Apple's much-anticipated music service, Apple Music, launched this morning as part of iOS 8.4, bringing on-demand streaming music, the Beats 1 radio station, and Apple Connect, Apple's new social network aimed at letting artists connect with fans in new and unique ways.

We went hands-on with Apple Music in iOS 8.4 to give you a look at how the new service works, what it looks like, what it costs, and how to use it. Check out the video below to get a thorough overview of all three Apple Music components.

Apple Music's main streaming feature is a "For You" section within the Music app that offers up on-demand music recommendations based on preferences you've entered and music you've listed to previously. "For You" is able to offer more refined, tailored recommendations as you listen to more and more music.

Where did the "horizontal album cover view" go??? The 8.4 update basically destroyed the most convenient way to browse through your purchased albums on your iPhone.

I totally hate the new Apple "My Music" UI. It requires too many clicks for basic things. Can't enjoy my purchased music on my iPhone no more, need to go back to an iPod. :(

All they have to do is open the new music app and they're in!

My first impressions / issues.
  1. Siri works well if you ask for the exact match. When I say Play 'Artist' Siri gives me a message to Open music. When I open it the artist I've requested is not displayed.
  2. Can't find an EQ (on iPhone). I miss it from Spotify and find the music too tiny through in-ear earphones.
  3. I don't find the interface overwhelming (not yet anyway)
  4. I have family sharing turned on in iCloud but failed to set it up here. Maybe all need to be on 8.4.
  5. I would have liked to have seen an error message saying why it wasn't working rather than just 'not available'
Overall it's bye-bye Spotify for me - I would like to see the EQ and probably lyrics sooner rather than later though. Good first start -even if late.

Hold home button, tell Siri to play the playlist you have in mind. Done. Well "done" most of the time.

Love It !!!!!
There is so much there.. So many ways to discover and listen to music... Can be over whelming but in a great way !

Right on Apple... Success.

And i believe it will be a big money maker both for apple and artists!

Cheers Apple

The new UI is a step back. Clicking through artists > albums > then having to go through each album to find a song doesn't make sense. The old way of listing songs under the albums was so much easier- especially while driving. Why remove this and require more work and clicks? I don't understand the reasoning.

I instantly went back to Google Music for this exact reason. Such a piss off.

It’s unfortunate that you can't delete your matched songs from iTunes without losing your copies forever. If a song you own is matched and available on Apple Music, you have the option to delete the file from your library and stream it instead. However, once you turn off Apple Music, you can’t seem to get access to that song anymore either, because iTunes does not distinguish between songs that were originally from Apple Music and those that were matched. Would love to use iCloud Music Library to free up some space, but I will lose all my songs if I ever leave Apple Music. Isn’t this how it is supposed to work with iTunes Match?

In my mind this is a huge step "forward" to the old glory days. I hated, hated, having to scroll though hundreds of songs (when you have an artist with lots of albums) that came with iOS7 and above. Now it looks like if there's more than 2 albums in an artist, it shows you the album view. Thank you Apple!!

The main interface of Apple Music is white/very light gray with pink accents. But when you select artists, songs, albums, playlists etc. the UI colors change to adapt to the artwork. Yet the bottom section with the mini player and Music sections doesn't change it stays white and pink. In some cases this doesn't look bad, in others it looks awful (see below). I think the bottom section should adjust to match the color scheme of the top section. So if the top section is black and orange or green and gold the bottom section should be as well.

Also in some instances the back and search icons are really hard to read. Apple needs to adjust the artwork to make sure both of those are clearly visible. And perhaps the status bar needs to go too as it just clutters the interface.
