The pessimism about this product by Apple fans is dazzling.

When I look at it, I keep coming back to a single, simple use (for justification): any size screen (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop) in a mobile package. Hop over to the MB Air 15" thread and people are gushing at the greatness of a screen 2 inches bigger than the one that already exists. Hop over into threads about Studio Display and people gush about how it is the one and only screen for all and nothing else compares. Hop into threads of rumors of a bigger iMac and/or bigger Studio Display screen and people practically froth at the opportunity to spend what should be easily NORTH of $3K for that one.

IF this thing can fool our eyes with virtual REALITY, it can deliver ANY size screen to us anywhere we have these googles.

Some want an iMac 30", some a 32", some want a 30-36" Apple display, some want an ultra-wide, some want various sizes of ultra-wides, some want even bigger iPad screens, even bigger phone screens, 17" MBpro, bigger MBpros, some want multiple screens, foldables/rollables, etc.

Here's a take-it-anywhere, portable device that MIGHT be able to deliver up to an IMAX-sized screen to your Mac laptop... or IMAX iPad... or IMAX iPhone. No crease lines, no rolling. Just slip these on and use any size & shape screen or screens you want.

If so, imagine what might be the bottom half of a MB in the same bag to give you a keyboard and you would have a new kind of laptop with any size of screen.

How much would you pay for a 36" Studio Display to then leave sitting in one place for probably its entire life? $3K??? How much would you pay for a 40-50" Apple Ultra-wide to leave sitting in one place for probably its entire life? $3K???

And that's just one "solution" to a very tangible "problem" that this is already rumored to deliver.

I recently spent north of $2K for a desktop monitor that will forever be stuck in one place. I'd readily pay $1K more than that for that monitor to easily fit in a bag so that I could use it anywhere I go. This is but one likely potential of this product.

"Think different" people! I have zero expectations that this will be only Oculus Plus with an Apple logo on it. I have near zero expectations that this is about gaming. However, I can easily imagine MANY very desirable applications for something that can show our eyes ANYTHING in a realistic way. Can you?
Considering the “display“ factor advantage emphasized in this post: I‘d rather pay the $3K for an M3 iMac with a 30” display ….

I’ll take it.

I see this as not the norm in AR/VR headsets but a leap above the rest. I’d like to see how Apple integrates their iteration of AR into this and how it appears. I could get one if it does more than just a novelty device. But for the price point I vision experiences that will amaze us. I’d get one of the utility applications are above and beyond.

I imagine the launch of PSVR2 has set off a lot of alarm bells at Apple. There is no way they will be getting PS5-level graphics untethered without a massive hit to battery life even from an M2 processor. I know Apple is going for a controller-less form of interaction via the external cameras but is this really the best way? There is also the price to think about. Apple want to charge $3k and you can get a PSVR2+PS5 for less than $1k all-in.

Their biggest hurdle though is the massive amount of market apathy towards VR in general.

The lack of a controller and notion that an "iPhone" would fill in is my biggest gripe.

I oversee a surgical technology program and being able to use just your hands when practicing a surgery would be kinda of awesome - I can see uses for this where controllers suck - but when it comes to games OMG..... hands only as an input is a freak terrible idea.

I do think if anyone can iterate VR/AR to be what it's meant to be, it will be Apple. As more details come out, the more I walk back my optimism for what sounds more like making people pay for a prototype that will be half assed.

I think a big issue with VR headsets is that it further isolates people from reality / the real world. I can see them being used in some work functions, gaming and watching movies, but further removing yourself from the environment by wearing a masked set of goggles just seems antisocial. It’s bad enough that people are on their devices so much. Yes I’m old…
This is no different than everyone on Xbox and PS with live gaming subscriptions. If anything, this tech could at least make those interactions a bit more like real life than they are now ala Call of Duty multiplayer. I think this is more a matter of replacing hours spent on other devices, not adding more hours way form humanity.

Though I do agree with your sentiment.... While I'm rarely annoyed by kids outside playing and screwing around, it's also sad because their in their homes playing together online. When I was a kid, your friends came over and you sat together playing a video game - after hours of climbing trees and breaking your toes on metal tonka trucks. These younger generations really do need to get out more.

Every large tech company in their own area, including Samsung.
Examples? I'm curious to know what, specifically, you would cite.

The point re the iPhone is that it’s been nearly twenty years. If you need to reach further back than that to make the case for Apple, I think it really makes my point that we’re not dealing with the some company.
And my point was that it was more than 20 years from the introduction of the GUI/mouse paradigm and multi-touch. In between? Years and years of incremental innovation until the next big leap. We're in the incremental innovation stage.

And you're right, we're not dealing with the same company. We're dealing with the company that now designs its own highly optimized processors (that more or less outperform everyone else) for its entire product line. What company offers a better cloud syncing solution that integrates so seamlessly across different devices? What consumer electronics company offers a better platform and toolkit for developers?

No company is going to be the leader in every area. I don't think anyone would argue that other companies are more innovative than Apple when it comes to AI, for example. I remain in the Apple camp because I don't see anything more innovative coming from other companies when it comes to phones and computers. I see lots of gimmicks. The Android and PC worlds LOVE gimmicks. There are some areas where I definitely find Apple sorely lacking, home audio for example, but overall, when we're talking products brought to market, I don't see anyone out-innovating Apple.

Because Apple disables devices just because they can, not because it is necessary.

Yeah, my example was a little extreme, but none-the-less the concept still applies.

If you replace you car every 2 to 3 years then you must be part of the elite and therefore, of course, it does not apply to you. Nothing seems to apply to elites any more.
I don't believe this. Just because maybe it can't run the latest OS or they reduce processor speed doesn't mean it is disabled. My iBook from 2000 still works, my Mac Pro from 10 years ago still works, my iMac from 6 years ago still works, my old iPad's and iPhones all still work. I own a pizzeria, the cars are used for deliveries, they get killed. I work 7 days a week between restaurant and playing music and I don't think I'm elite, but if I didn't work I'd be just as broke as everyone else. I went to college to be a math teacher. My personal car was a 2013 VW Beetle diesel with 200k miles that I just traded in for a 2023 plug-in hybrid.

Old Apple computers that still work does not mean they are secure to use for today's WAN. Not sure about you, but I would want my car secure at all times, no matter how old the OS is. That is not in Apple's DNA.
