The source of “slowing down production” posts are usually analysts that value getting folks to post their URL and getting clicks as, when Apple’s quarterly reports come out, there’s usually stark differences between “what happened” and “slowing production”. And, it doesn’t matter if few upgrade, you may not be aware of this, but there’s MORE people that don’t own ANY iPad than own M4 iPads. It’s true. Count up every iPad that has been sold since it’s introduced, there’s still MORE people that don’t own ANY iPad, than that!

Focusing on folks that are upgrading is not what Apple’s doing. Sure, they’re happy to get that additional money, but they’re selling new devices to folks new to the whole world of iPad and providing those folks with the best tech they have available at the time.
To be honest coming from an M2 IPad Pro, the biggest selling point for the M4 for me was the weight, I love it now considering it’s “air” light. Before my M2 with the keyboard was 3 lbs, where as the m4 with the keyboard it’s 1.5lbs. It’s the little things, but that stark difference in change is what pushed it for me in that sense.

Hopefully, the new standard iPad Pros get 16 RAM like the Macs. Procreate, Nomad, and even Shapr3D will not even open some 3D models if they are too large or complex and crash from lack of memory, which shouldn't happen on a Pro model. The 1tb and 2tb models are far too expensive to get just for the extra RAM. The Pro models should be able to handle these programs with no issues.
I have been holding off buying a new iPad Pro because of this.
I was expecting the base iPad Pro M4 models to have increased RAM, but didn't happen, now even iPhone 16e comes with 8GB RAM.
An iPad Pro definitely needs more RAM than a "budget" iPhone, especially if you don't upgrade often and want something that is somewhat future proof.
I'm with you on this, the iPad Pro has gotten already expensive enough, don't feel like getting the 1TB version just for the extra RAM. And when the base M4 model with 8GB won't get certain iOS features (or they will drop support) because lack of RAM, the same will happen with the 16GB model, just because Apple is Apple, they will pretend like the 16GB model didn't exist.
That's why it's important for the base model to get more RAM.

The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to get 12GB RAM, so it makes sense for M5 iPad Pro to have at least 12GB, although 16GB would be even better.

I guess M4 was the switch to OLED and M5 will be the spec bump.

Macs need more RAM than iPads because macOS is less aggressive than iPadOS about killing background apps, and Mac users generally also expect to run more stuff at a time.

That said, it might be time for Apple to offer RAM as its own BTO option on iPads.

Yep, 12GB would help a lot. I mean it's a PRO model meant for Pro work. Yet I still think 16GB should be standard for the base iPad Pro models. Especially since people will instinctively assume that they will be able to use the stylus for graphics work without problems.

So the option will be for the model 17s to get 12GB or memory but the following year we will find 16GB will be necessary for the currently vaporware AI. All prior lower memory devices would thus be limited in the AI arena if anyone even cares.
