FANTASTIC!

Here is what I have for devices:

-20" iMac
-15" Lenovo Notebook PC
-12" HP EliteBook 2730p Tablet PC (Supplied by the school where I teach.)
-32 GB iPod Touch (I also have an 80GB Classic, but that is just a music player for me.)
-Motorola Droid

Now how does the iPad fit into this equation? Can someone here explain why I would need this device or why anyone who owns the same sort of devices that I do would need it?

That is what I am struggling with. Maybe I just don't get it.

Because you won't be part of the in crowd at Starbucks without it. The Lenovo is just so uncool.

...its not for those who want to get a cheap SuperPower MacOS workstation like Touchscreen Notebook.

What?! You're telling me the iPad is as powerful (hardware wise) as a Mac?!...wait, you said a WORKSTATION so you're stating as powerful as the $2500 Mac Pro?! The Operating System MAY BE SIMILAR, but you can't possibly use the word "superpower" in the same discussion about an OS that lacks multitasking in 2010...heck, even if it was 2001.

This device is for those who own an iPhone or an Ipod Touch and still have no Mac. It is for those who own a Mac but don't want to carry that one around always.

I don't think those 2 audiences are the target audiences. I own an iPhone 3GS (and also a Mini from 2007)...if I wanted a poartable Mac experience, I would spend the extra money and get a true portable Mac for $999 that is designed to be a Mac and is branded as a Mac. And realistically, if I want the Mac experience on the iPad, I would need to buy the $599 or $699 model for storage reasons. So what's an extra $300 or $400 to get a REAL COMPUTER that is designed to be a COMPUTER (see my next point). Again, this is not the iMacMobile...it is the iPad...the OSes between the iPad and Mac are similar...but also very similar to the iPhone OS.

It is for those who really care a **** about "background processes" but just want to have a nice thing that DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO.

And this is the big problem...what is this iPad supposed to do? See my post on page 13. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/855039/

The iPad has a serious identity problem...which is always bad for consumers as well as Product Management/Product Marketing at Apple.

An "illegal installation???" OH NO!! IT'S SO SCARY!!!! Hackintosh the world and to hell with apples legal BS!!!! It's the only thing that made the iphone a real computer and worth anything.

Cool, so you got an Android mobile now?

I wish you would put your efforts into something more constructive.

See, I would buy a dodge pickup to carry heavy load. You would buy it to be able of hammering around under its hood to make it go as fast as a Porsche.

If I would buy a Porsche to have a cool racing car I can drive on a public road, then you would only buy it if you could try to break it by fumbling with its breaks, making it stop immediately if one hits the breaks. Too bad for those inside if that would even work.

I mean, nobody with half a brain goes out to pay $600 for a high end mobile with a touch to then just try to open it up, break it up and to use that tiny thing as a Computer? You could have gotten a full PC for that money, little to speak of at least two netbooks?

You want to fix a "computer". Then why dont you try to brake your satellite receiver or your Wal Mart Accesss Point ( they run linux).

When i was sixteen years old, we built joysticks by ourselves, we didn't highjack others products to proclaim them being trash and tapping a bell on it to make it 'useful'.

I dont mind hacking around out of interest or curiosity. But I do mind thieves who state that they where given no choice but to steal.

I want to use a Phone as a Phone and expect it to work.
I want to use a Mac, so i will use Mac OS even if i could use Windows instead or anything else available.

So, Mr uberhacker, where would your Hackintosh be without apple?
Where would Apple be without you?
Seems, not all users share your insight of that topic :)

This thing is essentially even more crippled than the MacBook Air.
I'm not sure why you'd want this thing, but then again I'm probably not the target audience.

Ignoring the competition, I'm sure it could make quite a nice home theatre remote (even if you're forced to use event servers and ir/rf transceivers).

Other than that, it serves little purpose and holds little interest for me. Might be a bit more interesting with a real OS installed (and some I/O ports in a future revision?), I'll have to wait and see.

