Does TurboTax still automatically install crapware?

That's the reason I dumped them five years ago and switched to H&R Block - which I've had no issues with.

Until today.

Software glitch to delay 600,000 U.S. tax refunds - IRS

WASHINGTON | Wed Mar 13, 2013 4:37pm EDT

(Reuters) - Tax refunds for about 600,000 taxpayers claiming an education credit will be delayed, the Internal Revenue Service said on Wednesday, citing a software glitch at some tax-preparation companies, including industry leader H&R Block Inc.

Refunds may be delayed four to six weeks from mid-February, likely not showing up until late March, the IRS said.

The agency is working with tax-preparation businesses to deliver the refunds, said IRS spokeswoman Michelle Eldridge.

An H&R Block spokesman said the software problem had been fixed and the company was working with the IRS.

Two companies that provide online tax preparation software, Intuit Inc and Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc, said their programs were not affected and their education credit customers are not experiencing delays.

Various delays have hampered the tax season this year, slowing the arrival of refunds.

In February, some taxpayers who claimed earned income tax credits were hit by refund delays, the IRS said.

On Tuesday, a Wal-Mart Stores Inc executive said shoppers had cashed about $2.7 billion in tax refund checks at its U.S. stores so far this year. At this point last year, that amount was about $4 billion.

The IRS delayed the start of the tax filing season by eight days, to January 30, due to the enactment of tax law changes made to resolve the "fiscal cliff."

H&R Block has issued a statement acknowledging this problem as well.

Personally, I've been using Turbotax for the last 5 year and prefer it over H&R Block and TaxAct because of the interface and because all my info is stored there.

I was a little upset when I realized that the Business version of TurboTax requires Windows, but that's easily fixed with Parallels.

Granted, there are cheaper options that turbotax, but I found a couple turbotax discounts that looked interesting here: http://www.financialsprout.com/best-turbotax-discount-codes-and-coupons/

I used H&R Block for many years, then a few years back my credit union offered turbo tax for free..I like the fact that at H&R Block I can drop my stuff off come back a few days later sign it and they e-file it. I like turbo tax because I can do my taxes when ever I want.. I haven't noticed any difference in refund/pay

I used to use Turbo Tax every year, and then I had some 1099 forms and some different deductions and decided to find an actual tax office. Found someone on Yelp that got glowing reviews, and honestly it's one of the best changes I've ever made.

It costs $85 total - to file both federal and state, I get to sit with someone that knows what they're doing and how to maximize my refund, and I get perfectly documented paperwork both in hard copy and electronically. I was paying ~ $30 or so IIRC with Turbo Tax, so it's not a monumental increase.

I always thought having a tax person would be really expensive, but it's not. Well worth it to me and at a lower cost than I ever expected.

Oh, I didn't mean software errors - by crapware I mean AOL, Yahoo toolbars and associated garbage/unwanted stuff that was installed by TurboTax without asking permission or giving any option to avoid it.

I won't have any issues with H&R - barely started on my return.

On the Mac, TurboTax doesn't install crapware. Not sure about PCs.

This.^^ The costs for tax preparation are deductible. :)
In the U.S. it falls under "Miscellaneous Deductions", making it subject to a threshold of 2% of your adjusted gross income. Unreimbursed employee expenses fall into the same category. So tax software or even professional help may not get you a deduction unless you have loads of miscellaneous deductions relative to your income.

I've never used H&R Block, but I have used TurboTax for the past two returns. The software works very well and holds my hand tightly.

My mother, who used H&R Block for many years, recently switched over to TurboTax, if that means anything.
