Oh I guess it’s just an apple weather widget, either way it works for me. If I need a detailed forecast I have to use the weather channel still even in my phone cus apples still doesn’t show enough

So you don’t think its at all weird that the watch, phone and mac have a calculator app but the iPad doesn’t? GOT IT!

Seriously, defending apple on this by anyone is a giant head scratcher
No? How many people are using calculators on an iPad? Probably not many. Sure as hell not enough for Apple to waste resources making a free app for.

Gurman is a bit of a fraud. He essentially plays safe with his "predications" and "inside scoops" by stating the bleeding obvious all the time!

At one point he was worth listening to, but not anymore.
Most people who do predictions for a living are frauds. They either have to make their predictions so general as to render them pointless or make specific predictions and resign to the fact that most of the time they will be wrong.

They would be if Apple made one! When’s the last time you or anyone used the voice memos app on iPad.

Whats your excuse for them making a calculator on the watch?

I don't think neomorphic design is the direction apple need to take, basically it is flat design + shadows & depth, nothing more.
IMO, apple direction should be a crafted modern UI design which is made from planet earth materials, to make the software feel like it is made from the same materials around you while perfectly blend with the hardware.
That's a very interesting approach :)

I use Spotlight search or Siri for relatively simple calculations on the iPad or Mac.

But Apple really just needs to port those iPhone apps over to the iPad, if for no other reason that launching the calculator from Control Center.

Still don't get the level of anger over this, when (a) the Apple calculator app on the iPhone isn't that amazing and (b) the iPad is capable of running the literally thousands of calculator apps on the App Store. It's so much whining over a problem that is so easy for any individual to remedy for themselves. If you can't pick out a good app on your own, try PCalc - it's well liked by many, fairly customizable, and has a history going back before the iPhone existed.

It doesn't have to be amazing, it just has to be.

It's not so much the effort to find an alternative to the calculator, it's the fact that Apple has omitted one, and how much of an oversight it seems to be.

Buy a good app. Jeez. You can crash a thousand dollars on an iPad but not a few dollars on a good calculator or a subscription to a good weather app?

I don't see any value in subscribing to a good weather app when access to the weather is commonplace. These days a weather app should be standard, not an add on. If we paid a subscription for every little convenience it would almost impossible to manage.

They've already made a calculator app on every other Apple OS, it wouldn't be too difficult.

I bet most who does actual work on an iPad (rather than just dicking around on the couch) has needed one at some point. We could use spotlight, but it would be more efficient to use an app.

Computers at their core are calculators on steroids. To not have a calculator app on it is quite an irony.

If Windows Phone 7 and IOS 7 were examples of a fresh design back then, then I guess I´m old and tired, because to me IOS 6 (and previous versions) was a million times better.

Digressing, Microsoft shouldn't have dropped their phone OS. It was finally an alternative to Android/ iOS. If they kept integrating it with Windows and pushing forward they might have been able to do something with it. As much as I'm an Apple fanboy, I admired the Windows phone and saw some potential there.

When you see a company drop products all the time, it doesn't make you want to invest in any new product they create.

  1. Multilingual Personal Requests for Siri in a multilingual environment.
  2. HomeKit improvements, foundation work for Matter.
  3. Finder-esque file manager in iPadOS.
  4. Some limited customization of the status bar.
  5. A new UI language starting with iOS 16 then gradually trickling down to macOS.

I'd just be happy if iPad could use an external monitor properly.

We could see
  1. Apple Pencil for iOS.
  2. Notification synchronization across all devices.
  3. A password manager.
  4. Dictionary as a new App.
  5. Split screen for iPhone Pro Max.
  6. Privacy Relay evolving towards a full-fledged VPN.
  7. Apple Search as an option.
  8. New API to allow the ability to have FaceTime chats with Android devices.
  9. New API to allow the ability to send messages from Messages to Android devices.
  10. Merging of FaceTime with Messages like most other messaging apps.
  11. Disappearing messages and the ability to delete messages for all.
  12. Multilingual Personal Requests for Siri in a multilingual environment.
  13. HomeKit improvements, foundation work for Matter.
  14. Finder-esque file manager in iPadOS.
  15. Some limited customization of the status bar.

I do agree with much of what you post there but am confused by this one?
”14. Finder-esque file manager in iPadOS.”

There already is a “finder-escue file manager” called Files. It may not have some features that Finder has but it is available and a place to start. Are there specific things missing from Files that you would like them to add?

Since you asked, I use it several times a month to record video voiceovers for work. Then I copy the recordings to iCloud, compress them into a single ZIP with Files, and send the ZIP to the creative dept with Teams.

This is really to echo the news that Apple is working to deliver a macOS-like experience on an iPad when it's attached to a keyboard.

I just don't see an unwieldy column view and touch-based UI that Files currently has as part of a macOS-like experience.

If you don't like the columns view, just use list view or icon view.

I agree. It was pretty solid in terms of performance and features.

There has to be something new in iOS 16…Hopefully
In any case don’t expect too much and you won’t be disappointed

It's not like Microsoft didn't try.

The Metro interface is beautifully employed on Windows Phone but it's also a constant reminder of the debacle that is Windows 8. Microsoft's feud with Google resulted in the YouTube boycott. This is on top of a general disinterest amongst app developers in the new mobile platform.

Microsoft's middle-of-the-road approach failed. It has too much software in its DNA and never wanted to control its hardware as Apple does. Yet neither is it a service juggernaut like Google, which leveraged its dominance in video streaming and maps to death against its competitors.

No YouTube (this was in the early 2010s, mind you), no apps, disgruntled hardware partners, its days were numbered. It actually should have ended much earlier if it weren't for Microsoft's deep coffer. There is no way Microsoft could have "kept integrating it with Windows and pushing forward" with a single-digit market share.

It's really too bad because Windows Phone could have been Microsoft's redemption. It was really fast and its UI was way ahead of its time. Its integration with Windows was also done beautifully.

So... complain if Apple forces an app to be installed on your phone, but also complain if Apple doesn't offer one. Got it.

Ffs just let me clear my home screen and arrange apps and widgets however I please. It's my phone. I don't want it to look like everyone else's. Yes, shortcuts and automations exist and I use them but it's insane that we have to jump through so many hoops in order to have basic customization. And 15.4 introduced a new bug so now script animation stutters and you have to swipe it away. If you don't do it in time your screen freezes and you have to lock and unlock the phone so you could continue using it. It's ridiculous
