Why are there so many people here who think Apple came up with this? Has anyone used blackberry 10, webOS from like ten years ago, Google now from years ago, Nova, etc? For those that never leave the basement, try getting out a bit, and taking off the blinders. Apple is not really known for innovating, but more for copying a feature and streamlining it to their hardware.

Whoa there, slow down. You can't say fact like that on an Apple centric forum!

But anyway, remember that time when Steve Jobs claimed Apple invented multi-touch? That was a good one.

Swiping up on the button brings up a card-like interface with an app overview that includes a search bar, your recently used apps, and five predicted apps, while a longer swipe (or a second swipe) brings up the All Apps screen where you can access all of the apps installed on an Android device.

As on the iPhone X, you can use the swipe up gesture from anywhere in the Android operating system, regardless of which app is being used, while a tap goes to the Home screen. A left or right swipe, meanwhile, initiates a "Quick Scrub" gesture that lets you swap between your recently used apps.

The iPhone X's gesture system is intuitive and easy to use, so it's no surprise that Google opted to introduce a similar design, and it's the natural evolution for controlling a smartphone without traditional buttons.
...MR should have done their homework. These are not iPhone gestures. Please take a look at webOS.
Fact is, Android and iOS are the last of all OS to introduce proper gestures. That is the opposite of innovation.

WebOS had them. BlackBerry OS 10 has them. Sailfish has them.
In 2017 iOS joined the list and now Android.

Pathetic.
Making it look like Apple came up with it and it's now copied by google: disappointing... MR could have done better.

Sorry for the rant, but it's deserved.

  • That “shush” mode is just a brilliant solution.
  • Swipe-based system looks much more intuitive than what we have on iX. Especially that quick scrub.

Yea I know!
Apple comes out with the first flagship Notch design.. everyone talks smack about it, then they copy it!!

Apple needs to stop copying everyone!

Android now looking more polished and refined, Google is starting to learn from Apple take an existing concept and refine so mere morals can use it.

Both iOS and Android are good, Android is geared more towards hackers, were iOS is targeted to users that just like it to work and not be hassled with the ins and outs and not interested in customisation that much, just a phone that dose what they need.

Android is a great system to hack and customise and makes it great choice for third party manufacturers as they can customise it the way they like it to look on their phone.

Why Microsoft failed , they didn’t realy offer something different to iOS and Android

So Google copied something from Apple who copied from Blackberry? Check.

webOS had it before Blackberry even bought QNX. And Android hired webOS's key design guy, Matias Duarte, and had him do the Android 4.0 redesign that turned Android into a serious looking OS instead of a Windows XP-esque mess. I've been waiting for him to revisit the core parts of task-based multitasking for years now, there's been little hints like the merging of the Chrome tabs into the recent apps screen, but the return of the card based metaphor is even better than I expected. It still doesn't really seem task-based, though.

The quick scrub is very nice.

iOS needs to update their freaking volume hud and also steal this rotation button. In fact I wish there was a way to force videos to ALWAYS start in landscape by default even if rotation lock is enabled
A kind of smart rotation would be good. The only time I user landscape is when watching video.

Why Microsoft failed , they didn’t realy offer something different to iOS and Android

I believe they did actually offer something different. I really liked the UI. Microsoft like blackberry were late to react to the original iPhone, thus losing developers.

Long gone are the days of android being “ugly” or “too hard to use.” I would consider myself an Apple fanboy at my core, but Google has really got something with Androids material design/functions. I wish Apple would mix a little “skeuomorphism” into its uber pastel look. The subtle shades and sense of depth that stock Google apps have is beautiful. I have no problem with OEMs “stealing” ideas, makes everyone work harder :)

Find me a quote of someone saying Apple "invented" anything Goog released this I/O.

Heres the deal. People get tired of Android fanatics going to pro Apple websites to troll or whatever. Here's the reality:
Apple is thriving as a company
Apple, though controversial, sets standards.
Apple leads, Goog follows.
Goog has some nice little AI tricks (most I'm sure thanks to big data, collection of user data) but other than that they are lacking in unique features.
etc.

