mac it doesn't ask me for the wep Key, and when I try to use the net it doesn't work...

Anyone?

The router should have a control webpage that allows you to configure and set up the encryption for the wifi signal. All the instructions should be in the manual, or on the Linksys website.

Please note that WEP is a joke, you're better off with WPA.

I can browse to it but I can't ping it

I can browse to my Win2003 Server via the finder but I cannot ping it in the terminal, by name. I can ping it by ip though. I want my macs to be able to resolve the UNC so that Entourage will be able to use the Exchange server by name but it cannot find the server on the network (all of the PC's can though). What am I missing?

Windows Server 2003 Restart Alternative

It isn't needed to restart a windows server 2003 machine after making GPO changes.
go to start, run and type the following:
gpupdate /force
it will bring up a black window, and re-apply the gpo. If it needs to be restarted, it will let you. In Case #2 above, I wasn't required to, and was FINALLY able to access my shares :)
THANK YOU for this wonderful article.
If anyone has any other questions regarding windows server 2003 operation, let me know, i'm an admin for a pretty good sized network.

glad to help. like yellow said, wep is lame, but would be better than wide open if your windows card won't support wpa. i would start with the windows box, use the linksys thingy to setup the password (i'll just assume wep for now). linksys usually tries to use hex for wep, so pick 40 bit (short) or 128 bit (long) and enter something. if it will let you use ASCII then you can use letters and numbers. HEX is 0-9 and a-f, sorry if you already knew that..

on the mac, click on the airport thingy at the top of the screen, click on 'other..' and setup the network connection using the 'security' drop down box. pick wep 40/128 hex or ascii to match what you used on the windows box. fill in the rest and hit ok. should be gravy. worked for me using a windows/d-link and a g3 ibook with an original airport card using wep 128. no idea on wpa as i don't have anything that new laying about at the moment. good luck.

Alright. After reading through this entire thread in shearching for clues to solve -36 error and not finding a solution to my particular situation, I decided to post my question.

I have an iMac with gigabit ethernet card, a PC laptop running XPHome SP1, ethernet cables, ethernet hub (can be avoided, cuz I currently have 2 computers) and a huge problem.

Once, the network worked fine, with the exception of not being able to connect to Mac from PC and not seeing PC while "Browsing" the network from Mac. I used Connect to Server command.

But now, even this doesnt work, every time I try to connect from Mac to PC, I get this -36 error  I tryed all the "fixes" from this thread, including Apple's Support page, but nothing has changed. Strangly enough, "ping" command on Mac says that "No route to host" and "Host is down", and on PC something like "answer from *ipaddress*: number of bytes 32 time<10ms; TTL=255"

However, the connection exists, because if there isnt, PC says, "cable not connected" when I unplug either side of the eth. cable.

Also when trying to create a LAN game in Starcraft (worked before), Mac can see PC's game, but "Unable to join", while PC doesnt see Mac's game at all.

Im really confused with this %^&$

static route is what popped into my head. i assume the win2003 box has a static ip. if not, set that first. found this link which looks step-by-step.

good luck.

Norton Anti-Virus

I've searched this thread and found something only similar to the issue I'm having, but their resolution doesn't solve my problem.

I have Norton Anti-Virus 2006 installed on my networked Windows XP machine and my iMac Intel 20" cannont find the shared printer. Other Windows machines can print to the shared printer so I know it's shared properly. Is there a solution that I'm missing to allow the Mac to see the printer?

Thanks.

pals,

i'm trying to have a hard drive (E:) in my pc (Windows XP) shared by my iBook (G4, OSX 10.4.6), which uses a wireless,
how can i do it?

i tried to follow the clear instruction posted by edesignuk,
however, the problems i'm facing is:
1) my pc isn't using a password setting to login
2) i would like to have the whole hard drive shared.

is it possible to do so?
if yes, how can i get there?
please advise.

also, i don't know how to get in the Windows Explorer that edesignuk
said we need to go to create/select a shared folder.

and i only have 1 printer which is linked with the pc,
how can i use it to print stuff in my iBook as well?

thanks a lot for you guys advice.

Sounds to me like you're trying to log into the windows server using the OS X login screen.

You'll need to log in as normal then go to the 'Go' menu and select Connect to Server (apple + K) then type in the PC server IP address and hit enter.. a login screen will appear, type the info in here and hit enter.. it should mount like an external drive.

Problem

Hi everyone. I'm a Mac newbie (new MacBook), and new to networking as well. I followed the instructions, and can see my Mac from my PC (running XP), but not the other way. When I go to "Go>Connect to server" and type in the address as requested, I get the following message. "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://my IP/billspc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)" Any ideas as to what I'm missing? Thanks.

the only thing you left out...

how to connect the two machines. ??

ethernet? usb? what type of cable? regular ethernet cable, or crossover cable? (he says the crossover cable is the right one)

I honestly had no clue, til my buddy talked to me... he's a network engineer. ;)

he says since I have a dsl modem/router/hub with more ethernet ports, I can plug one into that and one into the ethernet port on the pc... and my mac AND pc can share the internet connection and files.

I will be trying this out soon... let ya know how it goes ;)

Unless one of the machines is a newish mac. They all have auto sensing ethernet so straight through will work just fine. Some PCs also have this ability but not all.

Error Code -36!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have excatly the same problem as wrymanrph. I've got passwords on both computer, file and printer sharing is on (but the description of the file and printer sharing says "Allows other computers to access resources on your computer using a Microsoft Network" - that might be the problem).
I am able to get files of my Mac from the windows, but not the Windows files from the Mac.

Does anyone know a way to solve it. Looking over the threads, I can see a lot of people need help with this.
