I see lots of requests for a revamped 12" Macbook Air. What's the point? Get the 13" or an iPad instead. The 13" is already thin and light. That'd be a redundant product imo.
False the 13" is not remotely thin and light in the same way it could be if Apple said here's a new MacBook in an iPad Pro like frame plus keyboard. Apple did not remotely try with the new Air design to push the design boundaries smh.

Agreed.

Apple’s main problem in the computer space is that the M1 release was TOO successful. I believe that so many people bought M1 machines that there was little market left for the M2s. Not only that, but people have been, and continue to be, extremely happy with the performance of their M1s.

I think M3 will help to boost computer sales simply because many will be on an upgrade cycle from M1. M1 was released in 2020, and if M3 is released next year it will be 4 years since many consumers had upgraded. However, my M1 mini still runs nicely and I’m in no hurry to upgrade, and I imagine many others being in the same boat.
Please, don't say it was a mistake. This is how it should be. It should be the norm. I don't need a new computer every other year, extremely few of us actually need it!
We should all learn to buy better, buy less. God, this planet is becoming a pile of junk because of our greed.

This is really frustrating for me right now. I need a laptop but don’t need a top-of-the line machine. However, I do need 16/512. To get the 13 inch MBA it would cost $1600. For another $400 I can get a better screen, more ports, and a better processor. It doesn’t make sense to buy an upgraded MBA when I can get an all around better machine with the 14 inch pro.
Then, haven't you already answered your question? ;)

While M3 is always a possibility, I believe Apple is going to release the 15 inch Air with M2 and lower the price of the 13 inch (discontinuing M1 MBA). Lowering the price of the M1 MBA to $999 and selling the 15 inch at $1199 will satisfy enough people that the lack of M3 won’t be much of a disappointment.
MBA 15" for 1200$ ?? Dream on!!

That's subjective. I have the m1 air and I can hardly feel it in my backpack. A little heft would prevent me from thinking it has been stolen. 2. Ports, ports, ports.

You're not going to edit an 8k videos on a 12" MacBook anyway. I really don't understand people who want the 12" back, when there are so many iPad options out there.

In 2023, the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra is horribly overpriced. When it initially came out it made waves but fast forward today, you can get significantly more CPU and GPU performance in a PC for the same price. On desktop, performance per watt is is irrelevant. Apple Silicon is leading edge in laptops but on desktop, Apple can’t compete.
I wouldn't say irrelevant. Fan noise and heat do matter for desktops (especially fan noise). At the same time, I think Apple could give a bit more love to their desktop line by recognizing that efficiency is *less* important in desktops, and leveraging this to offer higher-clocked (and thus higher-performing) CPU's & GPU's for their desktop devices, something they've not yet done. Their current clocks are low enough that they could make them significantly faster while still offering class-leading efficiency.

For me it wasn't the fingerprints putting me off the Midnight color, but stories about the paint chipping off and revealing the silver underneath.

I don't know if I'll be getting the 15" Air, but if I do, it probably won't be that color, as cool as it looks.
Oh dang! I hadn’t heard about that. Isn’t it anodized? If so, actual chipping would surprise me. Scratches revealing the silver below is what I’d think was more likely. But chipping? Oof…

I really wish they recreated this with an M1 - my 2017 12" MacBook was such a perfect little travel companion!
The 13” IS that perfect little travel companion. Seriously. I’ve had several 12” MacBooks. The 13” MBA is so svelte, I think you’d be quite pleased. I’m blown away at its portability + power. It’s been my favorite Apple laptop to date. And I’ve owned several over the years.

The good news is you don't even have to spend $400 more to get an all-around better machine! Look on deal sites like Slickdeals.com and you'd find a recent $1500 deal for MBP 16 M1 from Costco and 14" MBP M1's go on sale for $1500 all the time. So actually for $100 less than an upgraded MBA 13 get you a "Pro" MacBook and all the better features that come with that.

Put the 15" MBA in the mix and now you're going to have a real hard time deciding which to get.

If those 15" Intel laggards really wanted to upgrade, they'd have taken advantage the 100 or so sales on the MBP14 for $1500 where they would get features and performance you'll not see on an Air. With the 15" MBA, the price differential between it and other M1 Pro and M2 products is going to start being the same or just a bit more making it very hard to decide if features and performance are important over thin-and-light.
15” Intel owner here. Literally what I’m waiting for is a machine that will exceed my current one in every specification - something that is not offered now, and something that will not be offered in an M2, specifically because of RAM.

