Siri is built into the OS. It would require an OS update but that doesn’t mean it requires a major release. There are lots of small releases throughout the year. Still, it would be likely that they reserve a change like this for a major version release like 17.0

When they incrementally improve the "hey siri" voice recognition model to be more accurate, they can definitely update it without an OS update. iOS gets updates periodically from here https://mesu.apple.com/assets/com_a.../com_apple_MobileAsset_VoiceTriggerAssets.xml

But making it work on "Siri" alone might need changes to the code that uses that data, and to the user interface, so maybe it will need an OS update. Or maybe they'll want to do it as part of an OS update even if not technically necessary, just to make things clearer for users.

I'm trying to figure out what the point of this is. The extra split second required to say "hey" is insignificant. I don't see the point of reworking everything to eliminate it.

Do you know what would be even better? Multi-lingual support. How much better would it be if you could set 2 languages on Siri? She already knows the message I receive it's not in English. When I'm wearing my headphones, she said someone send you a message that is not in English would you like me to read it? It would be very nice to be able to say it yes read it in portuguese.

DON’T DO IT!!! Amazon has gotten rid of having to say Alexa and it is SO annoying. She’s always listening and she interrupts me when it is totally inappropriate. I’m about to just throw all my Alexa’s away. Half the time it’s like she now has a schizophrenic personality.

Apple needs to keep the “Hey Siri”. What they NEED to do is they need to create a Siri chip. Voice recognition is the future. They could design a chip that would make Siri more accurate and her responses would be instant. Also you could use her even when you didn’t have an internet connection. They should also be working on macOS XX and it should have voice recognition at its core. In the future you will not use the the mouse or the keyboard as the primary input device. You will use your voice. Apple has the chance to come out with a revolutionary OS and that means they need to create a Siri chip.

Never used siri, or any smart assistant for that matter.
I find it dissociating to ask a computer for things to do, like I would with a person, and I'd rather have more control on what I'm interacting with.
I also don't like my device constantly "listening", however I'm sure it still listens 24/7.
Still, it is a placebo piece of mind that makes me feel better.

There's something creepier about alexa, even compared to other smart assistant.
I know they all listen 24/7 but Amazon is an especially shady company and there have been some unsettling scandals, like the echo-dots recording sensitive conversations, recordings being leaked to random users and hackers taking control of the Amazon hardware.
Pretty nasty.

If you have a Sarah in the house, Siri becomes...really, really challenging. I imagine the same would be for Alexa.

Amazon won't work in a house that has somebody named Alexa. Same thing with Apple. All they have to do is allow the users to customize their own trigger phrase. It's that simple.

Still think it would be cool to get up to speed with how Starfleet do this: “Computer…”
I know this is a late reply, but Alexa does allow the user to chose from a few different words: Alexa, Amazon, Echo, or Computer.

Not a ton of options, but at least it's something...

Yep, and precisely what Siri needs. Said earlier in thread, to make HomePod work properly, I have to disable Siri on everything else.

Apple love to claim its intelligent enough to know which device I want, but that’s nonsense. If I leave it on phone and iPad and say “Hey Siri play Help by the Beatles”, one of several things happen;

-HomePod plays immediately (rarely/never)
-all device screens light up, Siri flashes, long pause (very common) followed by variations of “I can’t do that” from random device, or music plays from iPhone/iPad, or “you can do this on HomePod”
-whatever I was playing on iPhone previously, including podcast, plays
-other random nonsense

Useless and utterly embarrassing given how long Siri has been around.

But what about the photos app? This one Apple has forgotten about for much longer.

Nobody can seriously tell me, that the programmers responsible really use the photos app.

Even today you cannot have a list view of your albums. How is this possible in 2022?

Just FYI - the programmers don't make these decisions. They just code the features they are told to code. The Product Owners/Managers define this sort of stuff, along with the design team.

I agree with some posters, but I would rather them make Siri more useful than getting rid of "Hey". I'd actually be against them doing that as I'd want to reduce accidental triggering of Siri, not making Siri turn on easier or by herself.
