Gurman: Apple Watch Series 8 to Bring 'Major Updates to Activity Tracking'

There are PLENTY of rugged cases you can put on an Apple Watch. Many around $20.

Don't do that to yourself. After my experience with the AW6, I'll be going back to Garmin. HR drops out on me all the time, which is unfortunate when a lot of my core training right now is based around HR instead of other metrics. I used to see people online talk about it, and always defended Apple and that is must have been a glitch. Well about a year in I started having the same problems. It's every workout now, whether it's running, outdoor bike, or indoor bike, and doesn't matter if my wrist is straight the whole time, or how tight the watch is.

Why is the title “Major Changes”, when no new sensors or features are coming. Potentially a new watch or size. I swear Gurman is setting poor expectations and leaving people more upset, than Apple is by not releasing this product with have “MAJOR” expectations for.

I just ordered a Series 7 yesterday to upgrade from my almost 3 years old Series 4. Not cancelling and not getting a Series 8.

You have the gps only version? Having the cellular version is nice when you go on a run/walk/bike/hike or if you go to a beach or waterpark. Still available for calls and texts in addition to the regular fitness tracking.
I don’t get it. It’s easy to carry a phone when biking, and running/walking doesn’t take you away from your phone for very long - an hour for most maybe?

I had series 2 and 4. The one thing my Garmin still can’t do that I actually use once in a while is remote control of the iPhone camera for making videos, but gps, timers, notifications, music, and payment are no longer exclusive features. I need to see big battery life improvements to buy one again.

Until BP is polished & on the watch, will keeping my AW 5 and might even replace the battery if needed.
Still runs like new with 86% capacity. ?

Temperature under the watch not useful. Pressure cannot be obtained without a cuff because physics. Blood sugar is currently impossible without blood. So…none of these are happening. I will happily makes bets to that effect.

When my 5 dies I'm not sure if I'll get another Apple Watch unless there is a big improvement (especially in battery life) between now and then. My Series 5 (I've had a 0,1,4 and now 5) pretty much goes into low power mode around 7pm everyday. I think just a good fitness tracker that can display notifications might be the way for me to go next. I rarely use it for anything else as it just isn't a pleasant experience and I usually get frustrated and just pull out my iPhone anyway.
Wow. I have been using my series 4 since it came out and even with a 60 min run where it is tracking GPS, HR, and playing music through Bluetooth I never enter low power mode. I think your battery is just unlucky.

I hear you. But until you've tried it, you don't realize what your missing. You may not be missing enough to justify the cost, but you really don't know until you've used that feature. I'm not here to sell you a watch, but I know it works for us. Don't have to worry about my kids losing their phones when a watch will do the job. Worth $10/month to me all day long.

I'm going to be hard pressed to not upgrade to the 8, even if its not that special. I have been using a release day AW3, and while its held up spectacularly, I would like to use my watch for more than what I'm currently using the 3 for. I've held out upgrading because I want a new design. I'm really hoping the rumored flat design is brought to fruition at least on one of the versions, and would hope its the top tier version (ceramic or steel).

Just can’t develop the urge to want an Apple Watch. Maybe one day.
I’m not sure what apps you use or how you use your iPhone, but the Watch is the kind of thing where you won’t realize its use until you use it yourself.

You might not like it, but it has a ton of use and is just so convenient when you don’t want to take out your phone or if you left it home.

Fitness tracking could be improved indeed, even without new sensors. I wish I could make the Watch use its own gps even when it is connected to the phone. Heart rate measuring could always be even better than it already is (and maybe the series 7 is already better than my series 4)? Activities could start supporting cycling power data. Etc.

That is what I hoped for each time I've upgraded. However it is now been 4 watches (0,1,4 and 5) with similar results.

Would be nice if Apple fixed the erratic heart rate issue. Often while working out if my HR gets near 120 it will “all on its own” jump to 140+ and remain there though my actual HR is nowhere near that. I’ve tried various tricks I’ve seen in other threads (resetting AW7, removing AW from phone and reconnecting, etc.) to no avail. This occurred with my AW 5 and continues most days with my AW7. To me, the HR is inconsistent and near useless while working out, whether running, using elliptical, etc.

….As does every analyst on this site that makes predictions with future Apple products.

Except Gurman use to (maybe still does) had insider info...and leaked what was coming with pretty good accuracy.

Nowadays, his predictions are very often what he'd like to see. They're no different than what you read here on MacRumors.

Looking forward to a rugged watch. The S3 really needs to go at this point. Since we probably aren't getting any new sensors I really hope we get better sleep tracking. I still wear my Fitbit just for the sleep tracking.

Mark is guessing how is it the biggest upgrade since first one with no new sensors or design

So if the upgrade is mostly software, hopefully we'll get better metrics across the board and available to previous generations of AW.

Perhaps new hardware design in the rugged version. I'm guessing Apple can go bigger and thicker if only to achieve longer battery life.

The SE remains the same with maybe a price cut.

The standard AW8 needs feature to distinguish it from the AW7. With no new sensors, what could that be other than a minor speed bump?

Seems your battery isn't holding up. My 4 still holds battery all day long without issue, despite working out for 2+ hours a day and often even more than that. And that's with just 77% of my original capacity as far as battery health sits.

I would love a feature-light but much thinner Apple Watch. I tried owning two over the years and couldn’t get used to it.
