    Hey everyone!

I was using a different smartphone that I owned a few years ago and then my wife who was on at&t had a chance of upgrading from her iphone 4 to an iphone5. I took her iphone 4 and started using it. I know I should've started using a new apple id from the get go but i continued using hers as her phone was setup more or less the same way that I wanted it so I never made my own new apple id.

A few days ago I decided to change that old apple id of hers on my phone to a new one under my name and email add and I managed to do this through appleid.apple.com. It changed successfully and I got to keep all the apps that I had on my phone with my new apple id. A day later my wife who was using the old apple id got an error when she wanted to download an app saying that her appleid does not exist. We thought this must be a problem with the phone so we logged onto appleid.apple.com on our laptop and tried to sign in with her appleid and it said that this appleid does not exist. Now she cant update or download new apps with the appleid shes been using for so long and that only a few days ago was active on both phones.

Has changing her appleid to the new one that I now use deleted her id completely?

How can she own her old apps back to update them?

We thought that signing in with my now new apple id on her phone will fix things since its basically replaced only in name but that didn't work either as she got to sign in with my new info but the "can't update these apps as they were purchased under a different apple id" error still keeps popping up.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you. I apologize in advance if this seems written a little complicated but I tried my best to be as clear as possible. Will try to answer any questions and hopefully it will lead to a solution. Thank you

It seems that you didn't create a new AppleId, but changed the old AppleId. So there was one valid AppleId X, and now there is still one valid AppleId Y. It's the same AppleId, just with a different name. So the name X that your wife tries, is not the name of your AppleId any more and doesn't work.

I'd suggest that you change back your AppleId, check that it all works, and then create a new AppleId if you want two different ones. You _will_ lose your purchases, because app purchases are connected to the AppleId.

So if I change my appleid back to the original appleid X then she'll be able to access her updates as well? Ok ill try doing that but my question is that since appleid X according to apple doesnt exist anymore, will using the same id X to replace Id Y bring back that connection between the id X and apps and the phone will now recognize it as the id used for apps on the phone?

Of he won't. Because the ID was actually the same.

Here's my understanding of the game.

Wife had an iPhone 4 and got a 5. Gave husband the 4. Wife has an Apple ID. All signed in everywhere on her phone--iCloud, iTunes, iMessage etc. On the 4 and the 5. Let's call this ID Tom.

Husband gets phone. Has all of wife's info etc out. Well meaning husband doesn't want to muck around with wife's info and decides he needs a different ID.

However instead of going and adopting a brand new ID he goes to court and has Tom's legal name changed to Harry. Life is good. He has a birth certificate etc that says he's got an ID named Harry.

Wife tries to use ID and shows her paperwork which still has the name Tom on it. Which doesn't match system cause Tom is missing. Tom isn't Tom anymore, he's Harry.

Now if husband takes his paperwork and asks to have Harry's name changed back to Tom everything is back to the way it was, with perhaps some new medical records cause he took 'Harry' to get his shots updated.

And with Tom back as Tom, husband can go properly adopt another id and name that one Harry.
