I'm not dealing with the Apple Store and limited stock, etc. just returning it. No exchanging. I guess it will make people here happy that I won't be exchanging or returning / rebuying like I didn't with the iPads to try my luck.

Where would I head? I like Apple's software and I am deeply invested in their ecosystem. And I don't think other manufacturers would be better honestly. And thank you- I will wear that title proudly if it means being rightfully angry with Apple or responding to flippant replies with the same tone.

Yes, but as I explained above, I don't think I have much of a choice.

Consider it done.

I will be returning via mail the way I ordered.
I am sure they will have stock for people with problems; they always have in the past. That said, do what you feel is best, as should always be the case. Last time I had to replace iPhones was with the 3gs (or was it 3G? Don't remember(. The dead/stuck pixels were like peppered on the screens. It was so bad we had Apple employees opening a phonea nd checking it before they even handed it to me. I think I hit 6 phones, which I thought was amazing lol.

any pedant (like many here!) who pays 1000$ + for a top quality device should be quite bummed if he has a scratch on his brand new phone. i don't get all the negativity. i certainly would be very annoyed, knowing it's a hassle to get a new one with all the madness of release date. probably will take him a few days to get a new one, if not more.

[edit, never mind, saw other post] I wasn't trying to be snarky. If you take it back to an Apple Store, they will have stock on hand for an immediate exchange under warranty. At least that's been true for other launches. That's assuming you want an exchange rather than an outright return.

I'm not dealing with the Apple Store. Can't stand even going in there. Honestly, I'm just disgusted at this point - and with my luck I'd probably get another device with something wrong and then I would have to explain everything in person again to a worker (like a lot of users here) who probably think I don't have common sense or can't see the issue I'm explaining for one reason or another. Would much rather just wait and try my luck with a new order in a few months or wait for the next version of the X. I really love the phone otherwise, total shame. Thanks for the info about the stores having replacement stock reserved, I didn't know that.

People (well some of them, at least) are giving you're throwing it back in their faces. Returning the phone and waiting several months or waiting for the 2nd gen one seems like a pretty rash decision. The Apple Store replacements during a product launch are very quick and simple. They'll let you open the phone and go through the bootup steps to make sure the replacement phone is up to your quality standard before sending you home.

I understand you're angry that your new phone has issues, but the people here on this forum shouldn't be the ones you get mad at, nor should the poor low-level sales and customer support people be your targets. Take a breath, take a step back, and you'll be fine.

He's saying he doesn't want to deal with the Apple Store. It's his choice. I don't think that if I were buying a launch-day phone of a completely new generation that I'd look at it in the all-or nothing way the OP is, but it's his choice.

View attachment 731642 View attachment 731643 View attachment 731644 View attachment 731645 View attachment 731646 This phone is beautiful and I love everything about it, except the scratches!

There are more scratches but this isn't the only one showing up on camera.

And the scratches are definitely in the glass. Since I'm returning it and I don't care about the oleophobic coating anyway, I decided to use a bit of alcohol to see if the scratches are in the coating or the glass- but they are indeed in the glass.

Looks like maybe you dropped it removing it from the box.

And I was just trying to explain, rationally, why for an issue like he or she is having it is different than any other time going into one of those stores. Maybe I was unclear though and that is my fault.

Sorry, but you aren't understanding me at all. I will leave it at that.

No, but thanks for the accusation. I opened it on my bed, as you can see it resting on my comforter. I saw the scratches as soon as I peeled off the plastic and I was surprised.

Just got mine from the Apple store as a walk in. Sadly mine has a very tiny single hairline scratch about .5 mm long. I will be returning this when apple has the space gray model as that is what i wanted originally but went with silver as that's the only one left.

OP, Whether or not your X has scratches from the factory if you have returned 24 iPads, its not Apple, it's you.

I have returned about that number over the course of years, not months or days. And no, sorry - no matter how you spin it the issue is not me. The phone has scratches out of the box and that's a fact- whether I received it, someone who returned 125 iPads, or someone who has returned 0. You probably think that this is a boy who cried wolf situation, and that's fine (I prefer to think I am simply very astute), but you can't argue with facts.

Bye Felecia!!!!
Sorry, not going anywhere, sweetheart.

I am not sure why you are posting at all. Return it and be done. It is funny that the guy who returned 24+ iPads get the first reports scratched iPhone X screen.
I am posting to encourage others to check for scratches before using their devices. This shouldn't be acceptable.

Sorry Myrtle, just kidding. I can not blame you for being upset but you have been in these forums enough to see things like this, you especially should know people will joke!

Also, you know what- whoever thinks this isn’t a big deal, I have a proposal - why don’t we trade phones and I’ll take your scratchless phone and you can have mine. Would make me very happy, save me a return, and you wouldn’t have to hear me complain anymore.

With all due respect, if you do not want the phone that is perfectly fine and all. I am sure many thousands of users have scratch free phones. You also do not want to step foot into an Apple store, that is also at your discretion.

However did you think that calling Apple up would resolve your problem? They do an exchange program, and will likely send you a new iPhone X via overnight shipping. No need to wait months. I think you will be better off going that route, and you can certainly enjoy your phone for months/years to come.

Honestly, I would react the same way as you, except I would take it to Apple instead of just returning. There is no reason for a $1k phone to arrive with scratches. I would make Apple send me another phone, rather than going to the store where they can say that you did the damage.

Thanks. I was under the impression that any replacement phones would also take weeks to months to arrive. At which point my rationale would be just to wait a couple of months after the rush has died down to maybe get a phone more carefully assembled (doubtful, but still). Maybe I’ll call after I cool down. I am just disgusted at the moment.

Just imagine how much more profitable Apple would be if they adopted a less open returns policy. All products should be returnable within 14 days, although where there is no fault a small restocking fee (1-2%). Further returns of the same products where there is no genuine fault should incur larger restocking fees (4-5%) and returns of more than 3 products should only be accepted for genuine warranty claims.

I think I must be up ~20 large Apple purchases and have only returned one which has been damage in transit (a big dent in the top of an Airport Extreme). Apples quality control is excellent, so I fail to see how some people can be so unlucky that they receive faulty item after faulty item?
