Apple will update its MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac lines with its latest M4 chip later this year, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said Apple is preparing to upgrade every Mac to the new Apple silicon processor generation. Following the launch of the M4 iPad Pro in May, Apple will continue the M4 transition with the above mentioned Macs, and complete it with updates for the MacBook Air, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio in 2025.

One interesting tidbit from Gurman's latest report is that while the M4 overhaul is mostly focused on making Apple's machines more powerful – with the M4 processor's enhanced neural engine for handling AI tasks a standout upgrade – there is "at least one Mac model that will get more dramatic changes."

Apple has said the ultra-thin 2024 iPad Pro serves as a model for its upcoming design philosophy, with the company planning to offer "the thinnest and lightest products" in each category across the tech industry. Gurman previously reported that Apple is working on a thinner version of the MacBook Pro.

Whether these dramatic changes Gurman foresees relate to the design of Apple's Macs or the addition of a rumored new feature such as Face ID is unknown at this point. "Stay tuned," Gurman added.

It is absolutely ridiculous that there will be M4 Max MBPs while the Studio and Pro are still on M2.

The higher-end M3 Max already had nearly the same performance as the M2 Ultra in some areas, the M4 Max is likely to beat it out across the board.
too expensive the N3B for Mac studio and mac pro that sells a fraction compared to their laptop line-up
But good to hear the M4 Max and Ultra will come to mac studio/pro

A welcomed changed. I like everything about my M1 Pro 16" MBP except how heavy and thick it is.

I feel like Apple swung too much into the other side. I don't want them to make it really thin and sacrifice too much battery life or quietness. But I'd like them to have a better balance in the next generation.

Wonder why M4 Macbook Airs are delayed to 2025.
It’s possible the Air might skip the M4 altogether and go straight to the M5. Seems like Apple has new M chips ready before new machines.

That and wasn't the M3 MBA just released a few months ago? The best way to upset your customers is to update it again the same year. Don’t need another iPad 3rd gen situation.

I’m lined up for an M4 Pro Mac Mini as soon as they come out, so it’s good to hear that may happen this year (although it’s also possible they’ll hold off the Pro version until next year).

Currently using a 6-core Intel Mini from shortly before the transition, which is less fun than using a few-year-old, decently-specc’d computer should be.

I hope they change the enclosure design of the Mini. It is long overdue since there aren't a whole lot of parts inside and the parts that are in there are rather small. I have owned several Mini's and each one has had issues with BT dropping and reconnecting. I know i'm not alone. So hopefully they can make the Mini smaller and fix the BT issues.

Of Apple’s Mac sales, the Mac Pro makes up 2% of sales and the Mac Studio makes up 1% of sales. It just isn’t worthwhile for them to update them all that often. Even if they were running variants of the M4 while the MBP’s run M3 variants, the MBP’s would still outsell them by about 20-1.

It's time to upgrade. My 2018 Mac Mini has served me well. I'll probably snag the MBP - especially if they make it thinner. However, instead of taking out a small mortgage for it, I might choose a new Mini.

Isn’t the Intel Mini from 2018?

A 6 year old machine is bound to show its age.

What's really needed is a MacBook Air with a not-gimped port setup, adding at least SD Card and HDMI for full real world compatibility.
Unlikely on the SD Card and HDMI ports. Those are professional ports while the Air is a low-end consumer model aimed at students and people buying their first Mac for media consumption and web browsing and maybe some light work. We might get more Thunderbolt ports since the base M4 chip has four Thunderbolt controllers which is two more than the M1-M3 had.

People who want HDMI and SD Card slot will be encouraged to buy the base M4 MacBook Pro when it comes out. Professionals who tend to run Microsoft Office, Photoshop Elements, and iMovie and need to give presentations in conference rooms, such as secretaries and HR people and corporate executives, are why the base MBP exists. For most people who buy the Air, those ports would be wasted.

By putting those ports on the Air, the distinction between the Air and the base Pro would vanish and they’d discontinue the base MBP due to redundancy, leaving a gigantic $700-$900 price gap between the Air and the M4 Pro MBP, something Apple would never do.

When they introduce the base M4 MBP, that’ll be a big sign towards what the Air configurations will be like. If that comes with 12GB of RAM and 3-4 Thunderbolt ports, that’ll be a solid indication that the Airs will as well.
