Hands-On With 3D Touch on the New iPhone 6s Plus

Is 3DTouch the same as Force Touch? If affirmative, why use two names? Yet another example of how clueless is Apple on these itoy days.

It's very nice, and there are little surprises within apps. For example in iMessage, a deep press on the camera icon brings up a way to jump quickly to take a photo or video, and immediately add it to the message. EDIT: this appears to be a 'Long Press' - no Taptic feedback. Sorry.

Also, the hardware Design is impressive. The display is very thin and, despite the surface glass flexing for the 3D Touch to work, there is absolutely no distortion of the LCD display beneath it. That must have taken some work.

Only Apple can make this work so well. You have to be in full control of hardware AND software to really make it seamless.

These are different level technologies.
Force Touch requires..um..force.
3D touch not.

I think the difference is that 3D Touch knows the position of the force on the screen. On the Watch, Force Touch is all or nothing and doesn't matter where on the screen you press - there is no context. Perhaps that's just a software difference, but I don't think so.

3D touching to get the app switcher to activate is definitely my least favorite of the force actions so far on the 6s Plus

I really struggle to get it to work... Wish you could swipe from the bottom to go to the home screen though, and swipe from the right to switch back to the app you just switched from!

When I said Force Touch, I was thinking in the latest MacBooks that have it. If 3DTouch is an "upgrade", it's quite disappointing to see top of the line MacBooks shipping with an obsolete technology just a couple of months after their release.

Doesn't seem to recognise force touch on the top and bottom 1.5cm of the screen. Anyone else noticed the same? I guess it makes sense as the display can't flex that close to it's supports.

I'm loving it even just for web browsing in Safari. Some links I just wanted to have a preview rather than going in, works perfectly with 3D touch. Especially when browsing items on online shopping sites, it's a perfect match for each other. Also cool for just previewing thumbnail pics in Safari.

Not seeing this problem on my 6S.

It's taken a little getting used to, but after just a few hours play I've got the knack. Quicker than I'm picking up typing on this marginally bigger keyboard (had a 5S before).

I think it needs some tweeking but has massive potential. It would be good if you could customise the quick links (I don't like Beats 1).

A video couldn't tell you the whole experience, you got to feel it with your hands. I'm totally in love with it.
Yeah, it feels good. The new Taptic motor they have is great, not just for 3D Touch, but for other notifications as well.

I upgraded from a 6 to a 6s+, the feel of it is great, it feels nice and sturdy. I picked up a 6s in the Apple Store today and it feels too light and flimsy now, and the screen looks so small. This is just after a day of using the +.

How about Safari comparison, 6/6+ vs 6S/6S+ video? Main reason I hate to use Safari on my 6+ is page reload, 2GB should fix that.

Tried it out in store. The problem right now is that a lot of the preinstalled first-party applications don't even support the basic home screen shortcuts, which basically means that I have to remember/try which apps have shortcuts and which don't. Something they should try to do is possible add some sort of visual hints as to where there are force touch actions available.

This! I was only able to play with it in store and while it's definitely better than long touch it just doesn't work everywhere. It's just as disappointing to 3D Touch and not get a response vs using 3D Touch and being presented options.
Even though I own a Android phone I still own a iPad Air 2. This feature would have been crazy good on tablets. Imagine 3D Touching on any app to bring up dual screen mode especially on the iPad pro. After playing with the surface 3 at Best Buy it's so easy to multitask on that tablet and it's a full blown operating system. Windows 10 really makes those machines useful. And it has a cheaper Stylus and Keyboard but that's for a different thread.

IDK how you would get different pressure measurements w/out hardware to detect it lol
From the size of the contact area (of course, it'd involve many variables, so a lot of guessing and as a result, less precision).

Genuinely think its awesome, well worth putting up with the size of the iPhone 6 design. It would be much easier to use in a 4" phone where I could force touch anywhere on the screen one handed with ease.

Someone really needs a way to explain pundits on how this is different from press and hold on a active link or data detectors actions. You can read how dismissive some of the comments online regarding 3D Touch.
I have exactly the same doubt. Like when you press and hold on a song on spotify to pre-listen to a song

I know you can adjust the sensitivity but the Fact you can long press an icon to enter wiggle/move icon mode is confusing... perhaps that needs to move to some where else.. I know it's bee n on there since iOS2 though!

Perhaps force press NOT on an icon in between or something...

To me this seems like a technology that will take a year to become useful.
Right now everything it offers is just shortcuts und a preview function, that's it.
But I expect Apple to integrate it deeper into the OS once the iPhone 7 launches and more iPhones have it. At that point, it will likely become a integral part of the navigation and really add a benefit.

Right now it's more of a very cool proof of concept to me.
The potential of this tech is really great, hope they will take advantage of it soon.

Kinda bummed that this is hardware based and not software based. I guess something new needed to be added to the 6S in order to get people to buy it. Maybe next year will bring something new an exciting as well.
Huh? How can something that is hardware based be done in software. Haven't you spent any time reading about how 3D is implemented? It's entirely hardware dependent. Folks, if you want credibility, get your facts straight and separate from bad guesses.

And perhaps it was created because it's a good idea instead of simply something to generate income. The cynicism here can be over the top.