Pardon, but I said that it is not, hence not meeting some peoples wishes.

I was, as usual, doing some internet browsing in bed as I drift off to sleep. I was doing this on my iPhone but reading for an hour or so on the small screen gets a tad restrictive, so I busted out the laptop. But now I got this big thing on my lap when I just want to be rolling around in bed reading in any comfortable position as I was with my iPhone.

Guess what device would be perfect for this situation...

Exactly!

You know, I use my iPod to surf for hours, every day. The only problems I run into are the inability to play flash games - that I'd never play anyway - and embedded movies that aren't on youtube. Any well written site doesn't use flash for much else. I've never run into problems.

All hype, no substance.
Can't play games that aren't goofy apps. Can't use it for my camera, can't use it for design, doesn't fit in your pocket and you can''t make calls with it. Itunes and Ibooks can both jump in a lake, and anyone willing to spend a 1000$ on this thing are complete suckers.

I've used it maybe three times — but you know what else it's good for, is adjusting the brightness of your screen to account for high or low light. I think that's a really nice feature of the MacBook Pro (and MacBook?) and would have liked it for this, too.

I'm sure it'll have a brightness setting somewhere, though.

The MBP and MB do not use the camera for adjusting screen brightness. There's an ambient light sensor for that. On my old MBP it's under the speaker grill on the right side. The iPad also has an ambient light sensor just like the iPhone and iPod touch.

And finishing the thought, it uses the sensor to automatically adjust brightness, just like the MBP.

I'm really not trying to be a smarta$$ here, but what do you all need multitasking for? I get that you can't listen to pandora and view the web. But you can listen to your own library and do pretty much anything else (minus apps that have their own sounds.) I guess I just don't do that many things at one time when I'm not on a real computer, but I'm curious what people are not able to do because the iP's lack multitasking.

The answers are so blindingly obvious that it's not even worth listing out.

My biggest question about this device is this... If you're on a cross country flight, and want to watch a movie on this thing, how exactly are you going to hold it? Are you going to put it on your lap and stare down at your legs all flight? Put it on your seat-try and still have to stare down? Are you going to hold it the whole time?

With all the flaws this thing has, the usability is the biggest thing for me. I just can't see carrying this thing around comfortably and using it without straining your neck or arms.

Magical? That's laying it on a bit thick, even by Apple standards. I haven't ruled it out yet, though. If it's comfy to hold, I could use one to browse (some of) the web in bed before I go to sleep.

Really? Not even one little example? IM gets notifications, and on an iPod touch, or iPad without 3G, I really don't get it. Seriously, just 1 or 2 examples and I'll probably agree with you.

Well it's only 1.5 pounds so you could hold it, or you could get the cover which doubles as a stand. Have you ever read a hard cover book on a plane? Most hard covers are at least that heavy.

It's not a Macbook Pro. It's not a smartphone. It's an iPad.

If you want a lightweight, portable, touch-screen device with a 9.7 inch screen to watch movies and photos on and surf the net, access your email, play a few games, do some casual work - and whatever else developers, schools and enterprises can envisage for it - then you have a product you can buy at a pretty aggressive price. You're not meant to edit video or do music production on an iPad - not yet anyway. For sure, I'd have liked a camera for ichat and bigger storage. But that's for the next revision when I am most likely to get one. If you're in the market for a netbook or an e-reader then the iPad looks very tempting. I'm sure that's the market Apple are considering. And also explains some of its perceived limitations.

As for it being an oversized ipod touch - well yeah and then some. It's got a faster processor, wireless 802.11 N, an IPS screen, a dock for an external keyboard, customizable background, longer battery life, and of course, a bigger screen.

I think it's pretty cool for what it is. But then again I never bought into the pre-launch fantasies. Now it's here, I think it's got huge potential. Once developers start creating for it and it gets a video camera, well it could be really tempting...
