So I took a look at my apps running in the background to test this and they neither refresh or reset.

ios became better at handling refresh but here is what you are not getting to clarify.

Apps that are usually do not get updates from somewhere like Pages or E-mail and most of what you showed in your video get saved in what they call a saved state, it means when you go back to it , it reloads exactly to where it was before.

There are other apps that do refresh and do no have a "save state" . For example, the YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter app. If you keep them long enough in the back ground and come back to them, they will refresh and load whatever new info/news/posts are made. This kind of behaviour usually does not happen in desktop apps , as everything remains where it was prior. Some other apps do refresh maybe like the Wikipedia app where if you keep an article in the background and come back to it later on it would refresh to the Wikipedia home page.

just clarification.

Your question was “I would like to know what an iPad with keyboard is better at than a macbook”. An iPad with keyboard is a better drawing device than a MacBook with keyboard.

I thought it would be clear from my question that "How is the screen+keyboard combo is better on iPad than Macbook" because I am just going to guess people who use a keyboard and ipad, use it in upright position and are not drawing at the screen at the same time because thats about the most uncomfortable way to draw on a screen. Correct me if I am wrong.

IMO , you are prefering the iPad over a macbook which I can see why in your case. Using the iPad keyboard-less will give you the same amount of benefits over a macbook so yeah they difference here is not the keyboard aspect.

I do understand where you are coming from and that I am a unique use case scenario that fits with a minority of iPad users, but it is a use case that fits a large minority. As iPadOS evolves that minority will keep growing and I believe will be able to become the majority. Just like laptops overtook the desktop as people's main computer, I believe that tablet devices will overtake the laptop as the main computer device in the near future. The hardware is already there.

When I responded to you, I didn't mean to be so vague. Most of the things I use the iPad with a keyboard for I find easier because once I create something like a document or pdf it is easier for me to edit or annotate, and then send off to a client than it is for me on a laptop. In general, to me a laptop OS is cumbersome compared to the iPadOS and most everything can be done in less steps, with less devices, whether using a keyboard or not. Again, I understand that this is my experience and not everyone else.

BTW....I am a Trekkie and see possibilities for tablet computers that most people don't.

I don’t know if this is intentional or not, but you are attempting to change the goalposts now. People have already illustrated why the iPad with keyboard can be advantageous over a MacBook.

Your response now is “some of those advantages are just because it’s an iPad, and some of those features don’t work as well when a keyboard is attached”. Since you don’t seem to realize… Well, that’s the point. It has advantages precisely because it is an iPad and it can be optionally used with a keyboard too. Some of its advantage is that it is a very flexible device.

As for your criticism of cellular that it can’t be used in the boonies… Are you just deflecting now? Do you criticize iPhones too for not working in the Arctic tundra?

Also, it sounds like you’ve never used a cellular enabled iPad. iPhone hot spot works in a pinch and is a decent solution for occasional use. However, built in cellular has two distinct advantages, which is that it’s always automatic, with no need to activate the hot spot, and that it doesn’t kill your iPhone battery. Battery life of an iPhone in actively used hot spot mode absolutely horrid, which can be a huge problem when travelling. The big disadvantage of course is cost. Before Covid when I sometimes travelled, I was going to get a cellular enabled iPad Pro when I upgraded from my iPP 10.5. However, I’ve since changed jobs and mostly work from home so that no longer is a priority. Having one cellular enabled iPad in the household is sufficient. My wife has one, which we use on the train etc.

PS. When I travelled, I didn’t visit the Arctic Tundra or the Sahara desert or the top of Mount Everest. I went from city to city to city. As for the train, the route we travel is the Montreal / Toronto corridor, which has reasonable coverage for almost its entire length.

Yeah, essentially “I DON’T LIKE IPADS, CHANGE MY VIEW!”

It is less bulk without the keyboard but since my initially question is about ipad with a keyboard sounds like the same amount of bulk.
Read my answer again: I wrote that you can separate iPad and Keyboard to temporarily have less weight/bulk (e.g. when away from the desk) and later attach them again for further/easier processing. This is not possible with a MacBook.

Well, it's still better in that it's flexible. You can detach that keyboard at any point. It's also "better" (arguably) in that it offers touch, even though that is indeed an uncomfortable position.

If the vast majority of your use doesn't involve either touch or drawing, then indeed a MacBook is better.

I am not moving the goal post, there is a mis understanding. I was not arguing ipad vs macbook (I own both for a reason too). I was talking when you put an ipad with a keyboard on a desk and a macbook next to it on a desk, how is the ipad better?

You are correct about the cellular aspect though, yes if a constant internet connection is needed YES the iPad is better I will give you that. Yes and I did mean using the iphone for a short while (2-3 hours) on a bus trip for example, but you are correct keeping the hotspot constantly on is not the better way albeit I have to tell you that I have seen people carrying a wifi-hotspot with them as their sole internet connection on the go. I do not know if you knew these do exist .

