13" MBP 2.4GHz C2D 4GB RAM - 19 mins 25 secs @ 12,32 fps

I really need a faster mbp:D
Or i just shouldn't look at benchmarks like this anymore..

FWIW:

2010 13" MPB 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB Ram, 250GB HDD (all stock)

Time: 19min 14sec FPS: 12.446630 fps

I ran it only once, but I made sure that I had no background applications running.

I've got a 2011 2.3 15" w/ 4GB of ram, I'll run the encoding test later today!

Edit: Just went a round:
[15:08:25] work: average encoding speed for job is 43.990734 fps

Looks like it took 5m27s. Had my CPU up to about 87C and the fans spinning at almost 5k RPM. I'm guessing we'll see a bit of difference on two identical machines due to cooling differences, a laptop that can't cool as well will turbo boost for a shorter period of time, and will take longer to encode.

we should really be taking into consideration HDD Speed 5400 VS 7200 VS SSD (VS 3rd party SSD)

Originally did but looking through all the results and comparing showed no real differences. If there was a difference then I would include it.

+1. Even the slowest hard drive type (presumably the 5400RPM HDD) isn't the limiting factor when running this particular benchmark.

I guess so but it just doesn't seem to make sense that a 17" with the same specs as my machine is slower than my 15"

but that said, I am proud to have the fastest score on this benchmark (even with dashboard running 'cause I forgot to terminate it :p ) :D

We can't get perfect results because we can't ensure everyone has nothing running in the background, etc. I'd speculate that they had something else running.

I will have a try with a cooler environment later today and see if this improves the 13" i7 4GB SSD Benchmark

Mid 2010 Core i7

Mid 2010 Core i7 2.66 Ghz, 8 GB on 160 GB SSD....

[00:06:16] work: average encoding speed for job is 21.072506 fps

It took 11 minutes and 15 seconds or so.

Wows... so the new MBPs are more than twice as fast for encoding at least..

I wish I could DL and contribute but my only internet line doesn't allow me to visit the site... =(

So if anyone will contribute a 2010 2.8ghz core I7 w/ 8gb ram... I am curious on how I will stack up against the new SB.

I just bought the 15" 2.0 ghz i7. It still has the standard 4gb of RAM. I ran the test last night, but i'm not sure where to look in handbrake to find the results you guys have. Maybe I'm just an idiot lol.

Anyways, seemed to average about 6 or so minutes at around 36 fps. If someone can tell me where to look for the exact results I will update this post. Thanks!

2010 Mac Pro 2.8 quad 16 gb ram 6:12 @ 38.688240 fps - Max CPU temp 43 degrees

By the way to those talking about HDD speed and memory:

RAM: While running this handbrake only uses 600MB RAM so the lowest modern configuration of RAM (4GB in MBP) would not come close to being slowed down by this program.

HDD: The end file is roughly 220 MB. Current SSDs are writing around 220MB per second, 7200rpm HDD are around 120MB per second and a 5400HDD around 80MB per second. Take the slowest HDD the 5400rpm at 80MB per second you can see that the HDD could write this file in 2.75 seconds @80MB/S. You will need one heck of a processor before you max out your HDD's write speed.

Another way to look at the HDD situation: The fastest computer tested so far was the 6 core MP in 3:34 the slowest HDD here could write around 17GB in that time again we are only dealing with 220MB. We are using 1% of the slowest hard drives potential.

Bottom line is HDD and RAM make no real difference in this test it is just processor and maybe your heat management:)

on the top of the handbrake app window you will see an icon "Activity Window" look for that. Then in the report it puts up you will see a start time and a time in which it will read average FPS that is the end time.

Update to my 13", i7, 4 GB, SSD Benchmark

Run it from a real cold start (not used it for about 8 hours, placed in a cool environment) while I lifted the MBP with a DVD-Cakebox at the screenside.
So the fan-exit was about 2-3cm above the table. My previous test was done putting it on a stool.
While I was running the test I kept blowing cool breath underneath the MBP...

This is what I found:

FOURTH TEST:
Start: 15:35:03
End: 15:43:58
TIME: 8 min. 55 sec.

work: average encoding speed for job is 27.050133 fps

That's an improvement of nearly 3 fps and roughly 1 min!!!:confused::eek::eek:

I'd like to hear your opinion about that!

It's interesting but maybe a small fan would be better than making yourself pass out.

Did only one test but I wanted to see how slow my old Mac Pro was against your new wonderful MB Pro's :)

Mac Pro 2x2,66 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon 6GB RAM - 9 mins 56 secs @ 22.29 fps

Yeah, it is getting old!!!

I Win!

2.2 GHz C2D MBP (Dual core, 2007)

30m 34s = 7.83 FPS.

I win backwards. :p

2.2 GHz Quad i7 MBP on its way to me. Looking forward to over 5x my present CPU speed :)

Found this thread while searching for Sandy Bridge performance, so I thought I'd add some extra comparative results as I don't have an MBP!

Mac Mini 2GHz C2D / 4Gb RAM = 22m33s 10.86fps

I also ran it on two Windows 7 x64 systems - although Handbrake is only 32bit on Windows - the results seem right in line with the OSX results...

Dell i7-620M Dual Core Laptop / 4Gb RAM = 12m19s 19.46fps
Dell 2x 3GHz Quad Core Xeon / 20Gb RAM = 4m36s 52.20fps

mid 2007 17" mbp

Well I don't have the time it took, but I do know that the average fps was 7.89. 2.4 Ghz dual core, 4 gb ram.

I will be getting the new 2.2 ghz i7 17" mbp in the next month or so, and I'll post before and after fps with my own cooling system applied :D
