I'm guessing a larger consumer iMac will eventually arrive, probably in the 27" size. But it will be a CONSUMER level machine in every sense. Less ports, lower-end processor (M-3?).

I can't see another iMac Pro in our future. I think the Studio is going to keep that space due to the variety of ports available, the Max and Ultra processors, and the ability to add as many displays as you desire. This fits more with "pro" needs.

This scheme is also easier for Apple to offer the products at a price customers can swallow.

An iMac Pro while Mac Studio and new display are around??
Biiiiig doubt about this…..

Who knows what the iMac Pro would even be now. If they released a larger version of the M1 iMac, but with the M1 Pro chip in it (for argument's sake), that might take away a lot of potential customers for an iMac Pro.

Not to mention the Mac Studio and Studio Display/XDR combo has also taken away some of those customers for whom an iMac Pro might have been an option (I count myself as one of them).

How could they differentiate a standalone iMac Pro from the rest of their lineup - other than it being an all-in-one machine obviously?

The iMac Pro was a much-loved machine by those of us who bought it, but it was a short-term fix until the Mac Pro came along and the M1 chips have since addressed a lot of the other shortcomings in the Intel-based lineup which made people buy the iMac Pro.

Your musings make sense if you're considering only 'iMac Pro'.

But the thing is there are people out there, myself included, who would be happy with a non-Pro iMac that has a choice of display sizes. As @profets posted above, something in the 30-32" region would be lovely.

How long has Gurman been saying this? Pretty much since about the launch of the M1 chip. I might be off by a few days, but hey, he's been saying it for a long time and there's still no proof to back this up. I'm definitely taking this with a massive pinch of salt, and I'll believe it when I see it.

considering how powerful the Studio is, not sure an iMac Pro is a desirable product. but I wouldn't know the target audience, if there is one.
Exactly, a bigger monitor would be way more desirable, pro's generally don't want an iMac.

I have a 4K LG at the moment and it's a great monitor but scaling is a bit off, the 5K iMac 27 inch has way better scaling. For that alone, I would buy an Apple monitor.

In my case I want a desktop mac, because I have a 27" iMac "late 2013" and I do not need a M1 Max or Ultra, but a normal M1 is insufficient for a Mac. The M1 Pro seems to me to be the ideal intermediate term for my use.

But there is only one computer that is equipped with the M1 Pro processors, and that is the MacBook Pro. But I don't want a laptop, and the desktop doesn't offer any with that processor.

It is rumored that the Mac mini will come out with the M2 and M2 Pro. It could be an option, although I find the Studio Display very expensive for what it offers (in Europe 1799 euros).

The iMac 24" M1 is insufficient in power and screen size. I would love to see a 27" (or 30") iMac with the M1 Pro, because it is just what I need, just as I bought the 27" iMac at the time with medium/high specs to have a powerful computer that, after 9 years, is still running with very decent performance.

I like the aesthetics and simplicity of the all in one, but I was already giving up on the launch of a larger version of the iMac. With this, I don't know whether to wait any longer or jump into buying the Mac mini M2 Pro and the Studio Display when it comes out.

Yeah, if you are a desktop fan (royal "you") and you don't want a 24 inch pastel colored computer and you're not in need of Max or greater, Apple has really left you with crummy choices.

I still have my iMac Pro and continue to love it. I'm not going to replace it until I see what Apple does with any new display options (beyond the Studio Display) and if they release an iMac larger than the 24" model.

I don't think they will specifically manufacture or market an "iMac Pro" anymore. If anything, a Pro chip option could be build-to-order.

I'm guessing we haven't seen a larger iMac yet because they are targeting a new display technology for its introduction or waiting for the "M3 Pro" chip which will have better performance than the higher-end (multi-core) iMac Pro models but meet the thermal requirements for their new enclosure.

The Mac Studio obsoleted the Mac Pro as we know it. There may be room on the market for an old-fashion Mac Pro (using standard PC components, SSDs+HDDs, memory, video card, sound card ...) but I don't see Apple going back in this direction.
Well, Apple has already said the Mac Pro is coming. Knowing the Mac Pro is coming, what do you envision the Mac Pro to be? Just curious. Personally I think it will be have more memory options, etc. and will be more expandable than the Mac Studio, but I don't see any third party video card options.

I do think that would be a nice way to fit it into the product line. Still an iMac, M1/M2/M3 (not Pro/Ultra), but just a larger display. It could fill the gap between 24” iMac and Mac mini/Studio + Studio Display.

I start to wonder at times though if the bump in size to 24” left Apple thinking it was sufficient as the sold iMac option in the lineup.

I think that's two different markets, right? Would an M2 iMac take sales away from a Studio that STARTS with a Max chip?
Yeah, but there are people that are in the middle of the two different markets, where the Studio is overkill, but the M1 iMac underwhelms. Especially people that are looking to replace their aging 27" intel iMacs. They might be leaning towards the Mac Studio now, but if there was an M2 24" iMac, they might settle for that instead.

I could be wrong, of course. I don't think anyone knows their reasoning, except Apple.

Exactly! I'm not a very demanding user, because on my diary workflow, I use an iPad Pro 2020 12.9" for my daily work, which in the end is not very demanding outside of work either. Browsing, music, photo editing and with the iPad drawing as well.

With the iMac, the most demanding thing I do now is play games, and the games I have on the Mac I have them with the graphics on high/ultra, and the truth is that they move very decently. I don't play a lot on the Mac (I have the XBox Series X), but I like to enjoy the game when I do it eventually.

I find that the M1 at the graphics level will underpowered for me with games, so I would consider the M1 Pro with 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores, with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, or the equivalent of the M2 Pro or M3 Pro.

If I go for an M1 Max, I think it would be a very high outlay for a device that I would hardly take advantage of (2329 euros in Europe, having to add the screen and peripherals, it's out of my price range).

So, seeing that the iMac 27" with M1 Pro was not going to come out, I was convinced to buy the next Mac mini with the M2 Pro and buy the Apple display and replace my iMac (which really, is still working perfectly). But with this news I'm hesitating again whether to wait more to see if the iMac "Pro" finally comes out (I don't need to change my computer urgently), or to buy the Mac mini when it comes out.

The iMac has always been the best computer I ever had. Always owned an iMac since 2006.

Until I now require two screens when doing presentations and taking notes or verifying things on the side.

Still wondering if I'm not going to buy a base refurbished Mac Studio + Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 + Webcam + Speakers. Two problems with that : lots of wires, and the resolution of this display will bring me back in 2013 with my iMac 27in.

I don't understand why there won't be a 24" iMac with an M2 chip, replacing the M1, either later this year or early next. This should be a relatively easy thing to do requiring minimal engineering resources. They did this with the 13" MacBook Pro. Why wait for the M3?
Because iMac users are the new mid 2010s Mac mini users! 🙃

you have mac studio and two mac mini still around....so nothing to doubt for
mac studio is the traditional come with your own display and keyboard...and now we have 3 of those M1 mac mini, Intel mac mini and M1 series mac studio while the imac (all in one) is just one the M1

I saw the Apple Studio Display next to the 24" iMac the other day, and the iMac looked entirely underwhelming in comparison.

If they would just put a computer inside the Studio Display (and ideally replace the potato with an actual webcam), thats all I want in a 27" iMac.

They cannot possibly release such a great device with just a basic processor like that.
I like my iMac but it has many drawbacks actually with the M1. I want a powerhouse of a computer like I could have before.

“for the pro market” great . For normal consumers the ugly 21” iMac with white bezels is sufficient…

Normal consumers pay the bill, but for Apple they are just a nuisance.