As for the cell coverage, exaggerations aside, let me give you some real life examples. In a 5 star hotel on T-Mobile network in Las Vegas one room had coverage the other did not. On a road trip between sand diego and Las Vegas IIRC internet connection dropped from one area to the other. In a restaurant in a populated area surrounded with shops i had 0 cell coverage. Just some real life examples, you do not have to be in the north pole to lose internet connection.

hmmm... yes it is more flexible. It can work with/without keyboard, has touch interface, has a back camera. I am guessing the majority do not draw and use keyboard and mouse for their work. When you go to big corporate or bank I do not see them holding stylus and tapping their screens, not even regular folks in a local starbucks.

yes I do agree if your work line has to do more with touching the screen and moving around from one area to another, indeed the iPad would be the better choice but if you need capable software I think MacOS wins everytime or at least most of the time.

You can still draw on it? ?
Every single thing that people have said here about where iPad is better than a MacBook Pro still applies. And I also think you are moving goalposts.

Cellphone reception shure do sucks where you live

You do realise working in a big corporate bank is not the only proffesion in the world, right?

I also haven’t seen anybody claim here that the iPad is the best device for every single person in the world every time. Instead the claim is that it’s a superior device in many occasions and use cases

It sure feels as if your question really is “is iPad better than a MacBook Pro, for a person that doesn’t need or want any of the iPad specific features, or in fact any feature where iPad is better. - Is it still better ?”

Regarding hotspot from the iPhone:

I am currently on the train from Toronto to Montreal. Fortunately, this train has working electrical plugs - Yay! So, I have plugged in my iPhone to power, with a 10 Watt (not 5 Watt) charger.

I’m traveling with my kids this time. My son‘s iPad is tethered to my iPhone, and he is accessing the net. Because of the power drain from tethering, I’m barely gaining any charge, but the good news is I’m not losing charge. Without the power source, it would be a major problem, since the iPhone eats thru the battery quickly while tethering.

I didn’t bother bringing my MacBook on this trip. I’m typing this on my iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard. I‘m watching some downloaded Netflix content too from this iPad Pro. That would be impossible on the MacBook, since Netflix does not allow downloads on macOS.

BTW, the train has free WiFi, but it’s pretty much useless. I don’t know why they even bother advertising this feature, since it is so crappy.

I too would like if my iPad can cover my laptop AND tablet wants, thats why so many people are asking to put MacOS in an iPad. Yes, the potential is strong.

I remember the run-up to the release of the original iPad (RIP SPJ), I was all about a DVD case sized iPad, something that would be the ubiquitous data device from ST:TNG...

As for the M2-series of SoCs; I will take a M2 in a keyboardMac & a M2 Pro in a Mac mini, thanks...! ;^p

You can draw on the iPad even with a keyboard attached.

For some people the iPad/keyboard is as good as a MacBook, for other people it isn't. I know you want to artificially limit the iPad by saying don't do that, but the iPad can be removed from the keyboard making it far more versatile.

Exactly. The people who have to have the full MacOS will never accept any argument beyond "iPads are worse". Meanwhile everyone else is happily using their iPad.
Hey there my iPad friends!:) Going on 5 months of iPad only use for my Real Estate work and it just keeps getting better. I am just a excited and having just as much fun as the first day. Just when I thought I know everything about iPad and iPadOS a new article, YouTube video, or forum post comes along with even more new stuff I didn't know yet. Anxiously awaiting to see what iPadOS 16 brings us.

I do know quite a few people that don't want to, or have no interest in taking the time to find out what the iPad can really do. Some are intimidated at the thought of using a new operating system, some are happy with what they have always used and just don't want to learn a new OS, and some are just perfectly fine with the iPad being their media consumption device. These are all ok, but it doesn't change the fact that the iPad is a very capable device that has an OS that has some more evolving to do but can already replace a laptop for a large minority of people as it stands.

iPadOS is not a lesser OS. It is a new modern OS made for the modern Tablet Computer. All OS's need to keep evolving and being developed, including iPadOS. One OS is not necessarily better than another OS, just different to fit and be used on the device it is developed for. All OS's do have one thing in common though. All hardware would be nothing more than paper weights without the OS that operates it.

And as I said above.... As iPadOS evolves, what is now a minority will keep growing and I believe will be able to become the majority. I like how you kind of gaslight it. It works for you, great. It doesn't work for others...tell them they're intimidated. Wow.

No gaslighting at all. Read the context. Don't just pick and choose. As I said, for whatever reason people don't use their iPads for more than they do...It is all ok. Read some of my past posts before you comment like you know me. I use what works best for me. You use what works best for you. Because, the best device to use is the one that works best for us. Always been my motto. I use both Apple and Microsoft, so I live in the best of both tech worlds. When I said that some people are intimidated by new things, it is simply because they are. I have been, many have been. Just a fact of life. Especially the older you get. No gaslighting or hidden agenda. Just go read some of my past stuff before making baseless comments about my perceived intentions.;)

it is more versatile, but software capability wise its not. I have yet to see an iOS software that is more capable-or equally- than MacOS(or any full fledged desktop OS). I use iPad but when I need to get work done I always reach for my laptop. The least of iPadOS incapabilities for example you can't run 3rd party browsers with plugins meanwhile I have FF on MacOS running ublock origin, Enpass, cookie auto-delete, and firefox containers.

There is a sweet point where the iPadOS apps are just good enough for your specific needs at which point I would say yes its a better option for you.
