I've already tried that, it could be that the file and printer sharing is decribed as "Allows other computers to access resources on your computer using a Microsoft Network" - but I doubt it.
But I've tried everything else.

Guests without login. Can it be done?

I have a small wired network at home with a iMac G5, G4/400 AGP and Zensonic Z500 networked DVD player. The Z500 is great for playing avi/divx files and can connect over ethernet or wireless (www.z500series.com). It suports both SMB and UPNP netowrk connections.

However, the Z500 cannot authenticate to SMB (a short coming in the design/firmware which cannot be fixed). Apparently it is not too hard to set up a guest account that doesn't require the client to login under Windows. But from what I can tell this can't be done under OSX? I have set up Windows Sharing and the Z500 can connect and see my public folder, but it can't see the contents. I presume this is because it does not have access privileges? I've tried setting up a 'guest account" with Sharepoints, but without success - again it can see the folder, but not the contents.

Can an account be set up under OSX that does not require authentication? If so, can someone please step me through how to do this?

SMb crashes after entering password

Hi,

I have followed your instructions above but my Mac iBook with OS X can not access my PC.
When I enter my password in the SMB Fiel System Authentication a new window opens but then crashes and goes back to the finder/desktop.

I CAN access my Mac from my PC running XP.

Is it anything to do with my drives on my PC formated as NTSF not FAT32?

Hi everyone. I'm a Mac newbie (new MacBook), and new to networking as well. I followed the instructions, and can see my Mac from my PC (running XP), but not the other way. When I go to "Go>Connect to server" and type in the address as requested, I get the following message. "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://my IP/billspc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)" Any ideas as to what I'm missing? Thanks.
I've started having this problem myself now, but only since a clean install of 10.4 with an immediate upgrade to 10.4.7.

I was able to network XP and OSX 10.4.6 without problem before the hard drive died in my iMac G5 (the 2nd drive that's died). I bought a new drive, fitted it and did a clean install followed by the system updates. I then set up my shares.

I can access my Macs shared folders on the PC, but not the other way around as I get an identical error to wrymanrph. If I try to connect another way by going Finder -> Network -> Workgroup -> pcname and click connect I get the SMB Authentication prompt. However, when I click 'OK' it gives an error saying "The alias 'pcname' could not be opened, because the original item could not found".

I have tried changing the workgroup and the pcname and each time the PC is shown in the Finder, but I can't connect to them.

YAY!... perhaps we could start a simple site that gives step by step instructions for a lot of these frequently asked questions. I know it would help out a lot of people, especially those who don't like joining forums for whatever reason they have.

I know I'd be in to help with some write-ups.

PS: edesignuk: nice job, very thorough and easy to follow.
I would be interested in designing and hosting this and doing some write ups.

glad to help. like yellow said, wep is lame, but would be better than wide open if your windows card won't support wpa. i would start with the windows box, use the linksys thingy to setup the password (i'll just assume wep for now). linksys usually tries to use hex for wep, so pick 40 bit (short) or 128 bit (long) and enter something. if it will let you use ASCII then you can use letters and numbers. HEX is 0-9 and a-f, sorry if you already knew that..

on the mac, click on the airport thingy at the top of the screen, click on 'other..' and setup the network connection using the 'security' drop down box. pick wep 40/128 hex or ascii to match what you used on the windows box. fill in the rest and hit ok. should be gravy. worked for me using a windows/d-link and a g3 ibook with an original airport card using wep 128. no idea on wpa as i don't have anything that new laying about at the moment. good luck.

Yes, I know about the unsecurity of WEP, but my wireless card, doesn't support WAP ;)

I had already done that, using the lynksis program... but I don't know what's happening that it doesn't work

Here are the options that I have for encrypting the connection:

Lynksis.JPG

And in the WEP Section I can choose between 'Disable', '64 Bits' and '128 Bits' ;)

Another thing, in the mac, the wireless connection appears in Computer-To-Computer Network Section, and you're saying me to choose the option 'Other' in the Networks Section, is that OK?

BTW, the other day I was trying to FTP Server my mac, but I have to Portforward Port 21 on my PC to my internal IP corresponding to Mac. How do I do that?

Tkz in Advance ;)

After I wrote my reply, I went on my mac and selected, to connect to the connection and I don't know what happened that it asked for a WEP Password, lol, this never happened before on this connection :p
But the problem now is that it doesn't accept any password
lol, here is the options on the mac:

mac.JPG

maybe it's some confusion I'm doing

Your going to want to enter your WEP key. If you can get ahold of the whole thing from your PC.

I've done it;) it was a bug (another one) of the linksys software ;)
What about the port forwarding problem that I mentioned on the previous post?
Does anyone knows how to Port Forward (Port 21) from my PC to my mac internal IP?
NOTE that I don't have I Router, I'm sharing my connection from my desktop, to my mac, through a Wireless Card...

First off, thank you for the great help in getting my mac and pc's to communicate with each other on my home network!

I'm new to the mac world, just picked up this G4 over the last weekend. Never having used a mac before, I can't believe how similar it is to the window machines.

