Anyone use a straight razor?

I used the Power Fusion this morning for the first time and it was okay. I have an on-camera class tonight so I'll see how bad my shadow shows up on film. Usually, I get at most four shaves out of a Mach3 Turbo which sucks since I shave every day.

I'm tempted to be a "man" and learn how to use a straight razor and save a ton of money. Spend $20 a month on cartridge blades or $150 on a good carbon steel blade that'll last a lifetime. Hmmm...anyone else use a straight razor?

There are queues to get into nightclubs?

Yeah, it sucks but it's the norm over here. :(

I think you forgot a bit :p

- get let straight into any pub or nightclub, skipping queues proportionally according to cleavage size
...but have to queue for the toilets

Ahh, okay, fair point. Cleavage apparently doesn't really help in that queue... :(

I get 20 BIC's for about $1.50 and I typically use one for about a month at a time.

I don't get razorburn, I'm just rah like that :p

I've got Iron Man's beard so I try to avoid shaving as much as possible. I can rend into dullness any razor I've tried, except for my grandfather's straight-razor which I won't use for fear of dismemberment.

I have a pretty good system. I use an electric first, which does a crappy job, but I got it free and I just use it while reading stuff online or whatever. Then I do a quick cleanup with a razor. I just splash some water on my face and clean up the stubble. And then I use the blades for a pretty long time.

I too have been intrigued by the classic straight razor...I would be interested to hear from any users.

Or you could spend $1000+ on laser hair removal and forget about paying for shaving cream and the whole nine yards. And because your an Apple fan, your bathroom will look so much cleaner, less clutter, and no razor burn, or stubble for the rest of your life. Yep, your right, its all about relative perspective

I get several weeks out of Gillette Mach 3 Turbo and Fusion blades. I shave in the shower and find that it tends to help blade life - it's easier to shave after my face has been drenched for a few minutes.

I would not want to swap places with a woman, unless you mean that literally, in which case, yes, there are, I'm sure, women in places I'd rather be.

I have it kind of easy since I only have to shave my cheeks and some area on my neck. I semi gotee going thing. (full beard just around the mouth area and chin). Save a lot on blades. If I had to shave my chin I think the blades last a week at most. Right now I get about 2 weeks a blade and my hair grows pretty fast. It takes me less than 2 weeks for me to grow what I have right now on my face and it look like i have been growing it for a while. Trim it up and it looks great but I also among the few guys out there who can grow facial hair and look good.

As an added bonus I can get way with not shaving for a few days and still look ok. As for growing it the hardest part is getting though the really ichy stage that comes in after about a week and doesnt go way for a few days.

When I used Sensor 3's, I was able to get over about 30-40 days with one blade.

I've been using the new Fusion for the past 2 weeks, still on my first blade, and still going.

And I shave every morning, every square inche of hair, against the grain once, and then against the grain a second time by stretching skin in areas like under the jaw line.

Anytime over 5-10 minutes (unless I'm going out) is too much, if my hair gets too much to manage I just chop it off again.
That's why the hair above my neck is the shortest of all. No combing, just wash-n-go. :D

Alternatively, depending on how you're dressed, one could always walk into the men's, its not as clean usually but there's often much less of a line. :p
From what I've heard, the women's room in the building I hang out in most at school is usually several times nastier than the men's, which usually smells at most.

Very true. Men don't care if women walk into their restrooms, but I doubt that women would be very receiving of me (or any guy) what walked into theirs for whatever reason.....

In my experience, razors last about a week before getting too dull for comfort. I buy disposable Schick Extreme 3 razors; Mach 3 blades are too expensive and less comfortable IMO, and they seem to last about the same length of time before dulling.

I got a mach 3 turbo and I shave every second day but not everywhere, I usually have a lineup meaning some sort of design with my facial hair. But yeah, the Mach 3's last a while.

Two shaves per blade. Shave every day. Those things get dull after two uses ... at least in my case. I think I need a good straight razor.

It doesn't seem like all that much hair, either.

I use a turkish razor which has disposable blades. I don't mean blades that are in little plastic holders, I mean the actual blades themselves. They're your classic suicide wrist slasher blades.

They're about £1 for a pack of 10 from any local turkish newsagent or corner shop, and the pack is half the size of a matchbox (same size as a bar matchbook).

I use a new blade every time i shave, which means I always shave with a brand new blade.

These blades can fit in straight edge cutthroat shavers, but the holder I have is like your normal gillette, with saftely guards, and the top opens up to put the blades in.

Still, when my brother stayed over, then asked to borrow my razor, he took one look and refused to use it...

I used to get terrible razor burn with just about any other shaver but not with this. I used to wear out Gillette Mach 3's in a few days, so this is cheaper, and better too.

I actually usually keep a permenant 2 day stubble and trim it down each morning with some decent electric hair clippers (yes, they're for hair not chins, so?), but when I'm presenting or doing TV work, I'll do the full monty baby's bum shave.

One thing that has really helped with the razor burn is borrrowing my girlfriend's expensive organic facial moisturiser :) :)

I just bought a Fusion the other week. It's the best shave I've ever had. I don't break out on my neck nearly as much, and my wife loves it.

On topic, I usually change the blade about once every 7-10 days, depending on whether or not I shave every day. After that, the little green strip no longer does it's job. And no, I'd not change genders. I like being a guy thanks very much.

Interestingly enough I just found this: www.shaveblog.com and www.classicshaving.com. The first is a blog all about shaving and the second is a website that sells classic straight and safety razors.

Top tip!!!! Thanks for finding and posting that - just gone to the second site and ordered the Merkur "Futur" Double-edge safety razor for myself.

No brushes - I use Gilette regular gel - they can have all sorts of fungi and bacteria growing on them unless they are regularly cleaned/sterilised, and users often get minor skin infections.

Thanks again for passing that on.

Mach 3 Turbo

I use the Mach 3 Turbo disposable, and the max I got was seven shaves. That comes to about 36 cents per shave. Although, I usually average 5 shaves per disposable. If you include the shaving cream and aftershave, or face lotion, we are looking at 75 cents per day. Where is the outrage? And most people in the world lives on less than a dollar a day!

With the new Fusion razor, we are talking about a dollar per day for shaving alone! Dear god!

The Mach 3 isn't disposable, just the cartridges. As for the cost, I fight it in three ways:
A) Get my parents to buy the cartridges
2) Shave once a week
III) Don't use lotion, gel, or foam, etc.

My goodness, there are quite a number of ladies on this messageboard. No offense to you fellas but I thought only guys would be geeky enough to be on this sort of thing.

So ladies, how you doin?

You'd be surprised, this forum is different than most.

People here are much friendlier and welcoming (as far as I can tell), which is encouraging to people who are often shunned from tech-oriented web forums, such as older people, gays and women.

Some generalizations, though I think on the whole it's true.
