Just looked at the HP instructions and it is more involved than the Dell and it seems that after each update you need to do a bunch of stuff, but it does have the larger screen.

Wow this is some good advice. But I'm surprised nobody has gone the "illegal/lock thread" route like on some other forums.

Anyhow I love apple and my mini with core duo and leopard 10.5.6. still runs decent. But even a macbook used on ebay are 500 and up. Nothing cheaper except first gens with a lot of issues and severly used.

So I went to costo today and got a acer aspire one for 350 + tax 10.1" screen with 160gb hd and xp home. Netbook not laptop. Just for travel. XP runs fine. And by the time it doesn't I'll save for a mac. But XP runs good enough for now. I'm even typing my reply on it now. Not slow or anything. Even youtube works fine. No lag or choppy.

But just out of curiosity if I had a hackingtosh. Obviously no warentee or anything from apple. But if somebody caught with one couldn't I get into trouble?

Anyhow there is one good deal if anyone is interested.

macbook core2duo $420. I just don't know how safe craiglist is.

As far as I'm aware, it isn't illegal, and you won't get in trouble if someone sees you with it.

But I thought apple was against installing osx on non macs, and eula says nothing about this either.

Lenovo ideapad is a nice compromise between the two. Everything's working except the wired ethernet. Plus, it has the nice ibm thinkpad looks and build quality.

I checked that out as well. It is kinda like the HP, because it needs a bunch of stuff installed all the time, and the ethernet doesn't work, though I'd be using wifi most of the time.

As long as nobody suggests illegal methods for obtaining Leopard, there is no reason to lock this thread. Although hackintoshes go against Apple's EULA, EULA's are not enforceable. Putting a sticker on your computer, however, doesn't make it Apple-labeled. ;)

Exactly, adding a sticker doesn't make it an apple. As for eula well we'll just see when I get a phone call from the jail with your "unenforcable" plea.

We have a whole thread here dedicated to OSx86. Its a legal gray area at the moment, but more on that later...

Hackintosh. No "g." :D
Apple doesnt like everyone installing OS X on non-apple computers becaue they make a ton of money on hardware sales. Because of this, apple put a clause in the EULA that says you can only install OS X on apple-labeled hardware (meaning branded by apple, you cant just slap an apple sticker on it). The problem with this is that Apple doesnt make the laws. PsyStar is having an ongoing court battle with Apple because PsyStar was selling hackintoshes. Theres a new German company, PearC (named after PearPC, the old PPC emulator for windows), who is selling their own hacks.
If Steve walks into the coffee shop and sees you running Leo on an HP he will probably throw a hissy fit, but he and his lawyers cant do anything to you; Apple doesnt make the laws.

Well apple makes osx and has the copyright. So if not them then who makes the laws.

Um, being a copyright holder doesn't give you the same power as the government.

The U.S. government makes laws.

EULAs are not laws and cannot be enforced as such.

So if I invent something cool I have no right to say how it should be used? If I make something isn't it my right to determine how I want it to be used.

Thats not accurate at all. I have been running OSx86 on my rig since 10.5.2 and i have yet to give it "constant attention." In fact, the only time i have to worry about it is when theres an update and the guys at IM usually have it all figured out by the time i check it out. Even then its only a few terminal commands, update, reboot, and done. Its not really difficult.

OSx86 depends strictly on your hardware. It either works or it doesnt. There are a few setups that might require a little more work to get going, but its not like it was in the Tiger days. When i install Leo on a computer i just pop in my iPC disc, install, run OSx86Tools and get all the drivers i need. It probably takes about 5 minutes longer than it would installing on a mac.

Like i said, it all depends on the hardware. The Dell XPS line seems to get alot of attention from the osx86 community and im pretty sure they work 100% with almost no work at all. Im not sure about anything else though. Look for something Intel based that doesnt have the GMA4500 chipset. The 4500 will NOT work and you will be stuck at 1024x768 forever.
That's all fine and such, but on some machines iPC doesn't work at all. And some machine require a lot more than just a little to get it to work, despite having supported hardware. Sure you can get lucky and have something that does everything out of the box, but it is most definitely not the rule.

Better be well prepared and luck out, than ill-prepared and get caught with your pants down.

PowerBooks aren't as expensive as I thought. I'd love a 17'', so maybe I'll save a bit more and get one in the summer...

Well apple makes osx and has the copyright. So if not them then who makes the laws.

If i buy a Leopard install disc and install it on my computer (via boot 1-2-3 or whatever) i have not broken any copyright law. I have broken the eula, which is not a law, just an agreement between myself and Apple that is only enforceable if the terms in the eula are laws to begin with. As much as they would like to think so, Apple does not have complete control over everything, that our governments job.

I've been looking on ebay and a 1.33-1.5 GHz PB isn't as expensive as I'd thought. It may be cheaper than Hackintoshing a Mini 9, though the Mini 9 would be more fun.

Don't forget that WWDC may have a netbook in store.

The PB has a disk drive, and IMO, the screen is easier to use than the widescreen on the lenovo or the wind (it's too narrow). The keyboard is luxurious. My dad, depression baby that he is (1st gen ;)) recently bought a 12" g4 1.07 ghz ibook with 768 megs of ram, and it is surprisingly usable to surf the net, etc.

He lucked out, and got his (with a cd reader and 30 gig hd) for $245!

I've hacked an msi wind and lenovo s10; but for me, the features of my 1.5ghz 12" pb wins, hands down.