When I first installed the mac on the network, it had no problem seeing the 3 pc's, and accessing the shared files from them, but the pc's couldn't see the mac.

I followed your instructions, the pc's see the mac now, but want a password. This is where I'm confused.

None of the 3 pc's have or need passwords to see their contents or share folders on the network.

Are you talking about the the XP administrator log in password? Because the 2 XP macines I built, and when I installed XP, I did not create a password, because I didn't want to be bothered every time my wife and self boot the machines.

Do you know how to create this password now in all 3 window pc's? 2-XP-PRO, and 1-win 98. And is it worth the trouble?

Thanks, charlym

The PCs are looking for the mac user password. If you go into System Preferences, then accounts it says what account your logged in under. That will be the user name. Now all you need is the password.

Thanks for the clue about the password, and it did eventually work!

When I went into the pc window's network, once again the mac didn't show up! But when I went into the mac network settings it showed the 3 pc's!

I went back and checked and did over all of edesignuk guide and settings in the mac, and still no luck seeing the mac on the pc network!

After hours of playing with the 4 computers, rebooting, changing settings, and don't ask me what I did, but I finally got everyone back on board.

Now the previous owner left his username, but no password, and when the 2 XP machines asked for a password, I just put in the user name, and no password, and was able to access the G4, but the windows 98 machine would not give in.

The bottem line is, that I'm using the G4 right now, and I'm able to obtain my bookmarks, and folders to the mac from the pc's.

It's been an interesting couple of days! Thanks for the help.

Strange problem 3 PCs + 1 Mac

My little network includes 4 computers, 3 PCs and one Mac. Here they are:

1) Mac G5 Dual 2.5Ghz w/ Mac OS 10.4.6
2) PC Athlon 1.4Ghz w/ Windows ME
3) PC Compaq Pentium 4 2.93Ghz w/ Windows XP Home v. 2002 S.P. 2
4) PC Pentium III 797Mhz w/ Windows XP Pro 2002

They are all in a workgroup (mshome).
The network is wireless through a Linksys WRT54G, wireless cards in the PCs and AirPort in the Mac. Obviously I followed all possible indications and suggestions and after a few days of fine tuning the network works pretty good. Every computer sees the others and everyone can exchange files with the others. The only problems I have left are the following:

- can't manage to let the Mac automatically connect to the other computers at startup; always have to manually connect to each one of them.

- looks like enabling the PC #3 monitor to be shut off after a period of inactivity makes that PC unreachable by the others. Is this normal/modifiable ?

- PCs #3 and #4 have to type a password when trying to connect to the Mac, and this is normal; but when the PC #2 is asked the same it replies that the password is invalid (which is not, of course).

Any ideas ? Thanks

problems...

I tried connecting thru the PC it says "Login Failure: unknown username or bad password" - trouble is I KNOW the username is right and I never got the chance to enter a password.

I tried from the Mac side and it prompts me for my username and password on the PC but it never fully connects and i get a cryptic "error -36" dialog box with only and OK button.

Any ideas where I am going awry?

Thanks!!

This is only if you want the mac to be able to share files from XP right say access mp3s etc from the PC not if you actually want to connect to the network? Putting my PC (main network computer) into the other room and the mac into my room which has the wireless network isnt going to affect anything is it? sorry for the noobie question

combining wireless and wired WNLAN's

I have a question on a closely related subject - I have a wireless XP WLAN in my house, and a mac (OSX 10.4.7) connects to one of the wireless network PC's via wired ethernet. This wired connection used to allow the mac to access the internet, via internet connection sharing on this PC.

Then, I upgraded the security on the wireless network to WPA - and ever since then I have not been able to get the mac to share the wireless internet connection.

Does the added security make it impossible to do what I used to do? Or, is there still a way to have a mac connected via wired ethernet share an internet connection over a wireless network? Do I need to add a wireless card to the mac to get it online again?

T"hanks,
Trond

Hi edesignuk...new on the site and with a new mac mini trying to use your tutorial. I seem to have everything in order but when I try to access the Mac from my PC I get the error message "the network path was not found" I seem to have the correct info in. I also click off the Account name, etc but still no luck. Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Error -36 Solution

After a half a day of frustration, I've finally fixed my issue. Hopefully it will be of help to some of you as well.

My home wireless network has two computers - an XP SP2 laptop and a Mac OS 10.4 iBook. I had no problems mounting and connecting to the Mac from the PC, but was consistently receiving Error -36 when attempting to mount to the PC from the Mac.

The console.log read RPC struct is bad.
The system.log read Unmapped DOS error 1:70 and no direct map for 32 bit server error.

In attempting to connect via a terminal session using smbclient //server/directory -U username -W workgroup I was able to get a more informative error.

tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_SHARING_PAUSED

After searching on this error code, I found that this might mean that the Server service was paused on my PC. Sure enough, it was, though I'm not sure why. In any event, resuming the service using the Windows services menu fixed the problem.

Thanks again for this informative guide!
