Apple is planning to launch its first Macs with the M4 series of chips "very soon," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In a social media post today, Gurman said these Macs will include new MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini models specifically. He continues to expect the next Mac mini to feature a "revamped" design, in line with his previous reporting that said the new model will be nearly as small as an Apple TV and gain two front-facing USB-C ports.

No major design changes are rumored for the next MacBook Pro and iMac models, but the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro is expected to gain an additional Thunderbolt port compared to the current model, based on alleged leaks earlier this month.

It's not entirely clear if Apple plans to hold an online event this month, like its "Scary Fast" event on October 30 last year, or if the new Macs will be announced with Apple Newsroom press releases only like the iPad mini 7. If there is an event this month, Apple would likely invite the media to watch it online very soon. Apple sent out invites for the October 30 event last year on October 24, six days in advance.

Gurman said the new Macs will be accompanied by unspecified "USB-C accessories." MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris recently discovered code references to new versions of the Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard, and these accessories will likely switch from Lightning to USB-C for charging alongside the new iMac. In the EU, a regulation requiring USB-C as a common charging port goes into effect later this year.

Here is everything that Apple is likely to announce:

  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with the standard M4 chip
  • 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and M4 Max chip options
  • iMac with the standard M4 chip
  • A redesigned, smaller Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro chip options
  • Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard accessories with USB-C ports
Update: In a follow-up post, Gurman said that Apple is inviting the media and content creators to a hands-on experience in Los Angeles next Wednesday, and he believes this means the new Macs would need to be announced before then.

Really hope they bump the base specs this time around. 8gb/256 just isn’t good enough at the prices they are asking.

I’ve had to buy a used ThinkPad L13 16/512 to get me by, as a specced-up M3 with 16/512 is silly money.

It's very strange that they offer Mac Minis with Pro chips, but not iMacs. The only 2 reasons I can think of are that they are planning an iMac Pro or they made the iMac so thin, the Pro chip would run too hot.
No way is the Pro chip too hot they run it in the MacBook Pro with a small fan and they can do the same in iMac. Maybe the current chin is a little too small for the Pro chip plus fan. I surely hope Apple is working to address this hole in their product lineup of a larger sized iMac that will support the Pro and Max chips I am a buyer.

Hopefully the former.
Plus, I can't imagine the iMac getting any thinner and there's space (unlike a laptop), for heat dissipation.

I'm ready
...to probably be underwhelmed

Basically everything they do now seems to be some level of disappointing
As news it may be underwhelming, but for those of us who are ready to upgrade and buy, this is delightful. Even if "underwhelming" you can start at the top of release cycle and get maximum value over the life of the product.

Assuming the Mac mini gets a redesign, I think a short video like last year may be warranted. We either get a press release tomorrow morning announcing the new Macs, or announcing the event to announce the new Macs.

This is basically what Apple counts on now

People barely even evaluate if the offering is good/great or a sensible value

They just "buy it" (whatever Apple "it" happens to be)

The customer base appears fully captured and Tim has really leaned in to "extracting value" at this point.

"No major design changes for MacBook and iMac", "revamped mini", it's going to be press releases for MacBook and iMac and a video presentation release for the new mini.

From my perspective, I don't see the need for an iMac. My preference for a small system is, a nice monitor or two and a Mini. For my main system, it is a Studio Ultra and three screens. I hate the idea of tossing out a perfectly good monitor when the computer behind it can no longer keep up.

agreed

it made a lot of sense when target display was a thing.
I do love the iMac though. It's a great computer

I actually wish apple made the 4.5 K display in 24" for the Mac Mini.
I find the current 5 K 27" studio display model too expensive for what it is

What makes sense to me: Apple won't step on the iPad Mini 7 launch tomorrow by announcing the new Macs today or tomorrow, but will announce them Thursday for pre-order beginning Friday and availability starting Friday, November 1st.