People need new narratives. We've all seen this **** before.
"Apple is doomed", but makes record sales.
"Apple can't innovate", but Goog and others race to imitate.
"Apple is alienating its fanbase", but Android OEM's follow the alienating trends?
etc

Its just comical that Android users (and the media) bash Apple but its ok for Android OEM's to follow the Apple path. A lot of us here realize that.

I thought the robotic one was Siri. Android feels smoother than ios and a boat load more intuitive for user experience.

Subjectively as an Android dev and aspiring iOS dev, that is not true. Although it is subjective and not really anything to do with this thread.

That as well as no dedicated area for a back button. It's up to developers on where or if they even want to include a back button in each app. Google's keynote was beyond impressive this year, and many have said they are more interesting than apples own keynotes.

Swiping to the left is implemented throughout the software. No button needed.
Theres a really great photos app. Has some nice Siri features too. By the way Siri has some nice tricks outside of voice. I got an email from work for a lunch and Siri suggested me setting it up on my calendar. This has been there for like 2 years.
Also, since your post is referencing a files app, we got one. With pretty nice gestures (though the app itself needs work). Also syncs up with Dropbox and GDrive, etc. Third party wise its far ahead of Android (at least up until Android N I believe, Goog stopped supporting my device {yay!!} )

webOS and Windows Phone's greatest issues were both beyond their control:

1) The app craze was at its peak. Mobile web was still pretty crap so mobile apps were a must for most tasks on mobile. iOS and Android had an insurmountable lead in this department.

2) With all new tech products, there's a fear factor. People get accustomed to the brand they bought and are afraid or unwilling to put in the effort to learn something new. That made it really hard to steal customers from Apple. It's still the case today but was probably more the case back then. And to some degree that was reasonable since iOS at the time was miles ahead of its largest competitor, Android, creating the impression that all non-Apple smartphones were far inferior.

webOS also had the major issue of ******, unreliable, unattractive hardware in the early 2010s... This is the HP Pre 3, released in August 2011: http://www.extragsm.com/images/phone/big/HP/Pre 3/HP-Pre-3-01.jpg

Its non-Blackberry contemporaries were the iPhone 4s: https://www.imore.com/sites/imore.c...5/08/history-iphone-4s-hero.jpg?itok=TJJOQT9K

and the Samsung Galaxy S ii: https://drop.ndtv.com/TECH/product_database/images/5292013114646PM_635_samsung_galaxy_s_II.png

The fat, little Pre had no chance.

Nice additions. However the interface was jittery and stuttered. Although iOS does not seem as feature rich, the smoothness especially on a X is unparalleled. Maybe this was a lower end Android?

Or it’s developer preview one....

Android P is impressive.
Google Duplex is super impressive.
From what I've been reading, Android is now a lot smoother than it used to be... not as clunky.
Google is making technology exciting again. :)
They've brought back the WOW factor.

I'm gonna get the Pixel 3 as soon as it gets out and ditch the Note 8. I am not a fan of the curved screens like on the note nor the slow Samsung updates. I was planning to get the next iphone, but seeing Android P, it makes iOS look old school.

There are several people saying it's copied from apple, which is far from true.

If anything Google has been leading for many years, while Apple trails behind trying to play catch up. I am unsure why the distortion field is so strong that you believe it is the other way around. I am guessing you don't keep up with anything Google/Android or haven't seen the Google I/O that just took place. Even watching keynotes over the years clearly show Google is the tech leader, and Apple is at the end of the line.

Google Photos >>>>> Apple photos by a LANDSLIDE
File system on Android >>>>> barely even a file system on Apple

"Third party wise its far ahead of Android"....wait what? Are you joking? Android has the biggest lead in this aspect. Who cares about only integrating with Dropbox and Google drive, when you can share anything from any app to not only those two apps, but literally ANY app. There are only a handful of apps that can have integration with other apps in iOS. Not to mention no real file manager. No ability to plug in peripherals that just work in Android, like a hard drive, thumb drive, controller, mouse/keyboard, etc.

I like how at first a lot of haters (especially android fans) of the iOS UI gestures are now OK with it and magically learned to like it.

Too bad will be a long time for most android users to get to enjoy the new UI except Pixel 2 owners that X owners have enjoyed for the past 6 months.
Been using swipe up gesture for at least 5 years now. On Android. Not sure where you have been all this time, but welcome to the party! It's not too late for Apple to finally get gestures!
