What case manufacturer is "confident" enough to start making cases in volume when they haven't even seen the REAL device yet?

That would be like making an aftermarket bumper for a car using only the spy photos of the car in testing.

Let's hope at least one case manufacturer waits to see if it even fits...

The risks of getting first to market or being available at launch day is worth the risks these companies take based on loose information. They win huge if they can get the case dialled in 99% accurately and have it fit "pretty dang close" to perfect with the major key elements lining up such as the headphone jack, where the dock connector will be, where the switches and volume nobs will be, etc.. If they missed the mark and their cases don't fit, they throw them away. The risk of $50,000 for the potential of $500,000+ if it all works out is worth it for these companies.

The risk of not having a case at launch time can be devastating to these companies.

To be honest, it's fine that Apple wants secrecy and all, but Apple needs these 3rd party manufactures, and these 3rd party manufactures have everything on the line. This is causing apple to create such high demand for the information about the phones that it will be impossible to keep everything secret. Anything that anybody knows outside of Apple Employees will be discovered eventually. The reason Apple Employees are safe is because they all have stock options and vested interest to keep it top secret. Cheap labor will always talk.

The iPhone 4 was always going to be hard to beat, and I don't think is the device to take the design crown from it.

I thought they made the silver band on the outside the antenna? Unless they've put actual antennas inside the phone and kept the silver band because they don't want to look like they made the wrong choice designing the 4/4S antenna.

The top and bottom parts of the band are probably antennas. That's two. I think LTE needs four. Then there's Wifi, bluetooth, and GPS.

What would I do? I'm no artist, but I'd start by matching the color of those bands to blend in and fade away with the rest of the back so they're not even noticeable.

Several of the leaked parts have shown just that, the metal on the black version of the phone being tinted dark black so that the metal and non-metal parts blend together:

I think that the 'mockup' shown in TheVerge's video looks a lot worse by comparison.

The two tone design is only acceptable if they get rid of those idiotic antenna bands.

Are they seriously keeping those?? Give me a break. There are countless other phones on the market that don't need out-of-place, off-color stripes on all sides of the device to function properly.

This phone is looking less and less attractive to me, and I've never owned a smartphone other than the iPhone.

Then keep your 4S. Or buy a really pretty flip phone. Or just shut up. It's a bloody phone, it's not a necessity.

The screen is taller, therefore it is bigger...

Only one axis. The other axis is still the same. Lame!

well why change an industry leading design? If it aint broke, don't fix it. They are modifying what is deemed to be the best there is. Geniuses? Yes they are. That is why they are so wealthy.

Geniuses at marketing? Yes. Geniuses at product design? Yes, but this iPhone design is getting a bit stale now.

Take your own advice. It's just a "bloody phone" chill...

I said it once I'll say it again . . .

Give me great software. Everything else is extremely trivial!
You guys have to remember these are just leaks. Apple will find a way to make anything look beautiful. I just want cool new software to go with it.

I still feel like something big is going to happen, we STILL haven't heard about a killer feature(s) yet. And we all know there is one.

The killer feature is the IPHONE!!!! It's redesigned with a bigger screen and new dock connector!! That's the new features this phone will have!! I think everyone is expecting more because us (techies) have already seen and heard these leaks but someone like the average non-techie joe, will be amazed by it because chances are they haven't seen these leaks.
Apple seems to be on a pretty obvious schedule!!

1 year new design then the following year same design with better features!!
iPhone (1st gen)
iPhone 3G-different design same innards + 3G
iPhone 3GS- same design way better innards, camera An WAY faster CPU etc...
iPhone 4-Radical new design but practically the same processor as 3GS And retina, better camera, facetime, were the big hardware features etc....
iPhone 4S- same design as 4 with Dual Core Processor, 8mp camera, iOS 5 was a pretty big upgrade, and Siri was also a huge software feature!!
"new iPhone"- new hardware design with small software updates!!

iOS 7....now that's where it's all gonna change all over again!!

All those stripes are necessary to split the metal into different antennas. All those other devices that you speak of, any of them made of metal?

We tried plastic. It sucked. I'd much rather have a metal phone with composite breaks, rather than a fully plastic phone.

It's no small feat stuffing over 12 different radios into a tiny package, and expecting all of them to work flawlessly all the time.

I thought the iPhone 4 was ugly when it came out

Honestly, I thought the iPhone 4 was ugly when I first saw it, but now think it looks great. Everyone also thought the name iPad was a horrible name when they announced it, but everyone throws it around like it ain't no thang now. The taller screen makes sense since pretty much every smart phone besides the iPhone is at that ratio. It also makes sense that the iPad mini will have the same 'taller' ratio and not have a thinner bezel on the sides like everyone keeps saying.

But yeah, no matter what the phone looks like, most people will put some rubberized or plastic case that doesn't look as nice as finished aluminum, so it doesn't really matter what it looks like.

You know why it's longer don't you...

To prevent another Antennae Gate scenario... to prevent signal attenuation...
That's the actual innovation of the new design :D

People if this "iPhones" were real Apple would have taken the videos and pics off the Internet already, no one has gotten a cease and desist letter. The manufacturers could easily invest on a prototype case because they would not loose that much, a cheap case could easily cost less than a dollar to make and they would sale it for $29.00. In case they make a mistake they would only loose $1.00 profit on a new case. So they got nothing to loose.

I'm sure that this are Apple leaks, and they would surprise the world with a different model.

This might be a dumb question, can some one explain me the difference and further more benefit of a wider rather than taller screen?

These are not stolen prototypes like the Gizmodo iPhone 4 was. They are prototypes made by leaked information.

I really do hope that Apple is purposely letting these leaks happen though.

Pretty sure that any signal issues were pretty well solved with the top-and-bottom antenna system that's in the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

I agree. Software will make or break a phone. Or any other device for that matter. Exterior design is still very important but is secondary to software.

Your point on not having heard of killer features yet reinforces my opinion that Apple may very well be doubling down on secrecy. I think they're leaking what they want. Leaking the design of the phone little by little creates interest and gets everybody talking about the next phone. I think these leaks are helping them more than hurting them.

Much like the announcement of Mountain Lion, which NO one was expecting and surprised even Gruber and Dalrymple, I think (hope) there will be features or services we never saw coming as a result of their secrecy.

I think they're being secretive on the the things that really matter. And an evolutionary design change of the iPhone isn't something that really matters and needs to be kept secret. There's not much a competitor is going to do with this information. The competition is certainly not going to start making smaller phones.

It looks nice except for the top part under the camera. The part where it goes from grey to black seems weird at the top part of the backside.

----------

It's the same phone but longer. These guys are geniuses...

No, it doesn't take a genius to know that the iPhone 4S design is good and that it could be refined. I think they're just regular designers.

Speaking of that, I tried shorting the antenna with my finger (the "Death Grip"), and it didn't seem to affect my calls or data at all. However, my iPhone normally causes my computer speakers to emit weird, annoying sounds if it is nearby and doing something on 2G (aka EDGE) or phone calls. I'm guessing that the wiring in the speakers picks up EM radiation from the phone at those frequencies. When I do the "Death Grip", the sounds cease completely.

i'd be happy if this were the final design. i use my phone mainly for calling, messages and email so i'd like to have a phone that is compact in size, the taller screen would improve my personal experience, i never liked how little of the messages is visible when the keyboard is up.
i wouldnt buy an S3, even though i like that screen very much, i wouldnt want to carry it in my pocket.

i'm just hoping for some visual updates on ios, functionwise it's all there.

I hadn't really noticed until I saw this photo, but it looks rather 'hipster'... Not a big fan, though the glossy press photos will no doubt change my mind.
