The same as a normal flu, except it might get worse. (ya, that was real descriptive )

edit: no one "holy crapped" when i said my cousin had it :(

Your cousin has it?! :( Missed that post . . .

I think it just starts out like normal flu and then it gets worse. I read some quote somewhere from someone who's being treated for it who said it was worse than any flu they've ever had.

Recent developments in the analysis of the H1N1 swine influenza virus have shown that the lethal viral strain does not combine genes from humans, birds and pigs, as first thought, but that it’s rather made up of a combination of two swine flu strains, which, brought together, are deadly to us.

“This is what we call a reassortment between two currently circulating pig flu viruses. Why it’s emerged in humans is anyone’s guess. It hasn’t been seen before in pigs, as far as I know,” University of Edinburgh Viral Geneticist Andrew Rambaut, who is involved in the H1N1 investigation efforts, explained.

His conclusions were echoed by Eddie Holmes, a virus evolution specialist at the University of Pennsylvania, and Steven Salzberg, a University of Maryland bioinformaticist. Both have looked at the CDC-provided sequences. The CDC could not be reached for comment.

It doesn't appear to be a combination of human, bird, and pig. But not sure if the CDC has confirmed this. Medically it may not matter, but it could help determine how and where it originally began.

I read this, and still can't believe it.

TORONTO -- Three young Port Perry women who are Ontario's first confirmed cases of swine flu returned from Cancun on Friday with symptoms but spent the weekend at the local casino and visiting friends because their local hospital never advised them to stay home.

And even after 21-year-old Justine Stevenson was informed on Tuesday afternoon that she has the virus, no one has told her mom to close her home daycare business.

So incredibly, Barb Stevenson is still taking care of three children while her daughter with swine flu remains upstairs in her room.

"The daycare kids have already been exposed,"...

While this description of their illness was somewhat encouraging, there was a severe misstep in handling pre-confirmed cases.
"It wasn't that bad," Justine said. "It was one day of having a fever and being short of breath. The regular flu is worse."

Hey guys- what are the symptoms? I haven't been able to find anything on that. I have a friend who was home with 102 degree temp yesterday and is still home today.

From PandemicFlu.gov

The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

Here's a patient report on the BBC:

Tansy Huws said:
I have been living in Mexico for only three weeks. The symptoms started last Sunday when I got home. From one minute to the next I got nauseous and had very high fever. I just couldn't get out of bed during the whole week. [...] I think swine flu is very different from a normal flu because I just couldn't get out of bed.

Where are the articles from?

Confirmed cases in Maryland and a probable case in my county have been reported tonight! Swine flu has come to my county...

As of now I'm not really worried about it however. The US strain/cases seem relatively mild and the outbreak it pretty limited so far. I'm sure it will increase dramatically fairly soon, but for now I'll just try to be more cautious.

Might it be a good thing that it's happening now, when the symptoms seem to be relatively mild and there are relatively very few deaths occurring? The virus will sweep through, do whatever damage it does, and then we'll all have an immunity to it.

They talk about how it's spreading and it's a pandemic, but it really doesn't seem to be worse than the "regular" flu that always goes around.

If this pass is "mild", and exposure reduces susceptibility to future strains, then I wonder if it's a good thing to catch it now, rather than when it comes back as "medium" or "piquant".

That's exactly what I was thinking about. It'd be interesting to see if that was true. It's likely however you'd only have partial immunity because if it got more severe it would have had to mutate.

Well today they closed a high school in my county (Montgomery County, MD) that's only a couple of miles from my school over a probable case. It's interesting how quickly it's spreading in my county as the case seems unrelated from the case that was first reported last night.

Wow, really? My dad lives there and my aunt works at several schools in the district. MCPS is a huge district, at least their on top of it.
