"Hands-On Review of Oral-B's iPhone-Connected Bluetooth Smart Toothbrush"

I never, ever thought I would read such a headline, followed by one of the longest articles I think I've seen on Mac Rumors. Jesus H Christ.

Ladies, gentlemen, and others ...

We now have a new dictionary definition for;

"unnecessary"

- a toothbrush connected to a smart phone

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I still stick to a regular old $5 tooth brush, some dental floss, and a bit of flouride

Most ridiculous article I have ever read on here, I have an oral-b electric toothbrush and it's great, this has no advantages and adults should not need motivating or entertaining to clean there teeth properly because they cannot take their eyes off their phones...

It's a toothbrush, use it and forget about it...

How lazy is society? Jeez.

It actually take a lot more time to brush with electric brush. The brush head is small, every single tooth will take u 5 to 10 second to clean. You will notice the different instantly how clean it is compare to conventional brush.

Oral-B electric toothbrushes are great, but Bluetooth-connecting it is just silly. There is absolutely no need for that, the regular brush does everything you need, without a smartphone.

Next up: the new iPhone-connected toilet brush, and the all new iPhone-connected bathtub thermometer. All of them require you to hold your increasingly thin yet increasingly wide and still very expensive device above a water-filled container with one hand so that you can read interesting facts about what you're doing in case you forget what you're meant to be doing.

Overall, the app is a useful tool for keeping yourself motivated to brush and for tracking brushing statistics.

So keeping your teeth healthy isn't enough motivation for you?

Two minutes may not seem like a long time, but brushing that long can get tiresome without entertainment.

There is a way to check the battery on the toothbrush, near the bottom of the handle, there are three battery "bars". 3 = full, 1 = nearly empty.

You don't need to have the iPhone app running to track usage, you can brush without it (for several days in a row) and then sync it back to the app later, without the brush running. The truth is, I almost never use the brush with the app running.

Otherwise, good review.

To those mocking the need for a smart toothbrush: some of us need extra motivation. The fact that the app will actually tell me if I skip brushing at night, often does give me motivation to take the extra 2 minutes and brush, instead of just falling into bed after falling asleep on the couch. I'm not proud of this...

Glad this story wasn't published on April 1. I keep up with tech but had no idea a BT enabled toothbrush was a thing. Too me its absurd but then my brother thinks my using a Sonicare is lazy. So if there is a market for this kind of thing more power too them... no pun intended. Ha.

I have a Sonicare and I brush my teeth for 3 minutes x 2/3 times a day, plus I floss and use mouthwash twice. So that's a lot of time in the bathroom brushing my teeth, which does get boring. I usually read a book while I brush though.

It's hard to brush for two minutes straight, so yes, I do think this app motivates people to brush for a longer period of time than they might without it.

Yep, I knew about the battery bars, just seems like the app could display something a bit more precise, you know? Since it's connected to the toothbrush anyway and can presumably read that. In testing, I mostly used the brush without the app too, but the major issue I had with that is that it didn't give me a way to log flossing/rinsing after the fact since there's no manual entry for that (as far as I saw).

Is no support for multiple users really a Con? Who shares their toothbrush?

Uhm, you've never had a brush like this? Two people use separate heads, but the base is the same.

So, yes, no support for multiple users is an outright deal-killer.

And information like "too much pressure" is actually rather useful and can prevent some common problems.

I would think not looking like you live in Appalachia would be enough motivation.

I am all for the internet of things. But a tooth brush? Really?

This is ... stupid.

Now a washing machine that tells me I have damp clothes ready for the dryer or a fridge that tells me I'm out of milk, sign me up!

The future is here, my friend! My current one is flashing the display and does beep a couple of times.
The communal ones when I went uni. would send me a text five minutes before they were done!

That is awesome! Especially when using communal washers and dryers. So much better than a toothbrush telling my phone that I'm using to much pressure. LOL.

I hear some women use these as vibrators. Maybe thats what its really designed for. The app feedback could be interesting for them.

Pretty disgusting to use a toothbrush in your mouth and then on your privates. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of brushing your teeth in the first place? Even if you take off the brush part you have germs on the body.

I can go with that. I own one of those tooth brushes. Tried to connect it to my phone out of novelty. It was flaky at best at working. Have not bothered in the 4 months sense then.

Only reason I got it was my sonic care toothbrush battery stop holding a charge. You get a few years out of them then have to replace the handle.

i use a sonicare, used to use an oral-b but after upgrading when my oral-b broke noticed the sonicare gives a better result. the thing i hate about non electrics is my tendency to jab myself in the gums or jaw from time to time. since using the sonicare and a waterpik i have had only stellar reports from the dentist.

interestingly a government study of both also found the sonicare to be a better brush...
