You'd be comparing apples to apples (pardon the pun) if you were hacking iphone software to run on a motorola phone. But you aren't.
Its the same depending on how you word it. You are hacking an ATT phone to run on Tmobile

You guys can keep trying to twist it around but its no different than hacking the iphone. Both are violating the eula, both are modifying an OS, and apple is possibly "losing" money with both since they get money from ATT contracts and they get money from mac sales. If you think both are wrong then fine, but try not to have double standards.

check out some youtube videos on hackintosh and they usually give information and links

My hackintosh is a lot faster than my macbook, I bought leopard (but didn't use it for the install) to try to stay as legal as possible. I know it's still illegal but as long as apple doesn't release a mini tower or upgrades the mac mini, I'm sticking with it.

It doesn't "just work" unless you're very lucky with your hardware, but after a day or so of tweaking an searching for drivers everything works very fast.

I had Tiger running on my Dell XPS 410 for six months. it took little amount of work to install it and get it going, but after that all my components worked great and i didn't have any problems. you just have to be careful with updates and wait until people release properly patched update then apply it.

As long as you get hardware that is compatible with OSX you should have no problems.

I ran this setup for 6 months, then ended up getting Mac Pro and now its my work horse.

In terms of pricing yes, Mac pros are decently priced as long as u don't get upgrades from apple. But what hackintosh allows you to do is have the ability to run OSX on a cheaper priced machine. Also this allows people to play around with Macs without shelling out money for it, since you can reuse your current setup.

I'm surprised this thread is still going.

Well, if you want to "experiment" with OS X, why not find a deal on a used Mac?

This place sells used G4's for under $200...

http://www.powermax.com/preowned_macs

Or, you can try saving an old mac from a landfill.

It's easier to get these real Macs up and running, than try to get it to run on a PC.

Heck, I was thinking of running Windows on my MacBook, but my Compaq and IBM laptops are still great - so why bother trying to mix platforms/OS's?

I ran a Hackintosh on my old AMD custom-built rig a while back, just to see if I could do it. It was a custom Tiger build for AMD. Since the rig has a DFi nForce4 chipset, it was pretty difficult to get it working, but when I did I was pretty happy, except for a few nuances. First, in order to recognize my USB keyboard and mouse I'd have to unplug them and re-plug every time I booted into OSX. Next, I had no sleep/wake functions at all.

In the end, I ended up buying a Mac Pro. First, I had wanted a Mac Pro for a long time. Second, i viewed it as a graduation present. And third, I didn't feel like building a new rig for Hackintosh purchases.

From all my readings about OSX86, it would seem that some people (can't quote specific numbers) who go the Hackintosh route often end up buying a genuine Mac. I think it's a great way for people to experience OSX without the sticker shock, sort of as a try before you buy experience.

For those who shun people interested in Hackintosh, I'd say many in that group are hopeless fanboys or just jealous because they can't do it themselves. And for those with jailbroken iPhones who shun the Hackintosh folks well, that's just Spitzerish of you.

Actually I can, but if it's anything like trying to get Windows to run on it....

Running OS X on a PC is a little harder than downloading ZiPhone, and pressing a button....

it is actually really easy to install leopard on a windows box since there are pre-patched disks of leopard made for running on non-genuine hardware (there are disks for both intel and amd as well).
what you need to know is your computer parts really well, know what brand you have/ what drivers etc, that way, you go on a website such as osx86.com and see if what you have is compatible or incompatible.
what I realized is people who received a good windows computer as a gift on holidays or if their parents bought it, they might be displeased by using windows. this is the best scenario for giving them osx, since they won't have to purchase another computer, but use the one they already have.
last time I checked, all best buy desktop computers are capable of installing osx on them, all you need to do is fiddle with the drivers, and if you look through the forums, all it takes is a simple kext add-on or just add your device number/ vendor id to an existing kext. a few hours of reading about it is all you need really :D

Similar to how Lexus makes Toyota, I think Apple should make a smaller subdivision of their company, too. Like a Toyota of Apple...

They could be low end, Dell-like Macs that run a dumbed down version of OS X. I think that if Apple did this, they'd grow a big share of the market.

I think this idea has a lot of merit (minus the "dumbed down OS X" part). Unfortunately, I don't think Steve will agree.

What apple needs is a mid ranged tower. Similar specs to the iMac, but with the Mac Pro customizability.

LOL. Welcome to the forums. Do you know how many people have been begging for this for years? Take a number and get in line man.

