What value brings the new “buttons” to the users?.
What problems/difficulties do they bring to the users?.
For me the balance is negative. I prefer 10000 times a simple, reliable mute switch over a software solution that requires my full attention to activate vs the “no need to think” convenience of the switch.
But since Apple Has run out of good ideas or the capability to listen to people with good ideas, then, we will have this “improvement”.

What’s it going to take for Apple to bring back this volume button design? I miss simpler times!

I actually much prefer the longer pill-shaped buttons we have today. These felt harder to press accurately since they were smaller.

How about bringing back 3D Touch with the Haptic Buttons?

Not sure how widely used 3D touch was. I found it finicky but maybe that was just my particular phone or me in general not figuring out how to use it right 😛.

I'm guessing the cost and retail increase to bring it back would be fairly unwelcome considering how expensive smartphones have gotten and current inflation won't help either.

Still don’t see the problem this is fixing. Is it introducing some new feature set?
Apple's intentions are to eventually have an iPhone with no ports or physical buttons at all, in a totally sealed and glued up slab of glass and aluminium.

That was my favorite iPhone Volume Up/Down design to date. Easier to accurately detect, by touch, the different buttons upon which my finger was resting. Why? The larger space between the round buttons made all the difference. The current space between buttons is so minuscule that, at times, the two buttons can feel like one long button.
Said another way... I've had more volume misfires since they moved to the longer/closer buttons. Of course YMMV.
