Apple will not refresh the Mac Studio and Mac Pro with next-generation high-end chips until the middle of 2025, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that Apple's current schedule does not include the launch of new Mac Studio and Mac Pro models until the middle of next year. Apple last updated the Mac Studio and Mac Pro with M2-series chips at WWDC in 2023, meaning that they could go around 24 months without an update, even though the iPad Pro now contains the M4 chip.

All other Macs with the exception of the MacBook Air should be available with M4-series chips by the end of 2024, but Gurman does not anticipate any new models being unveiled at WWDC in June, making 2022 and 2023 exceptions for recent mid-year Mac releases.

I call BS on this. They’ve literally just released M4 - how are they going to explain updating their laptops but not the desktops? They sell more, yes, but is it any wonder if they go and do stupid moves like this?

He means it will be announced in October 2024 but because they will sell like hotcakes your delivery will arrive in 2025.

I think he is wrong this time. MacBook Air chip will keep 1 previous generation chip and it makes sense. Direct jump to M4 is perfect for differentiate pro lineup. iMac and MacBook Air stay on M3 for now, Pro machines gets M4 Pro and Max. Mac mini could offer a entry level with M3 and mid level with M4. Maybe pro chip are not ready yet ok but I don’t think we will see Air with 4 while Max Studio stays on M2 Max/Ultra

Kinda makes sense.
I expect the M4 coming to the mac mini/imac this Autumn, with the Pro/Max variants ready by early 2025.
I think we'll see the M4 Ultra by May 2025.

While not great news, the Mac doesn’t just need new chips, there are other technologies the Mac can benefit from such as WiFi 7, Thunderbolt 5, OLED, Face ID and cellular (laptops). The Studio Display needs 120hz (likely won’t happen until Thunderbolt 5) and either mini-LED or OLED.

The M4 series of chips is will come to Mac Studio and Mac Pro once the rollout is complete. It is foolish that the base Mac Studio does not have the M3 Max in it since that chip does in fact exist.

If what Mark says is true, and we’re not getting studios until 2025, I suspect it’s because they will probably use N3P for the Max and Ultra variants of M4. While using the cheaper N3E for the M4 and M4 Pro, and putting them into MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.

But it’s still a bit weird. That would make the M4 generation longer than expected, and a good deal for those who value device longevity.

More and more reasons to jump to the M4 SoC generation.

Maybe the Mac Studio is such a powerful machine that really don’t need annual, or even biannual refreshes. An M2 Ultra is still quite competitive, especially regarding GPU performance, compared to the new M3 or M4.

The M4 Ultra, even in mid 2025, is going to be a huge jump in raw performance.

So basically, M3 Ultra will never exist.
This is why the M3 Max didn't have the connector.
For what they’re designed for, they’re still the fastest Macs Apple makes. For folks that don’t need a system to be mobile and that requires “all the cores with all the RAM”, there’s nothing that Apple ships that comes close.

There will be folks, of course, not in the market for a Mac Pro, don’t own a Mac Pro and won’t buy a Mac Pro for any price that will still demand what the Mac Pro specs should be, though. That’ll never change :)
