On a per core basis are these faster? Also does rosetta handle multi-core or is each app on one core?

Awesome, thank you. It looks quite a bit thicker, but the specs sheet has it as only a few mm difference. Is that because of the tapered design of the 13"?
In a word, yes. The 13" MBPs for a while now have been thickest in the middle (this feels familiar, ha), so it's not as easy to see their maximum dimensions visually when looking at the side of the machine.

For what it's worth, I am totally in love with my new 14" M1 Pro. I'd say so far it's definitely the best laptop or computer in general that I've ever owned, and this includes the form factor and style as well as performance. Not too many people are mentioning the keyboard -- it's incredible, more like the best stand-alone keyboards that Apple has made for the past few years (non-butterfly), than the keyboard (non-butterfly) that's built into even the latest 13" and 16" machines. It's palpably better to type on. And OMFG, I forgot how much I missed having a large ESC key! The Touch ID works much better than the small black square from the previous generation(s), too. The thing is awesome -- and yes, there are multiple ways to get your menu bar to always be the dark/black version, so guess what -- NO NOTCH! I'm in Mac heaven!!!

The notch provides space for the upgraded 1080p camera, and the ambient light/true tone sensors. Therefore a functional purpose.
And OMFG once again, it's trivial to make the notch TOTALLY DISAPPEAR by either choosing a desktop image that forces a black menu bar, or using one of the utility apps that are available which force a black menu bar no matter your desktop image. The notch is gone, and oh look, now I have more screen real estate, because my Menu Bar was always at the top of the screen anyway...

I think some of the anti-notch brigade have got to be Intel/MS/HP/etc. PR people. It's ridiculous. I also wouldn't be shocked if Apple adds a System Preference option to force a black menu bar, just to make it super-trivial to "disappear" the notch if so desired.

My custom build 14" just got delivered a week early! Love it so far. If you remember the later PowerBook G4s and the first gen Intel Mac Book Pros, this new generation kinda feels like a miniaturized version of it. Feels nostalgic to me and it looks kinda cute like from seeing scaled down miniatures.

Notch is tolerable but taller screen is awesome. Surprised that it got warm, unlike my M1 Air, though I guess part of that is the Air is fanless so Apple probably kept temps well in check.

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR NEW MACBOOK PRO!!!!
I just received my new 16” m1 Max (with Monterey preinstalled) and it completely bricked my new macbook. ??‍♂️

All i get it a never ending loop of it trying to load.

Update: keyboard commands don’t work such as command + R and even connected a second macbook with recovery software. Still unresponsive. Even apple support is lost.

The proper way on these new M1 is to press and hold the power button and release it after a moment during boot.

Seems like even Apple employees don't know the proper way to pull recovery on the M1 chips. Not like it means anything but I had to also educate the guys at the apple store when I went to exchange my M1 Pro a couple of weeks ago. ?‍♂️

1) Why triple posting, there is an edit function
2) Why go overboard, it's a mere software bug which will be fixed

Those Pro Macbooks are not made for you. Rather than ranting about the notch in every thread, simply get a different device. ?‍♂️

I was just waiting for an upgrade and this ruined it for me. Also, I love tech and this thing honestly looks laughable and hideous to me. I also find it as a step back for the laptop industry -- this, instead of putting cams under the screen and taking advantage of every inch.

I actually don't mind the notch on the MacBook Pro since its a relatively small amount of the overall space and you can still use the menu bar around it. I hate it on the iPhone since it is a significantly larger portion of the screen and now I can't see as much information as I could before. I'd rather they have stuck with a notchless design even if it meant a small "forehead" on the iPhone. But for the MacBook Pro? No problem.
Would be nice if these notches didn't exist, but I figure as obsessed as Apple is with every detail, they carefully weighed the pros and cons and went with the present solution(s), at least for now, as the best—perhaps only solution. Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit?

I tried this as well. Apple was also unable to fix it in store. Turns out it’s a defective unit. They made me return the macbook and place a new order. Unfortunately, now i have to wait 5-6 weeks. Very frustrating.

I think this whole notch situation is a repeat of what happened (and is still happening) with iPhones.

The owners of these devices realise that these notches aren’t really a problem at all, and pretty much never complain.

Meanwhile the people who do not own these devices or have never tried them out will keep complaining about the notch like it’s a major issue.

There’s already 3 apps out there which add a black bar to the top to completely hide the notch to create a seamless status bar bezel. If not that, just using a wallpaper with darker elements at the top is more than enough to make the notch barely noticeable. I’ve already forgotten that my 14 inch even has the notch, i’ve never had an issue with iphones and it’s even less noticeable when using the macbook.

How to make the notch disappear: Take it down a notch; work in "dork mode"
(completely black desktop background).

What notch?

ugh, sorry to hear that. But I'm assuming it's safe for the rest of us to do the update? I was scared off by your original post.

Until they invent a camera that can see through the screen, there either needs to be a notch or a forehead. Seems like the notch is a decent solution since it offers more useable space with minimal functional impact.

does anyone use (or can test) if M1(pro) supports custom resolutions on the internal monitor!? (apps like RDM, or similar HIDPI)

Had a look at one of these today, really liked the look of it, the all black keyboard looks and feels really nice.

However it is too big for me, if they decide to release a 12" version i couldn't resist buying one to replace my 12" Macbook.

I have a feeling that's what next year's M2 Air is basically going to be (although probably 13" with small bezels, perhaps).
