Yeah and I paid a one time fee for Halide until they decided to move to a subscription model and make early adopters pay another fee to own it for life. I'm sure they'll do the same with their video app Kino. Not supporting this company.
Edit: others say they were grandfathered in and this info isn't accurate

I agree, ProRAW does come out really smooth, with no grain. Which could be seen as unnatural if you're not a fan. But I find it looks a lot better than the "deep fried" default look, so my brain can just pretend it's a really sharp large sensor with lots of light gathering.
Definitely better than default HEIC. But for detail fiends like myself it's not quite enough. See the example of the baby on Halide's recent blog post: https://www.lux.camera/introducing-process-zero-for-iphone/

I purchased Halide Mark II in 2021, and I am very happy with the app. Even if I still prefer the iPhone 7+ for photos. Along with my Canon 5D mkII. I will most likely use the process zero on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

At least Halide can still be purchased, albeit for a higher price 👍

FiLMiC Pro is subscription only, since version 7. Thankfully those of us which purchased version 6, aka FiLMiC Pro Legacy, can still use it (if we don't update it). Or switch to Blackmagic Cam.

Correct me if I'm wrong but im pretty sure the camera in the Lightroom app do this as well.

Hey Alex! Lots of camera apps out there, of course :) Glad you are doing your thing.

I wasn’t aware of mood camera but going by your site, you use ProRAW or JPEG as well as color presets. That’s all a lot more processing than we do - we always work with native RAW and do not apply any presets, and we skip the entire iPhone processing pipeline. We start with the raw sensor data.

Again, lots of room to do different things in the App Store, and plenty of room for us to all get along. Dismissing lots of our work as just ‘nice branding’ isn’t very fair though! I am sure your app is a lot more than just a nice brand, too. :)
I agree there’s something for everyone and I think Halide is a great app, however from trying out your new feature, to my eye it just looks like a “RAW” photo, which is fine.. but you’ve branded it to try and make it out to be more than that. I don’t want to start a fight, just saying how I see it.. maybe you can enlighten me.

Btw, in mood.camera you can use the “Stock DIGI-N” preset and you’ll just get ProRAW images without any sharpening.

Just buy a real digital camera and be done with this iPhone camera madness — forever
I own a digital camera and use it whenever possible, but it’s not as simple as you say. Good digital cameras cost a lot of money, and people can’t carry them everywhere they go like they do their phones. Even small ones are too large to be as convenient.

I just compared Process Zero against Apples 12mp processed and Proraw and I'm very happy with Halide's processing! Silky, smooth photos that finally fit in with a mirrorless camera. Thanks Halide team!

Okay that is completely fair and they absolutely should have grandfathered lifetime purchasers in. Early adopters are often loyalists - why would they alienate you out of everyone?
That person doesn’t know what they’re talking about for the most part. Halide moved to subscription yes, but one time purchasers (like me!) are grandfathered in. I bought Halide forever ago with a one time purchase when it was brand new and I have this new feature. Just checked.

So great to hear this! We’ll run a photo contest with Process Zero starting soon, so stay tuned :)

I just compared the mood.camera stock Digi-N preset to a Process Zero photo and the edge shaping in mood.camera is still relevant, (white outlines prevelant on left image). Nice app though. I appreciate the filmic looks and will continue to use!

Hi @Cocoi! Interesting approach. Just a quip, did Coverage really go away? I can’t find it in Halide anymore after getting the update.

EDIT: Disregard... It’s under “advanced options” after I long press on the RAW/HEIC icon.

60 bucks for a camera app is hilarious and ridiculous. I’m so sick of these subscription apps but having a pay once option that’s equally extortionate is even worse. I want to OWN the stuff I buy!!

Why shouldn’t developers get paid for the work they do? Do you work for free? $19.99/year is 5 cents per day. “Grr these greedy developers want 5 cents per day, extortionate thieves how do they even sleep at night?” Do you literally even hear yourself?

This is frustrating because Halide USED to do this by default until only a couple of years ago. Now its a feature. Correct me if I'm wrong - but I'm pretty sure that is why I started, and stopped, using Halide.

I always look back at the photos that I took with my iPhone 8+ from 2017-2021 with amazement at generally how much better they often look than pictures I've taken in the last few years with my iPhone 13 and 14 Pro Max. I hate the overly aggressive "Smart" HDR and wish Apple would allow us to turn it off like they used to.
I remember being blown away with the photos on the iPhone 4. Haven't checked recently but they probably hold up well too.

I use Sony Xperia 1V as my second device. Pictures it takes aren’t so post processed. They may look dull sometimes but very true to the reality.

How hard it can be for Apple to have an option to turn off all processing in settings? Even the simple settings to turn off HDR in camera app is not available. It was there in my 12PM.

I enjoy reading the comments on almost anything photo graphic on a, mostly, intellectual level. Fifty years ago I used to process and print my own black and white photos but, due to being rather severely red/green colorblind I have never been able to process or edit color photography.

That's because you consider only one app at a time instead of looking at the big picture.

There are thousands of developers wanting those subscriptions, and if you look at the big picture paying a subscription for every app in perpetuity is simply unaffordable.

Think of the customers too.

Well it's too expensive for my photo taking, and tbh it looks too complex for my photo taking needs too.

Can anyone recommend a (one time payment) photo app that takes just a jpeg without "enhancements" or "AI"?

This does sound like a good idea.
Photon Camera from Latenightsoft aka the old Camera+…which was sketchy sold and the people started afresh. The old Camera+ app was outstanding, but I won’t install it now that it is owned by someone else who doesn’t answer their emails.

This will be really useful. Also good that one time purchase is allowed.