I need:
  • 15” or larger screen in a form factory that is the same size/weight as the 15” intel or smaller/lighter (I’m sure a 15” Air will check this box - the 14” and 16” Pro DO NOT)
  • Same or greater performance (any M chip checks this box)
  • At least 12 hour battery life (any M chip checks this box)
  • Same or greater RAM (currently have 32gb - M2 tops out at 24gb, waiting on M3 for this)
If it can be configured with 32gb RAM it’s an instant buy for me. If it can’t it’s an instant no for me. It’s that simple. I suspect I am not the only 15” Intel owner that will feel this way. They need M3 (or M2 Pro) to make this a true 15” intel replacement.

Yeah I've had both form factors and the 13 is great - I just loved the 12" because the form factor was so small, no bezels, no speakers around the keyboard, just over a pound or so - loved it!

TSMC has secretly pulled in their N3E schedule, there is no M3 this summer. TSMC has publicly stated many times N3E is H2 2023.
N3E is on track for M4 and A18 production in 2024.

Not going to happen. the company that keeps base models at ridiculously low configurations (compared to every other PC maker) so they can upsell (overcharge) upgrades to decent minimum specs for an extra $400 (when it's worth about $40 at retail anywhere else)

While I get your sentiment and agree Apple’s upgrades are overpriced, have you looked at the base configuration for “every other PC maker”? Some are pretty darn low, including even some screens and processors that are barely useable.

Apple will begin accepting trade-ins of three new Mac models on June 5, the day of Apple's WWDC 2023 keynote event, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In a tweet shared earlier today, Gurman said that the Mac Studio, 13-inch M2 MacBook Air, and 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro, will become eligible for trade-in with Apple on Monday, June 5. Gurman is expecting new Mac hardware to be unveiled during Apple's keynote on June 5, including an all-new 15-inch MacBook Air model. "Read into that as you will," he added.

Apple introduced the Mac Studio in May 2022, offering M1 Max and M1 Ultra chip configurations. Despite the launch of a range of Macs with the M2, M2 Pro, and M2 Max chips, Apple has not yet refreshed the Mac Studio. Gurman believes that two new Mac Studio models are in the works, but is unsure of when they will launch.

He has previously cast doubt over the possibility of update being announced at WWDC, suggesting that Apple is more likely to wait until the M3 generation to update the Mac Studio as to avoid cannibalizing the Apple silicon Mac Pro. Even so, updated Mac Studio models with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chip options are not out of the question for WWDC.

13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with the M3 chip are also rumored to be in development, but the first M3 Macs are not expected to launch until toward the end of the year. As such, Gurman's latest information about new Mac trade-ins does not necessarily that indicate direct successors for all of the aforementioned devices are on the immediate horizon.

If they launch the studio with an M2 chip, it will flop like the M2 Pro's, IMO the only new Mac will be the M2 15 inch and maybe a chassis upgrade for the M2 13 pro although very unlikely

I need a laptop but am waiting to see what Apple releases next week. Even if they release the Air, without a significant drop in the Air’s price, I will probably get a 14 inch MBP.

My speculation is that Apple is going to discontinue the M1 MBA and could lower the price of the M2 MBA to $999 to keep a device in that price range. Current sales of M1 MBAs are $799, some of the lowest prices, which leads me to the idea of them being discontinued. If they then lower the 13 inch air to $999, they could place the 15 inch at $1,199, which would be an enticing price for the low-end of Apple’s line-up.
There is absolutely no way the 15 inch air will be $1,199

I agree with this, the only thing I don’t understand is why Apple has decided to launch the new 15” MacBook Air at WWDC. It will look the same as the 13” with the same M2 chip, a press release would have done. Also why not hold off until the M3 and release the same chip in the Air and Pro all at the same time.
They need to do something to up their Mac sales hence the 15 inch, but it will definitely not be M3, which after the initial excitement of a 15 ", those people will think twice about buying it, as it will be obsolete in the new year, when the M3's are launched

MacBook Air is for the lower end market, always has been, it's only competitively priced in it's basic configuration, personally, if you consider, the screen, the speakers & 120MHZ refresh, the basic 14 inch pro is much better value for money, if you go for the discounted M1 version of the 14 inch, it's a no brainer

You'll find the 24gb of RAM on an M chip is at least as fast as 32gb on an Intel, if not faster 😊
