The iPad’s OS has always been its weak point. And they’ll —never— allow it to be a laptop replacement.
Gotta remember, Apple’s game plan is for people to buy BOTH a laptop and an iPad
The only way Apple will change this mindset is if there is a noticeable bump in customers jumping off the Apple ship to the Microsoft surface. I’ve been an Apple user for many years, but for the past few years have had to use a Microsoft Surface Pro at work. I thought I would hate it, but actually began to realize that it is a pretty darn good computer that uses the full Windows OS, but can function totally as a laptop or a tablet. Now, granted, I prefer Mac OS, but if Apple doesn’t get over itself, AND make the iOS fully functional yet still simple to use (remember Steve Jobs would fire anyone who said something can’t be done on a computer) then I might be tempted to jump ship also.

Good point. If I could afford it I probably would jump that way right now. I like the iPad a lot, but I am frustrated by what I perceive to be unnecessary limitations on it. Not necessarily wanting full MacOS, though that would be nice, but many things could be so much better and surely iPad OS has had time for those things to happen by now

That’d have to be a HUGE spike in sales for the Surface. The iPad sells more units than Dell sells laptops in a year, so Microsoft would first have to outsell Dell.

The line of surface computers seem to be losing traction with consumers and Microsoft is increasingly selling to enterprise. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for competition to spur Apple to bring macOS to the iPad, or do I have any desire to see this happen.

I was thinking the new iPad Pro might come for the WWDC, but there are practically no fresh rumors at all about iPP or MacBook Air M2..

In my mind, the story and focus should be on the new iPadOS. The M2 chip and MagSafe are gimmick sales tactics without a more robust OS.
Looks like we got the answer to the OS upgrade and the M2 will take advantage of it.

I feel vindicated. I have had my M1 iPad Pro being the most recent newest release ever since 2021. I was one of those who was shorted by having the iPad 3 being replaced immediately by iPad four. Restitution at last!

I'd like to downsize my 12.9" iPad Pro to 11" if they bring the new display technology to the smaller device.

I may be in a minority, but I wish I could get either an iPad Air with the display of the Pro or opt for an iPad Pro with an A15/A16 chip. For my use cases all the extra GPU cores and power of the M1 (or X variants) is largely wasted and, in my opinion, battery life on the recent Pros is only "okay."
I love my iPad Air (miss my iPad Air 2 but the new one’s pencil support is great). But when the pro comes out I’ll upgrade to the 12.5 inch. Once I started taking notes on it the 11 form factor was too small.

not sure the new pro will be worth it for me…but when it arrives the current version will be cheaper.
