For $500 less and you mainly are missing some GPU cores that many people have no use for. If they do an M2 Pro in the Mini, no reason they couldn’t bring in some more ports, like the Mini traditionally has.
Be sure to tag me back when they come out with the M2 Pro with more ports in that price range.
Running with your thinking, many of those people have no use for more ports. But you can add more ports.
You can't increase the memory speed after the fact, nor can you get very close to the internal storage speed (assuming you need it) without a more expensive thunderbolt hub.

It was just math, obviously, if you have no need for the machine with those specs, you shouldn't buy it.
For $1499, I'd like it to last a bit longer and would probably throw a little more at it. (I'd prefer $2199 with a 1TB drive in the studio).

If you scroll back earlier in the thread the point was comparing the models, originally an unfair comparison as my original reply to someone who was comparing a $799 M1 8/256 with a $1999 32/512 Studio and implying there were quite similar, at $1499, they're only similar in storage and RAM. If you have a lot of money to spend $1499, invest a little more.

When comparing the price difference, I pointed out:
  • Don't forget you've got a Studio with 10/24/16 cores while the Mini has 8/8/16 cores.
  • and it doesn't have all the ports the studio has,
  • nor does it have a Max chip with 4 times the memory bandwidth (that's actually M1 Max vs. M2 [400 vs. 100]).
That's a lot more for something that you've already invested heavily in, and yes, you were correct for 33% more. But you're paying for the lowest Mini they have and just upgrading memory and storage, it's still the low-end model, just with more storage/RAM.
If you look at that post, you'll see I upvoted the post saying "that $1499 price point is exactly where people are thinking a Mac mini with M2 Pro would land."

The argument was that there is no room in the lineup for an M2 Pro powered Mac Mini. That's obviously false. Telling people to spend $500 more is not telling them to spend "a little" more.