If Apple did follow the Toyota/Lexus model, they'd have to start producing high-end luxury machines, above the current range :D

Jeez..... just imagine if they did put their minds to producing luxury Apples....

I think what you meant is how Toyota makes Scion. That would be low end. BTW Lexus doesn't make Toyota...Toyota makes Lexus and for the most part under all the chrome leather and curves you have a Toyota.

I built a quad-core, 8GB, 500GB, 8800GT hackintosh for a little over $1000. It's fast and stable, and running 10.5.2 with no problems including all the software. I even own a copy of leopard just for it. I have installed updates with no problem directly from apple software update.

While I have other macs, I wanted something as fast as a Mac Pro without the price. I got it. I also had it running on another machine I have Vista 64-bit on and using a 8800GTS. The machine I built blows away any other Mac I have or even the top of the line iMac.

Fact is you can do it, and it's not real hard to do. I just wish apple would release something more midrange other than an iMac. Something that could have a better graphics card in it. The 2400 and 2600 are bottom of the line graphics cards. The Mac Pro just too expensive to justify things at the moment.

Would you mind posting the full specs of your system including the version of Leopard you installed - ie; did you patch it yourself or did you download a prepatched one? (Also very interested in motherboard)

Best regards,

True, true. I'm not much into cars myself so I don't really know
But it is a cool idea, but it will never happen. Not to mention, a Mac for PC type OS... it will be expensive. Instead of paying a premium for hardware, you'll pay for the software. In the end, it wouldn't be worth it.

Dimension 5150- driver help??

Last month I installed leopard on my friend's dell dimension 5150.
It was a pain, took me three days to get everything up and running, but once it was, it was amazing. Leopard runs soo fast on a celeron D 2.6ghz and 4gb of ram, its amazing that he payed only 400 for the computer and I bought 2 x 2gb ddr2 sticks for 60 dollars. It's amazing how much you get for such a little price. The only thing that you are violating is Apples little EULA (I think it's called). But all it says is don't run mac os x on non-apple branded hardware. So what I did was slapped one of my many apple stickers on the front of the computer and advised him to pay for his own retail copy. There! problem solved :D.

The difficulty is the drivers. Since mac only supports their own internal hardware, it is a nuisance getting video/ sound/ and networking drivers in place. But it's all a matter of simple research. PM me for any advice :D

Pattman 247-- I noticed you said you were successful in getting all the drivers for a Dimension 5150. Care to help me figure it out? I just finished getting OSX running and I was able to get my wifi card working fortunately by using a new Ralink driver that just came out in December, but I cant get the sound, integrated ethernet card, PCI X video card, etc working yet (who knows what else).

Can you send me an e-mail back or maybe post some links to where you found the drivers?

Thanks

Lol

I'm new to Apple and had no idea about this "Apple Philosophy". It's hilarious-one guy's giving another guy the "we speak nothing of that" speech. Another guy actually pledges his loyalty to Steve Jobs? LOL. It's like a bad episode of South Park. Yeah, like the one about the story of Joseph Smith! It's a cult you're all brainwashed can't you see?

You're new here, aren't you.....

I installed OSX on my machine while ago, was awesome, faster then my Macbook, since i got my e2160@ 3.2GHZ, with 4GB Memory :]. Enjoyed it. I'm still getting an iMac though, yeah Apple is overpriced, but the thing you don't get with PC is a compact system and the nice looks, less clutter since only a few wires.. or no wires if ur going wireless...

I still think if Apple had any smarts, it would try and build a more affordable system, I bet you a lot of computer users would turn to buying Mac's instead. Mac Mini doesn't count because it's still overpriced for the specs your getting. If Macs were the exact same price as PC's.. Mac's imo would start to dominate.

No, they're not. You don't know much about Macs, do you?

Ok, explain why you think they are not overpriced? I've had a Macbook before. Im fairly new to Mac, the reason I didn't buy it earlier is because of how expensive it is. At Psystar you can get a $554 system that's equivalent to the cheapest iMac which is at $1299. I call that overpriced.

So? I can buy a Kia with the same sized engine for a lot less than a BMW.

The Kia would still get me from A to B, but I'd be happier in the beamer.

You get what you pay for and the iMac is a nice object, which is nice to use and nice to own. It's a gadget, not a white good.

I think the iMac is good value, especially when you consider it's still worth a great deal in 3 years, whereas the Psystar will be worthless.
