I've started having this problem myself now, but only since a clean install of 10.4 with an immediate upgrade to 10.4.7.wrymanrph said:Hi everyone. I'm a Mac newbie (new MacBook), and new to networking as well. I followed the instructions, and can see my Mac from my PC (running XP), but not the other way. When I go to "Go>Connect to server" and type in the address as requested, I get the following message. "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://my IP/billspc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)" Any ideas as to what I'm missing? Thanks.
I would be interested in designing and hosting this and doing some write ups.mnkeybsness said:YAY!... perhaps we could start a simple site that gives step by step instructions for a lot of these frequently asked questions. I know it would help out a lot of people, especially those who don't like joining forums for whatever reason they have.
I know I'd be in to help with some write-ups.
PS: edesignuk: nice job, very thorough and easy to follow.
4JNA said:glad to help. like yellow said, wep is lame, but would be better than wide open if your windows card won't support wpa. i would start with the windows box, use the linksys thingy to setup the password (i'll just assume wep for now). linksys usually tries to use hex for wep, so pick 40 bit (short) or 128 bit (long) and enter something. if it will let you use ASCII then you can use letters and numbers. HEX is 0-9 and a-f, sorry if you already knew that..![]()
on the mac, click on the airport thingy at the top of the screen, click on 'other..' and setup the network connection using the 'security' drop down box. pick wep 40/128 hex or ascii to match what you used on the windows box. fill in the rest and hit ok. should be gravy. worked for me using a windows/d-link and a g3 ibook with an original airport card using wep 128. no idea on wpa as i don't have anything that new laying about at the moment. good luck.

The PCs are looking for the mac user password. If you go into System Preferences, then accounts it says what account your logged in under. That will be the user name. Now all you need is the password.Charlym said:edesignuk;
First off, thank you for the great help in getting my mac and pc's to communicate with each other on my home network!
I'm new to the mac world, just picked up this G4 over the last weekend. Never having used a mac before, I can't believe how similar it is to the window machines.
When I first installed the mac on the network, it had no problem seeing the 3 pc's, and accessing the shared files from them, but the pc's couldn't see the mac.
I followed your instructions, the pc's see the mac now, but want a password. This is where I'm confused.
None of the 3 pc's have or need passwords to see their contents or share folders on the network.
Are you talking about the the XP administrator log in password? Because the 2 XP macines I built, and when I installed XP, I did not create a password, because I didn't want to be bothered every time my wife and self boot the machines.
Do you know how to create this password now in all 3 window pc's? 2-XP-PRO, and 1-win 98. And is it worth the trouble?
Thanks, charlym
