its crazy how someone can be so smart to hack or phish information and hijack a computer....yet walk up to a bank machine that has video surveillance and withdraw the money they stole....

This title is totally misleading. They were not hackers. This is what it should read.

No. Australia has no corporal punishment in the form of death. And I hope it stays like this here for ever. I am very much against the death penalty.
Call me confused. They were arrested withdrawing the money they stole? How did the cops know that? Don't people walk up to cash machines and get money all the time? If they blackmailed someone in AU and they were in RU, then the money had to be wired to them or something.
So what did the cops key in on? Doesn't sound right.

The money was probably wired into an account opened with fake credentials. The cops got records of cash withdrawals from that account, checked the matching CCTV and recognised the perp from similar offences. Easy.

Anyway, this is why you should always look up the address of an email from a company that's linked to your credit card.

Phishing really has nothing to do with what platform you use. Usually it is a fake email with a link that takes you to a website. People then enter in all their personal information.
After the eBay leak I was getting a new email every day from "Citi", "Chase", "Amazon" and some others.

Totally the user's fault. They were dumb enough to be suckered into buying an account for the content.

The buying of the account is but one method as explained by the article.
Just cause people get caught out , does not make them plain stupid. The average user has quiet a low level of street smarts when it comes to hackers.

I am so sick of you people who say its the users fault for being stupid. Not everyone sits around all day reading forums and generally dorking it up, or have their brilliant role playing 40 YO geniuses living in the basement who can apprise them of every security breach on the planet.
Some people just wanna send a few emails without having to have attended 20 years of IT schools to do it. Give it a break.

You don't have to sit on a message board all day to be technology literate. You just have to have some common sense. Phishing e-mails don't normally look official - They don't come from said PayPal address, nor do they use the same type of language that PayPal or any other company would professionally use. They tell people this ALL THE TIME, even in officially sent e-mails, even providing you a link to help you identify them.
No company can prevent this from happening. They can only give you advice to make sure you DON'T fall victim to it.
Thats the point - NOT EVERYONE is going to be technically literate. Not everyone is going to know to check every link, every email, every anything. So your grandmother should not have an iPhone so she can see pictures of her family sent to her because some crook in Russia doesn't want to get a job and would rather rip people off? Thats BS.

Not sure what you expect. Companies cannot be expect to control everything their users do. If they did most people would stop using said company.
It's up to us who know the risks and the solutions to talk to those within our reach what not to do and what to do, and not be upset if the ask us questions.
Thats exactly what I expect. My original point was that they should not call people idiots because they get taken by scammers. That like saying its the fault of college students who get shot just for being in class when some idiot shoots up the place. Anyway, I digress as not to change the topic.

Personally, as i always say now,, its bad, but it's the truth, which is, I'm glad people were affected because it will be the only way they will learn.
