Gurman: No New Mac Studio and Mac Pro Until Mid-2025

You think that Apple is not already a generation ahead when the release something or are they just doing things on the fly?
These things are developed years in advance of course but the timing is also already planned long before release. If the plan was to release in say mid 2025, it’s not as if they have tens of thousands of units sitting in warehouses in mid 2024, waiting for Apple marketing to decide when to release them. They wouldn’t even begin volume production of them until Q1 2025, with the actual chips a couple of months before that.

I decided at the beginning of this year to buy a new mac for the first time in about 10 years. Unfortunately now I will either be buying used, or delaying the purchase for more than a year after the decision. If Apple wanted these to sell better, they could stand to update them more frequently.

If you are using your computer for 10 years (congratulations btw) then buying a “new” computer model that was just released 1 year ago should not be a major concern.

This would be a day one buy for me (from my company). It would drastically improve my workflow if I had a capable (Mac OS) portable touch screen device for rendering.

You make a wrong assumption. I said buy a new mac. I bought a used mac about 2.5 years ago. You also wrongly assume I don’t have a use for the upgraded hardware, I actually do. Please think before you post.

All I want is an M4 Pro Mac Mini, with more RAM available. At least 48gb, but preferably 64gb. I don't need the additional GPU cores in the M Max chips, but the smaller Mac Mini size is great (as long as it stays silent).

It would be so strange to see half the line on M4 and half the line still stuck on M2... Surely Apple just needs to get their **** together and refresh every Mac?

Another article states next gen chips will debut in 2025. This is getting so ridiculous. Studio and Pro will be on M2 while Apple debuts M5?

That assessment is based solely off Gurman predictions. In 2023 he was still predicting no M2 Studio, and no WWDC release for Mac Pro or Mac Studio as late as the end of April. No really accurate information emerged until just days before the new machines were announced (at WWDC, against all his previous predictions). I take his current prediction (as of May 8) that a new Mac Studio and M4 Mac Pro won't release until the second half of 2025 and use by-then outdated chips with a grain of salt.

Here's MacRumors on April 21, 2023:
Speaking on the latest episode of The MacRumors Show, Gurman explained that while he still expects the new Mac Pro to launch this year, it is unlikely to emerge at WWDC in June. This is a significant delay over when the machine was originally expected to launch.
He added that the next-generation Mac Studio will likely not contain M2-series chips, with Apple postponing a refresh of the device until the M3 generation to avoid cannibalizing the new Mac Pro.

It wasn't until just 9 days before WWDC 2023 when Gurman published, "I'm expecting new Macs at WWDC."

Five days out from WWDC 2023 when he said:
NEW: Apple is testing two new Mac desktops, dubbed Mac 14,13 and Mac 14,14, with M2 Ultra and M2 Max chips. This comes ahead of WWDC where Macs will be featured and a plan to start accepting Mac Studio trade-ins on Monday. Full story coming soon.

And three days out from WWDC 2023 when MacRumors wrote:
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has confirmed that Apple is nearing the introduction of what appears to be a refreshed Mac Studio model, indicating that it could be announced at WWDC next week.

On Twitter, Gurman explained that the new Mac in question is codenamed "J475." The current Mac Studio is codenamed "J375," suggesting that the new machine is indeed a next-generation Mac Studio model.

Here's what he's said so far on M4 releases.
April 11, 2024:
NEW: Apple nears production of first M4 chips with AI upgrades and plans to bring the new chips to all of its Macs, including new MacBook Pros and Airs, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, Mac mini and iMac across the end of this year and 2025.
For just "nearing" production of M4 in mid-April, Apple got those chips produced and in devices pretty fast. M4 iPads were announced less than a month later.

April 23, 2024:
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Mac Studio with M4 chip is expected to be released around mid-2025, which would suggest a possible introduction at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference.

May 8, 2024:
For those asking, here's the M4 Mac roadmap. Expect Mac minis, iMacs and MacBook Pros later this year, MacBook Air in the spring; Mac Studio and Pro second half of 2025.

Who knows what Apple's actual release schedule will really be, but I'm skeptical that it's going to be the latter half of next year before Apple releases M4 Studios and possibly Pros, just in time to eclipse M4 Ultra with M5 Max. I'd treat the speculation as a "worst case" scenario.

Any standards configs are still immediately available. But my custom Mac Studio order has been sitting in limbo for over a week, and I just received an email stating arrival date is now pushed to at least June 11th. Any custom config you try to make, is also pushed out past the keynote. Could be nothing, but hmmmmmmm.

I noticed that too when checking availability. Any custom additions pushes after WWDC. This included the MacBook Air.

I think he is wrong this time. MacBook Air chip will keep 1 previous generation chip and it makes sense. Direct jump to M4 is perfect for differentiate pro lineup. iMac and MacBook Air stay on M3 for now, Pro machines gets M4 Pro and Max. Mac mini could offer a entry level with M3 and mid level with M4. Maybe pro chip are not ready yet ok but I don’t think we will see Air with 4 while Max Studio stays on M2 Max/Ultra
M4 is cheaper and safer than M3, no reason to do what you are proposing

I wound up buying a used Mac Pro. I’m not paying new prices on year-old hardware! I’m pretty sure the last new mac I purchased was in 2011. I saved a LOT of money.

I really hope the people that tally sales numbers don’t think we don’t want powerful hardware because we don’t buy it from them directly.

When I run into a need to upgrade hardware it never lines up with their product cycles. Maybe one day it will but it hasn’t yet.

A big part of this is how long the machine will go before it becomes obsolete and won’t run whatever latest software. If I’m going to pay $4500 I want it to have the latest hardware, not hardware already a year into its lifespan
